Hi Anthony, I believe to be one of your oldest student and I must thank you for your excellent pedagogy. My problem is that I do not speak English but I manage more or less ... Please tell me what is the brand of your new bass guitar, I would buy the same one.
Great informative vid Anthony! Helps me (long time bass player hardly ever soloed ) get my ears to a beginning place of understanding and hearing these things I’ve never really connected the dots i On.. TOTALLY HELPFUL! Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
I hate it when the bass solo starts and everybody takes a break and does not give you the chords so you can use your ear to react in the moment. They don't get what support you just gave them!
No great jazz musician of the past played OVER the changes. All of those great jazz musicians of the past, PLAYED the changes. In other words, you dont play over anything, you play the chords! Forget common tones and scales, etc. Your example of the Cmaj7 going to Dbmaj7, one simply just needs to think about the chord tone shapes. C, E, G, B for the C maj7 and Db, F, Ab, C for the Dbmaj7. When you are playing those two chords, everyone should emphasize those notes and one CAN PLAY ANY OTHER NOTE you WANT! So instead of being forced to a 7 note scale, a person now has all 12 notes. Any dissonance should be resolved to a chord tone. It is very liberating and next to zero thinking when one emphasizes the chord tone shapes and plays any note u want, as long as u resolve and emphasize the 4 sweet notes of each chord. That is the chord tones. The human mind is NOT equipped to think of scales and common tones when changes are going by. Scales should be left in a theory class room, they were never meant to be used for soloing. Also, when soloing, everyone today uses way too many notes. It's okay to lay on one note. Occassionally you play a note twice in a row, but it's okay to lay on a note and hold it out and build to the multiple notes. Then the solo will sound like it's going somewhere. It's also okay to put half notes into a solo, not always 8th and 16th notes from start to stop.
With all due love and respect Chad, I’m not a dogmatic person. I’m sharing simple thoughts for anyone open minded enough to consider. If you don’t mind me asking, can I hear you play please? I’m very curious to hear you.
@@AnthonyMuthurajah Open minded to consider with scales is like saying....Be open minded to having a surgeon cut you open with a pencil tip. You can't use that excuse for everything. Go listen to any old Jazz player like Carol Kaye and she will tell you the same thing. You DONT solo over anything, you play through the changes by understanding and emphasizing the chord tones. Then you can play ANY other note you want as long as you resolve to a chord tone. It's so simple!
that bass solo over the strings were just so nice
The title alone is perfect.

@@BeatKid9000 That's right! Scales are limiting and stifling!
So I guess the whole kind of blue thing where you pick a mode and stick to it is not jazz?
