  • EFIS Issues and Radio Intercom Noise Issues - Revisited and FIXED!
    This production contains flying related entertainment;
    Upon review it now turns out that I had minimal success with everything I did, however I did improve the radio transmission and receiving clarity.
    First the EFIS.
    Reviewing the data recorded by the new EFIS with firmware 2.03, I can still see two issues. When reviewing the data on my computer and using the MGL supplied Enigma Blackbox software, I noticed the following;
    1.The flight date is still one day later the the actual date.
    2.The flights are not date sorted.
    An inconclusive issue as yet is the loss of earlier flights and only ending up with the last one. Maybe it depends on the time of day I fly and the date being recorded.
    None of these issues seem to be UTC date related - as far as I can tell.
    As for the modification.
    I installed a relay to supply +12v directly from the battery to the intercom. This relay operates when the key is turned on. I did this because working on the theory that there was too much load on the system. Too many devices obtaining +12v from the key-switch, there was too much load on the system. With strobes, landing light, EFIS, RDAC, intercom and radio all turned on, I estimate up to 12amps through the keyswitch, wiring and many connections which has to be a voltage drop nightmare.
    Sure enough - some noise went away - the modification got rid of 95% of the strobe noise. But now battery generator charging noises are very prominent.
    My next fix will be to install one of these.. a toroid choke. It goes in series with the supply to the intercom and is meant to filter-block high frequency electrical noise, and will often work better in conjunction with a capacitor connected to ground.
    As you can see - making these videos is rather challenging and frustrating at times. The more technology used seems to exponentially increase the fail rate. On this flight I got very little audio because my recording app was stopping after 3 minutes, and the second app I tried in flight didn't record the external input, only the internal microphone audio - that is - wind and engine noises!
    The Insta360 ran for 5 minutes - for some reason the batteries didn't charge properly the night before, and the aircraft power supply didn't work correctly.
    Fortunately we got helmet, bar and strut camera video! The helmet cam, a Sony FDX3000, is something I have seen in other videos online, and the first time I am trying it out.
    The GoPro Hero7 strut camera also records the gps/gauge data you will see onscreen from time to time.
    And the DJI Osmo Action on the bar, used to film me talking, as well as to film in what ever direction is relevant, powered on perfectly for a commendable and reliable one and a half hours.
    I often fly and do fun things to make these videos for you.

    Great vid Crayonbox. I love the way you don’t edit out the camera problems etc. makes me feel better about my technical challenges ( usually greater than yours, and hardly ever fixed ;-)).
    I have been struggling with a feed back problem in my intercom recently, tried all sorts of setting changes in the radio and nothing worked, then I bought a little pressure pack of compressed air, blew out the headset jack sockets and bingo 👍

      Thanks Skeptic. Do you know why the compressed air fixed the feedback? Just poor connection I guess? Do you live near salt water?

      CRAYONBOX FLYING ADVENTURES no, I’m inland a little, do a bit of coastal flying, but the jacks are mounted on a 45 degree angle and probably collect a bit of dust and debris I think

    Nice video editing! You spent some time and energy on that. Thanks for the tips on the ground loop intercom interference.
