Literally after that dance, you can see them smiling more at each other in the backgrounds as they travel. And their interactions become much less 'strained' Honestly, that look Fern gives Stark is the spark of her real romantic interest in him. Its a beautifully done scene, and frankly done here better than most actual romance anime. Literally can see the moment when it happens.
For more specifics, you can notice that they tend to more often walk or sit next to each other over time (though a lot of this is from later manga material).
Not obvious enough to outright tell, but not too subtle to not be noticed either. They didn’t have that sparkly-lovey dovey vibe you would expect in anime romance, but that’s what makes it unique. The more I come back to rewatch it, the more I find out the hidden details and my respect for the frieren fandom just keep going higher. Thank you guys for being so insightful.
"It wasn't just that Stark held Fern's shoulder down. She remarked that his grip was strong, and that it hurt her because he wasn't controlling his strength. It's easy to marvel at someone's physical prowess, but only when it's used against you does it suddenly become terrifying." I made that comment on that video referencing the scene where Stark holds down Fern's shoulder. It was a wonderfully done scene that a lot of men can relate to, because we aren't always aware of losing control in the moment. I've been told countless times by my female family and friends that I'm too strong, that it's scary when I let my focus slip for even a second. Sometimes it really does feel like I'm living in a world of cardboard and I can't blame them for feeling that way towards me. It's a constant struggle that I have never seen depicted in media before, let alone depicted in a way that feels so real.
The reveal of what was bothering Fern hits you like a truck. Because Stark is such a kind little bean with selfworth issues that even we as viewers can easily forget that this is a mighty warrior that one shots Dragons, Demons and Monsters of any kind easily if he is determined to do so
This hit me like a truck when I hit my growth spurt in highschool and while play fighting with my girlfriend (not a euphemism I promise) and I saw her get genuinely scared of me for a moment.
Every boy or young man has a moment where he realises just how strong he can unintentionally be when he's careless. Even pretty weak men are substantially stronger than the average woman, it's just the way it is, and unfortunately it usually takes someone being hurt for a man to truly understand the disparity. Stark holding down Fern's shoulder was his version of this, and I don't think he will make that mistake again.
Excellent insight 🥂 - this is THE aspect of Superman that seems lost on the writers of Film Superman. The nature of restraint and the submission to gentleness. example: Superman comes swooping in and rescues Lois … when they’re safe he apologizes for ruining her jacket. She looks and we see that the speed of his hand was a bit off- his hand print is a scorch mark across her back. Subtlety is how The Fantastic becomes grounded in our pedestrian point of view. - the breakfast table in ‘79 Alien. - the widget in Luke’s hand, unlocking the message from Leia. - the Monster frightened by Frankenstein’s Torch!
Oh for sure. I would be flirty play-fighting my now wife and when holding her forearms, she would make me stop because I was accidentally *bending her radius and ulna together*.
This is a good source for storytelling advice. Brandon Sanderson is putting his writing lectures online... again. And Larry Correia/Steve Diamond have the WriterDojo, which is also very good. I recommend adding them to your storytelling advice sources.
"Natural" I think is the key word here. Romance in anime/manga can be so stereotypical that it kind of hurts, especially in this genre which is so full of wish-fulfilment you get romantic partner(s) as a kind of extra reward, like loot. Seeing Stark and Fern come together in moments placed here or there across the story is also seeing them grow and mature as people. Which is quite heart-warming when you have such likeable and well-drawn characters, you want them to achieve what Himmel and Frieren sadly never could.
The way characters adjust their clothing is just incredible if you know anything about animation. Just look at how Fern pulls on her robe before sitting down! The little details man!
@sooyster4033 I mentioned the coat a few times. That may have been me! It's an other great example of extremely hard to animate sequence. The animators are flexing when doing this.
This is two things missing from most modern movies and shows: It's subtlety and trust that the audience isn't stupid. EDIT: A third part of this is the fact that Fern and Stark have a misunderstanding... but their friends help them figure out what's wrong and they talk it out. It's not played for "Dramorz" (the tendency for shows and movies to do THE most dramatic thing possible regardless of whether it makes sense), it's played as a misunderstanding among friends that is worked through by communication and trust.
It's not exactly that, it's having so many subtle details that a viewer is likely to catch at least one, and still using strongly defined characteristics and tropes so dense fucks like me can understand. Even if you don't notice or understand the expressions, you might understand the touch. Even if you dont understand the parts unspoken, there were boundaries set early on that the person setting broke willingly that show them getting closer. And even if you don't remember or understand any of that, it's paced slowly so no individual increment feels like a shock, and you can understand it with "they're growing closer with the time they've spent together" even if you never noticed any of the subtleties. The key of being an amazing writer, in my opinion, is maintaining that overarching arc and message for a popcorn viewer while including the subtleties that engaged fans can fawn over and watch over and over. I think the key problem with a lot of current stuff is either being unable to convey the key beats of their overarching story in a simple way, or not understanding their characters/world enough to create the subtleties that fans love to dig into. They worry so much about how complex their story should be that they forget to lay the groundwork for the simple understanding in the first place.
