Best part of this song was Quincy Jones, the gentleman conducting event, a great man on his own who put a sign at the door of the studio for all the artists as they came in: "Check Your Egos At The Door".
What was so amazing about this song to us back then was that every voice was instantly recognizable as belonging to a huge star. It was almost unbelievable to see them standing around together like this, swaying like a high school chorus. Simple little song but it moved the whole world.

I realized during this performance that you did not know who Bruce Springsteen was, the guy you were impressed with. Just one of the best performers of all time, along with all the other big names in the group. The amount of talent shown in this video is crazy. All are top notch artists from many different eras & genres of music. Don't think something like this will ever happen again. Sadly quite a few artists that are featured are no longer with us.
The two gentlemen were Bruce Springsteen, aka the Boss and Stevie Wonder. They're still performing currently. This song was a collaboration done in 1985 to raise African famine relief. It raised about 50 million dollars. To answer your question, there was no auto tune until 1997. What you here were musicians who could sing.

Best part of this song was Quincy Jones, the gentleman conducting event, a great man on his own who put a sign at the door of the studio for all the artists as they came in: "Check Your Egos At The Door".
What was so amazing about this song to us back then was that every voice was instantly recognizable as belonging to a huge star. It was almost unbelievable to see them standing around together like this, swaying like a high school chorus. Simple little song but it moved the whole world.

That back & forth between Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen was my favourite part, too. Also the very beginning. Iäve always loved Paul Simon and just about everything he has ever done musically, and it's such a shame that no one seems to recognize/remember him anymore. After all, he's composed so many songs that literally everyone recognizes even today. He's a legend.

For those that don’t know, the song raised 28 million in 1983 to feed starving children in Africa . Bob Geldof, the producer, wasn’t satisfied . He wanted more. He booked Wembley Stadium and the run down JFK Stadium in South Philadelphia in 1985 to host the event. Acts from all over asked to perform. In the end, they raised $140 million in one day. I had it on MTV for almost all day.
Netflix just released a behind-the-scenes documentary about this song. It's called The Greatest Night In Pop. It tells everything from who had the idea to the repercussions. Michael Jackson might be the most famous in that room, but there are many legends there. Stevie Wonder is a living legend, he sings the same way to this day, it's worth knowing more about his songs and work and Michael Jackson revered him.
The pure talent and creativity in that place will never be rivaled.

I still remember when this song premiered in 1985. I was 13. EVERYONE donated money to this cause. The images on tv were haunting. Children in Ethiopia were skeletons and dying by the hour. I obviously know every single legend that took part in this beautiful song that spread love all over the world.

That this song was ever made is so unbelievable - and they must have been exhausted afterwards. Recorded after the music awards show so instead of partying they went recording - Michael didn't even think he was going to sing he was just co-writing... :-)
