    Gotta LOVE The Kolb Firefly - Wonderful Little Airplane !

    • @19sloper
      @19sloper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure. Homer Kolb is now relatively unknown, but he was a real pioneer. Probably should be credited with inventing the first stick-and-rudder airplane style true Ultralight. It pre-dated the hang glider derived Ultralights.

      Probably is. I got it from him in 2019. Were you the first owner? How much time did you put on it?

      @@19sloper i was the first owner and sold it to him in 2019.it should have a little piece of clear tape on the inside of the covering by the fuel tank. I put 300 hours on the first engine and about 150 on the second. I live in indiana.

    do you have the rubber sound dampers on top of the head under the cowl. They're 100 bucks for the set, I wonder if it's worth it.

    • @19sloper
      @19sloper  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean between the head and the cooling shroud? Hmmm never heard of them. The only rubbers I know of are the seals that go around the spark plug boots so the air doesn't leak out.

    Accidently deleted your email....at least I think it was..... sorry! Nice video about the engine!! ....You remember that movie Thunderbolt and Lightfoot....can't remember if that was the name. Anyway they made that shortly after I left. Was my stompin' grounds!!! Had a 352 Ford Fairlane! Don't think I kept it under 95!!--😂😂😂!

      Try again, Its still there. Yes, that movie was filmed in Great Falls, Wolf Creek Canyon, and the church at the beginning was in Judith Gap. Good movie. There have been some others filmed here. In some movie with Charles Bronson, they blew up Paris Gibson High School for that. (It was scheduled for demolition, and man, they demolished it!) Leonard Nimoy directed a movie that was filmed almost entirely in Belt. For a week or so, we were a Canadian Border Crossing.....🙄

    how do you keep the pullstart cord from fraying on that ring in the frame? did it come with some kind of grommet? mine keeps chewing up the cord.

    • @19sloper
      @19sloper  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never had that problem. When I pull it to start, it comes straight through the ring and doesn't rub. The ring is not meant to act as a pulley. There is a rubber cone on the handle that sits in the ring when flying. Does yours have the pulley between the engine and the ring?

    • @FourthWayRanch
      @FourthWayRanch ปีที่แล้ว

      @@19sloper yes i put in a pulley, you must be taller than me cause it rubs on the ring when i pull on it, I fixed it up with JB weld steel stik. I got it dialed in now, starts first pull every time so not gonna get a lot of cord wear. working on straightening out the landing gear, the factory has a new setup where the axle is separate from the bracket, mine is one piece, we tried heating and bending it. I got a new set of aileron pushrods but the bearing only goes on 3/8" which is minimum allowed, i might have to get another longer set. hopefully get a chance to try and fly it soon.

    I wonder why I have a lot of fuel pooling in the impulse line? Maybe from priming too much, I get a lot of smoke starting. Your pump is below the engine and I don't see fuel in the impulse line

    • @19sloper
      @19sloper  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure. Is yours above, or below? Should not be fuel in there unless the crankcase is badly flooded, or the pump is spitting back, right?

    • @FourthWayRanch
      @FourthWayRanch 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@19sloper I have it below the crancase Port but I think it was from previous flooding, I drained it out and it doesn't seem to make any more, so that's probably what it was

      Doing that on pavement? I didn't like that either. PLEASE be careful doing taxi runs! Oldest story in the books is "It got off the ground before I knew it...." .... and one of two or three bad scenarios followed. DO NOT Crow Hop it. Don't get it in the air until you are ready to fly.@@FourthWayRanch

    how much play is there in the gearbox when you move the prop back and forth? does it click a little bit? can you hear it rattle a bit when it's idling?

    • @19sloper
      @19sloper  ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume it is a B box you are asking about. Not much. A little movement at the prop tip due to backlash in the gears. No clicking. I have never adjusted the dampening washers in the gearbox. It may chatter at idle some, especially below 1800 or so. and if it is bad enough it will get hard to start. I've never had any trouble with one. I put 850 hours on my first one. My 503 has a C box, so has the rubber dampeners.

    • @FourthWayRanch
      @FourthWayRanch ปีที่แล้ว

      @@19sloper I had my idle too low that's why it was making that noise. I gotta get new choke plungers, they cause a lot of problems when they get old and leaky.

  • @FourthWayRanch
    @FourthWayRanch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks, can see exactly how to make the exhaust mount bracket. That muffler must be something kolb has made up, the one's u buy don't have the brackets welded on them. I have a rebuilt rotax skidoo engine I'm getting the machinist to fix so it'll accept the B box
    they carve a big arc out of those motor mount plates as seen in the plans, I just left mine straight. it looks like two washers on top of the lord mount is enough to clear the center tube.
    can you pull on the starter when you're in the air?

    • @19sloper
      @19sloper  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FourthWayRanch No. I wonder if that was something Kolb Co. had made, or maybe they found a supplier that sells to other UL Pusher manufacturers. I don't think I've seen it at LEAF or Spruce or Lockwood, but I have not looked. I'm, kind of in the same spot.... I want to find gear legs for the FireFly. I suppose you could try calling Brian Melbourne, see if you get a response. I have his number here if you need it.

      I have not weighed it, but Rotax publishes all the weights for the basic engine, gearbox, exhaust, carbs, etc so you can figure it out for what equipment you have. In addition to that stuff, I have a prop extension and propeller of course. You can Google it and find the specs here: www.rotax-owner.com/en/support-topmenu/technical-information/rotax-engine-specifications/2-447-specifications