@@hariman7727 The thing is that's not "wrong". Most people are not putting their full attention into the story, or are too tired or burnt out to give their full attention. The issue is putting in shitty exposition to explain your plot, or worse, explain your message. You *can* do it, but you'll have to pull off good character and dialogue work for even the average individual to overlook they're being talked down to. The issue is not really the assumption that the audience can't understand, whether because they're dense or they're inattentive, the issue is taking the lowest effort path to fix that issue at the cost of the immersion of the story.
Like, sometimes a story will be heavy handed with its message, but if they take the time to build why the character is being so direct, like have the character try to do it more subtly and be ignored, and using the dialogue and framing to build up to that explosion of anger it'll still be received well
@zillanimu Veilguard and Netflix asking studios to put in exposition for people who are only listening to movies and shows is where your approach ends. If you write to the lowest common denominator, you get the lowest common denominator.
One of my favorite elements of romance in anime are what I call the B-romance plots that happen with side characters the slowly build in the background to the point you can easily overlook it. Frieren took that idea and used it with the shows main characters and perfectly executed in a way no other show has ever come close.
The cabin scene is also very good at showing everyone else's character too- Frieren is a naturally 'wait and see' kind of person, Sein is more the kind to confront the issue head on, aware that letting it fester will not do well for everyone. It is also the first time we see Sein as an actual priest- mediating people is part of his job, and he does it perfectly here.
been waiting for a frieren video. btw guys, am i cooked? I love frieren so much that since the release of the anime, i've been constantly watching frieren content every single day lmao.
Similar here. Frieren works for me in almost exactly the same way as The Lord of the Rings (the book, not the unfortunately clumsy film adaptations) did when I read it in the 1970s. Funnily enough, just like when I first encountered Tolkien's LotR, it took me several attempts to get into the story, probably because both develop so slowly. And today I love both, probably because both developed so slowly. By the way, as far as the ‘small’ moments are concerned: there is also one between Frieren and Fern that touched me. After Fern's repeated doubts and sulks about Frieren's dawdling on their journey together throughout the story, she makes the decision without any hesitation that it's more important to find Himmel's Ring that was lost in the crash landing, no matter how long it takes.

Fern is definitely my favorite character. She's so amazing but her (and our as a viewer) world view is warped by having such a strong mage as her teacher. I think her first time defeating a demon or the moments in the 1st class mage test are clear moments where she shines. Let's be honest, her battle against the mimic frieren was so fk satisfying.
I will say, Stark has to be the top 2 best character in all of Frieren, an amzing submerssion of the hero trope that also adds so much interaction and spice to the team. Despite Fern and Frieren being considerably different in mindset, they don't diverge much from the other in decision of deduction. Stark is a whole other world, his views on the world are totally different from Frieren's, or Ferns, that shines in little things like the chapter about his birthday, or his way to handle arguments and fights.
There seems to be no end to the ways in which this show is an outstanding work of art. Everything about it is just so good and so well made. I cannot wait for season 2.
I love how their romance develops so naturally. I've been annoyed by Stark's over-the-top-ness expressions, but the romance between these two is compelling.
Stark + Fern is good. However, I like glasses boy + armpit girl more. I don't recall their names but the ones with clone magic and cutting magic. Total opposites but I can see their chemistry especially in the recent manga chapters.

Anime has a unique method of adapting stories to feel more like a Novel- more than any other medium. From the layering of backstory; the altered character models to portray emotional variations; the insertion of diagrams and graphs to explain things- in World. *Happy to listen 🎧 🥂
In typical Frieren fashion, somehow the romance is definitely hidden but also completely undeniable and clearly progressing in a way that romances do not in other anime where the romance is not hidden
YAY! You pronounced 'Sein' correctly! I liked this video essay because it was short, to the point, and sweet, ... unlike 'Beyond Journey's End,' ... I mean the short-part, as Stark's and Fern's developing feelings for each other is very sweet to watch. I like how you used this specific romance to critique romance-tropes in anime in general and how THIS romance gets both the awkwardness and the tentativeness right, making a realistic romance that we can cheer for and be proud of them for doing their best, given who they are and their respective upbringings. *sigh* THEY SHOULD JUST DATE ALREADY! ... and I miss Sein in this heroes' party.
