I think the hate on De ligt is comical, the guy has 8 seasons under his belt, with league titles won, deep runs into the CL, and lots of minutes under his belt. He is so experienced for a young defender, and probably will still maintain his physical qualities for the next 5+ years at minumum. Alll this plus he's actually a really good footballer, and a really good defender. He is physical, aggressive, wins the lionshare of 1v1 duels and he is good on the ball with the pass and progressive carries?! Oh and he's good in the air and scores goals? What else do you want from a signing?! He is a really good signing for us at a decent price, well done to the backroom staff for getting this deal done.

LOL Deluded and warped and clearly someone who has never watched or followed either player in any depth. Mazraoui is so so injury prone and simply can not defend. He is decent in patches on the ball but is another Emerson Royal but with injury issues.
De Ligt is horrible he is no better than he was at 17 and has his own injury issues. He failed at Juve and was sold at a loss and then moved to Bayern and failed again and sold again at a loss. He cant get into a mediocre Holland team and is immobile and not as good on the ball as some believe.

Manchester City bought a premier league fallen, injury proned player named Kevin de bruyne, and now he become one of the most success player in the football history. He came from Ajax, he played at Juventus and learned from Chiellini and Bonucci, moved to Bayern and learned the German way of passing from the back (very Dutch).
Honestly, whenever I hear these guys on ESPN or Sky Sports it just annoys me...they clearly just watch one league OR they (ESPN) have such of an anti-United agenda that it makes me wanna check the 2007-2013 archives to see what the heck they said about Ferguson and United when we won everything for jokes

De ligt isn't mobile enough. He's an old fashioned defender similar to the mold of Harry Maguire. So he may struggle with the pace of the premiere league. Most of the top teams have defenders who can move around a lot for example Stones, Dias, Rudiger, Van Dijk, Gabriel, Saliba. Like I understand why we signed Yoro as he fits perfectly within that category. But De ligt I fear will get found out easily, that style of play just isn't needed at the top level. It's just as-well Bayern are trying to get rid of him & replacing him for Tah who is more modern.

one of the reasons I think Ten Hag is working with so many players he has worked with before, is partly to ensure the locker room stays on his side, last season when everyone was calling for his head, I don't remember reports that the locker room had turned and now with De Ligt he has his former captain in there, Martinez is already a leader and we see it, Onana looks like he doesn't stand for the criticism and for the younger guys like Yoro and Mainoo and Amad they'll know right away the standard he expects not only from him and his staff but from his former players who have won things and done things his way

The bottom line is that no one knows for certain how successful a player will be until he shows you on the pitch/field. For example, in the 1998 NFL draft Ryan Leaf was selected as the overall #2 pick in the 1st round. He was pretty much a bust and only lasted 4 years in the league. Conversely, Tom Brady wasn’t selected until the 6th round (199th pick) and went on to become, arguably the greatest player of all time at his position.

Yoro transfer meaning: We want to compete for the title in 3-5 years.
De light transfer meaning: We want to compete for the title today.
Glazers would've bought Braithwaite for like 100mls. I couldn't be happier for this transfer. I am absolutely surprised how well this summer went.
The only place I have my doubts over is the left back. I think either Malacia or Shaw should've been gone this summer, and we should've bought someone fit.
Now I am aware that there isn't anyone on the market appealing enough other than Udogie which we would not get for cheap.
I think Erik ten Hag's solution for left back is to play Noussair Mazraoui and Martinez, which both of them do not primarily play left back?
As a last thing. I do not expect Marcus Rashford to play well without Luke Shaw (which we know will be absent).

Mazraoui isn't good at LB it would be Dalot that switched there. I think we will see Martinez starting there though (with no intention of him overlapping) and us playing an inverted RB (either Dalot or Mazraoui) on the other side, kinda like City do when they play Rico Lewis at RB in a transition from 433 to 3223
Like against Fulham I'd expect to see
      Onana
      Dalot/(Mazraoui probably a sub)
      Lindelof/(De Ligt probably a sub)
      Maguire
      Martinez
      Mainoo

Martinez actually replaced De Ligt at Ajax so they haven't actually played together yet but they're both familiar with what ten Hag wants and with Mazraoui and Onana there as well, that's 4 of your back 5 who are all familiar with EtH's desires when it comes to playing out from the back and have the skills to implement it too. Mazraoui can play on both sides to it's really Shaw and Dalot competing for that other defensive spot on the right or left.

de Ligt, great signing, someone who knows what ten Hag is about and can communicate that to the team. 25 years old not reached his peak, defenders reach their peak later than attacking players quite often, and also maintain it longer, especially if their style of defending is about game reading, anticipation and well timed tackles, rather than physical, which I think is de Ligt’s style from the games I have seen. So a possible long time servant of the club.

De Ligt and Mazroui raise the league floor on this squad from what we know it to be (8th) to probably 5th. We aren't playing the chuckle brothers at CB and we aren't going to be chopping and changing our right back into a makeshift LB because the backup RB we have isn't capable of playing anywhere else.
They raise the floor. And that's probably as important, if not moreso, than raising your ceiling.

Here's my 2 cents on De Ligt:
He's perhaps the best CB in terms of reputation we've ever bought along with Varane in 21, and Rio back in 02. On paper this is almost a perfect fit for Ten Hag's system. He came through the Ajax academy in the same time as Mazraoui & Onana. So he should have no problem settling in alongside them. He has a CB partner in Martinez who understands his role in a Ten Hag system perfectly. He brings all the essentials you need, as well as the leadership and experience of top level football at the very highest level. All at the age of just 25.
The downside, this HAS to work. We've been starved of a top level CB who can stay fit. All others have been either not good or not fit enough, and some cases both. Martinez has proven a gem with all the right attributes we needed. This pairing, De Ligt & Martinez, has to be the lynchpin that builds a consistently top level performing Utd side. It will make or break Ten Hag. We can't afford inconsistency anymore, we can't afford bad luck with injuries. Because I don't know where we go if De Ligt doesn't work. Granted Yoro should be the main guy who can step in for De Ligt, but he's still young, and doesn't have the expectation of needing to perform immediately.

I think De Ligt is a gamble that may or may not pay off. His quality isn’t in question. It’s that for some reason this squad and in general this league is pretty bad for injuries, maybe it’s more physically demanding or it’s the frequency of games with no break but a player who picks up niggles may miss more games than perhaps in other leagues.
If 2 of Yoro, De Ligt, and Martinez are injured at the same time it will cause issues with the system again and cost points.
One more defender able to play a high progressive line and I think it’s not a problem but Maguire, Evans, or Lindelof coming into the starting line up is problematic.
I’d be much happier if Maguire and Lindelof were sold and a left sided CB who fits the system came in.
