  • Does Adolf Hitler like Duke Ellington? No, and nor do many National Socialists. But the story of the music in the Third Reich is more complicated than you might think. What if we told you that Joseph Goebbels has tried to create a Nazi-approved swing band tasked with bringing the Jazz War to the Allies?

    Music is quite a universal language, and so it can be hard to appropriate it for propaganda purposes when it goes against what you seek to promote. Though that certainly hasn't prevent many, including the Nazis, from trying.

      On a related note, have you heard of/heard Trio Lescano, Mussolini's 'favorite' female swing singers? They were Dutch/Hungarian but became quite popular in Italy during the war years. Their sound is similar to the Andrews Sisters.

    There is a funny story in regards to jazz in Nazi Germany. During the war there was a Luftwaffe fighter pilot, Hans-Joachim Marseille. This man was not your typical example of a Nazi officer. For he enjoyed jazz, swinging music, a big time womanizer, enjoyed going out, performed crazy stunts and much more. During his time in North Africa, he befriended a black South African POW called Mathew 'Mathias' Letulu and helped down Allied fighter pilots. In 1942, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and was invited to eat with Nazi high officials such as Goering, Goebbels, Hitler, etc. Hans then played on a piano and played famous German classical artist then towards the end started playing jazz and American swinging music. This cause Hitler to get up and leave the room. In another instance, Hitler asked Hans if he would join the Nazi party and Hans reply was "That if he saw a party worth joining, he would consider it, but there would have to be plenty of attractive women in it." Hans-Joachim Marseille resisted Nazi ideals and would enjoy jazz music. May Hans-Joachim Marseille rest in peace in the sandy lands of Egypt. Godspeed.

      @gorofujita5767 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many of the "contradictions" also stem from not-so-historical cartoony half-truths being popularized as what Germany at the time was. Hence, when people get acquainted with other POVs that somehow denote more moderation on the part of the nazis, they see a contradiction between that and the cartoony version they had heard about before.

    Quite interesting, I love these specials on different aspects of WW2. I remember a story told by a Hungarian veteran, who picked up a German broadcast while serving on the Eastern Front. It was called "Atlantiksender". He later realized that this broadcast was actually providing the true picture, and after the war, he even met the guy who spoke perfect German, but was in fact British: Sefton Delmer. It's another interesting tidbit, part of the British counterpropaganda efforts.

      William Joyce alias Lord Haw Haw, broadcaster of German propaganda in English during WWII, mimicked the English upper class accent of his time. Joyce's family and personal loyalties included connections to the United States, Great Britain, and Germany. However, he was born in County Galway, Ireland, and normally spoke English in the accent of that county. After the fall of Berlin to the Russians, and after a few drinks, Joyce made his final broadcast on German radio speaking in his own accent.

    Where did Corny Östermann’s band fall in this odd situation? I’ve been listening to a lot of their 1939 music, and it’s so familiar to traditional swing yet with a german touch. I’m aware (or have seen at least) most of its members were conscripted into the Wehrmacht (such as Rudi S.) sent to the Eastern Front by 1943, and of course didn’t return home… as a swing/jazz fan, this video was very interesting, and can’t wait to hear more from Astrid!

    Hi ww2. Hope you guys are well. I was reading a story about an African American soldier who helped to liberate Jews from the death camps in Germany. During his encounter with them, he told them "one day you will be free. For I too am a member of a persecuted people." It must have been really heartwarming to know that even during all that they went to, people who they probably had never seen before were able to have empathy for them given their shared history of oppression.

      @@WorldWarTwo Hi ww2- the soldier's name was Paul Parks, and he took part in the liberation of Dachau in April 1945. There's been a historical debate since then over whether he, or any other black troops took part in the liberation of Dachau. But a Polish Jewish survivor confirmed several decades back that he was there. That was the one who reported that he had said that "you will be free. For I too am a member of a persecuted people." Personally I don't see why he would make that up; it's most likely that African Americans took part in the liberation of Dachau. So it's likely that he was there. That's the story as I understand it.

    Lord Haw Haw (William Joyce) was born to Irish parents in New York . Moved to Ireland, then to England, involving himself with Mosley's fascists. Executed for treason in Wandsworth Prison. Some people say he was never British, so should not have been executed for treason. So the voice was undoubtedly a sneering upper-class English accent.

    18:20 I first read about this in the condensed books section of an old readers digest issue (1970's). The books was titled (if I recall correctly) Britain's Black Boomerang. They even had a station for damaging U-boat crews morale with supposed requests of music from a Uboat about to depart, unerving the crew. Their technique was not to lambast the Germans but to pretend to be them ("cover") with some misinformation ("dirt"). They even transmitted the Nuremberg Speeches as if they were a legit station.

    Wow I. A very entertaining show but I have to add a really well researched story. Lots of subtle details about Goebbels' efforts and all the musicians involved. NORM MCDONALD OF CANADA, btw, was the comedian that Indy referenced re: the idea you cannot hate someone and do a good imitation of them ( i.e. Americans). Look forward to more similar videos ❤🎉!

    The video is really well made- often foreign people (and Germans too) get that topic totally wrong.
    It was infact still possible to get all the latest jazz tunes and also many many black musicans on records until the start of the war.
    Still, there weren‘t just as many people which really were interested in this modern foreign music expact some well-to-do teenagers. „Hot Jazz“ was not less or more popular in Germany than in britain or the USA.
    Just last week I found five records of the Charlie band, which Are incredible rar in Germany too and I‘m happy to have found out that these are still known today in other nations too

    The Germans devised a fighter aircraft that fired 20 millimeter cannon shots straight up since the bellies of many bombers were the most vulnerable part of the enemy aircraft. The Germans called this aircraft's unique armory "jazz music", whatever German for that is. Starts with an "S". Schraege musik. I looked it up. Imagine your Lancaster being blasted to bits by schraege musik. The Schnattzzi imagination is either: non-existent (used up in uniform design) or totally surreal.