my problem with romance in anime in general is that it never goes anywhere until the very last episode. very few anime do we see the main couple in a relationship relatively early where we can get to see their interactions as a couple
Another great "pey talks anime" discussion about Frieren. But the (Stark x Fern) romance has been visible ever since Stark killed the Dragon and Fern becomes his fangirl. Calling him "small" and a pervert says more about her feelings for him than it does about Stark himself. Stark was raised by a celibate Dwarf and then by a celibate Elf girl. Fern was raised by a celibate priest, and then by the same celibate Elf girl. They both have less than zero experience with romance. Sure they are going to struggle with each other and themselves. Romance hides from them which then hides from us.x
*MANGA SPOILER WARNING* In the manga Stark and Fern go on a date, however things sadly don't really progress far past there (It will be covered in season 2 whenever it releases)
Sein was a VITAL figure for Stark and Ferns evolution together, despite coming from similar places, stark and fern tend to be really different in action and thinking, but what's worse, they are kids, they have little knowledge on how to handle an argument, or love. Frieren isn't the best image to live up to when it comes to socials, but Sein, sein is a man who had friends, ran around the village and had a lot of experience based on his livings, if not for him, the two lovebirds would've had a horrible time understanding each other. When sein left, stark and Fern already understood eachother, and themselves, so they can keep growing, this time, together. I'm really rooting for S2, i want to see the (SPOILERRR!!!!) Date chapter animated, and i can't wait for their next development in the manga!
I mostly don't like romance in Anime because it's often cheesy and inhibited, like Kindergarten jokes (best example would be Kaguya sama). But Fern and Stark feel natural, like how 2 teenagers would experience their first crush and don't really know how to act. This is one thing why this show is so much more mature.
If you don't mind, some constructive criticism: you have an 8 minute video which is, it seems, supposed to dive into how Fern and Stark's romance is hidden right in front of you. I expected a blow by blow of where they start, how they develop, how it's kept in the background but still makes you feel the progression, etc. Instead, we get the first 2 minutes gushing about storytelling in general - that's 25% of your video - before honing in. We have 1 minute of setting up 'this romance is interesting because' and I think "Great, now he's going to dive into it!" and then you veer off into talking about another video by another user which, while absolutely an interesting video and scene worth talking about, does nothing for this video because the narrative is too unstructured and jumbled. I can see the point you were trying to make, but you made it without setting it up. It is only in the last two minutes when you really talk about their romance and dynamic in a meaningful way, and even then it's just an observation of their dynamic - there's little to no significance tied to it. TL;DR 70% of this video felt like a fluff piece while the last 30% was on topic, but lacked build up needed to do what it set out to do. P.S: Not saying this to be a dick. I genuinely like your channel and videos, this is just something it struggles with.
You need to tell people what the anime you are referencing to is about, otherwise you would lose people right at the beginning of the topic, because they can't understand what you are talking about. But I can see your point, that he could have skipped the first part by saying he introduced the anime in other videos and tell the viewer to watch those, if they want to understand the basics of the anime he is referencing to.
5:35 Don't worry, your Fern and Stark pronunciation is off too, but it's well within okay territory, once had youtube recommend a video about Frieren and the guy pronounced Linie (the girl demon that gets axed by Stark) like lie-knee, which is so brutally wrong I stopped watching, did he even watch Frieren? They do an okay job with names, not perfect, but not this wrong.
Literally after that dance, you can see them smiling more at each other in the backgrounds as they travel. YEAAAHH !!! ANOTHER FRIEREN VIDEO!!!
Fern fell first
*And fell even harder*
WE ARE SO BACK LETS FREAKING GOOOOOOOOOO
grats on 100k
this and Dan Da Dan
Dan Da Dan caught me completely off guard. Amazing Anime.
my problem with romance in anime in general is that it never goes anywhere until the very last episode. very few anime do we see the main couple in a relationship relatively early where we can get to see their interactions as a couple
Friiiireeen!
great stuff
a lil late but congrats on 100k
Can you make a video about Grimgar, Ashes & Illusions? Because I think it's a beautiful anime too.
Nice, Clicked at 10 seconds
2 minutes 👍
18 minutes.
My shipper trash brain is too eternally activated for a romance to ever be hidden from me
Another great "pey talks anime" discussion about Frieren.
The romance between Eisen and Heiter was hidden right under our noses this whole time!
The forbidden romance they had to hide... Not because they're guys, but because Heiter's a priest.
*MANGA SPOILER WARNING*
In the manga Stark and Fern go on a date, however things sadly don't really progress far past there (It will be covered in season 2 whenever it releases)
LETS GO STARKFERN
NEW PEY! WOO
NOICE!
I still don´t understand how some people can label their relationship as "toxic"
I think it comes from people labing fern hitting stark as abuse and labing stark as a future victim of domestic abuse, which is ABSOLUTE MADNESS.
JUST START DATING ALREADY!
YUHHH
The german word "Sein" is exactly pronounced like the english word "sign".
So no need for struggling 😉

Hi
Pey dosint miss. That's all i have to say.
Hello.
This is the exact same phrasing I was intending to use to point out his mispronunciation of Fern and Stark xD
This is "hidden?" I watched this, and the only thing that I thought was, "Man, I wish she'd stop toying with him."
