Eddie and Alex complimented each other in their music. I can understand if Alex doesn't want to play anymore. There will NEVER be another like Eddie and Alex.
I wish Wolf would have bought everything and kept it in the family! Maybe a silent bidder if he felt uncomfortable or something. I'm sure Alex is having a tough time with the loss of Ed. They were very close. What a GREAT legacy I got to witness at just the right time in my life!!
If Alex Van Halen is in fact done with drumming, I wish him all of the best. I honestly couldn't see him play without his late great brother. His drumming will always continue to inspire me.
Alex is right. There is NO Van Halen without Edward, period. Let him retire in peace. The man is 71 years old and fully deserves to live out the next chapter in his life with family and friends.
Poor Wolfgang. One can understand the sadness he feels because not only does he know so much about both his Father & his Uncle's legacy but in the 21st century Wolf himself played an active musical part in it...He was up on that drum riser feeling the thunder of Alex's live playing with some of those magnificent drumkits....He felt the family camaraderie of he & his relatives playing their instruments locked together as a tight sonic juggernaut . When Wolf sees Alex's drumkits he will know exactly what Alex was using them for and when...The white kit that Alex built himself from shells for the WACF tour in 1980,,,,The Multi kick drum B&W striped kit on the mighty Fair Warning Tour,,,The simple silver Ludwig kit from the very first VH tour in 1978. The Purple 1984 set up and of course the kits when Wolf himself was up there on the 2007-2008 & 2012, 2015 tours......One even had a mini fridge in it to keep beers cool. .....lol .....All these kits were amazing parts of musical history & I'm sure Wolf might have discussed them at length with his own drummer in Mammoth Garrett Whitlock. I can understand why many find it hard to accept it's the end of an era, I sure do, but Van Halen died with Eddie unfortunately. 😢 Alex is 71 years old now, my best guess is he wants to downsize. It's been said he has a warehouse full of gear so I can see why he would want to cut the overhead at this stage of his life. I don't think any of his kids really got into music so Alex's music related inventory probably doesn't mean much to them. I think the auctions are a great idea because the musical possessions of such an iconic musician belongs to the fans. A portion of the profits are also going to charity so it's a win for everyone involved. Another tough reality is Alex has suffered major hearing loss in both his ears so extending his career to play with anyone beside his Brother is probably not worth it to him. With that said, if he ever wanted to do a one off here and there down the road, it would be easy enough for him to get another kit if he doesn't keep at least one. I looked at the June auction, it appeared that only a fraction of his stuff was put up for bid, highlighted by his 5150 drum kit. I'm assuming there will be multiple auctions, it will be interesting to see what's up for grabs from the 1970's to 1984.
Since VH’s inception, I’ve liked many groups, but loved only one. I got into the school band because of Eddie and Alex. As a drummer, my idol has, and always will be Alex VH. Like many fans, Oct 6, 2020 was a gut-wrenching day. Hearing that Alex is selling everything, is also a gut punch. I was so engorged with VH growing up, I studied them, mainly Alex and Ed. The only thing surprising to me about Alex selling his career collection, is that he was able to hold out this long. I know I am only 1 of millions, who hurt for him. The only people surprised or questioning why he would sell his things, are casual fans, the media, or those too young to have known of their unbelievable talents until the end of their careers. Van Halen for me, are the very top of any/every musical group ever, the rest are/were just average. I hurt for Alex especially, but also Wolfie and the entire VH family. Van Halen will live in my heart forever.
Wise words. We don’t live forever and forcing our loved ones to sort thru our stuff and sell it is a daunting task. His stuff, his choice, not silver spoon Wolfie.
It is truly sad to see Alex go but i understand when you have a bond that strong with someone for so long and have been through the highs and the lowes and have accomplished so much it would be hard to go on by yourself i would have to ask myself do i still want to do it and what would Edward want me to do

"This major sale seems to be a sign that Alex might not return to the music world in the same capacity as before." Wow. Stellar insight. You really have your fingers on the pulse of the situation. This, kids, is what zero effort sounds like.
Alex is 71 years old, and his brother is gone. Playing that style of drums at his age is very difficult, and without his brother, not much interest to him. So, you do what every living being has to do at some point... you let go of your material things. He gets to take all that weight off his shoulders... no longer his problem to take care of. And somebody else gets to the enjoy the instruments, and Alex can donate or give to his heirs a much easier to manage form of wealth. His family will not have to take on the burden of managing all that material stuff. This is how life works... you live your life, then in the twilight years you do the responsible thing and make it easy for your loved ones.
Going through this now. Bullshit estate planning and trusts and stuff like that - total madness. Pay some taxes or whatever but get rid of it or split it up while you’re still around and don’t leave a giant tangle that doesn’t help your heirs.
I remember seeing VH at a place called called Golden West in Norwalk where I was raised in So. Cal. I thank Jesus that I was born in 1960. And became a musician. And that God gave us So many great musicians. Like Van Halen, the wonderful music that’s blessed us in that era. If Alex is calling it quits. So be it, he’s more than paid his dues to us fans and the music world. People forget how much these musicians give up to do what they love. And we as fans love them for doing it. To Wolfgang, your uncle has lived his Hay Day, life. And his brother your father is out of his life now. Together they were a catalyst. What part of the catalyst is gone now? Trying to realize how he feels for yourself and his shoes before you judge him. And realize it’s your turn now to carry the torch and play some of their songs to keep Van Halen alive in the public side and all us original fans. We all wish you the best Wolfgang and you’re doing a great job. Just take what I said to heart. Maybe I can meet you someday shake your hand because there’s a Bass Player Lee Vocalist I know it’s not an easy Road. God bless you all.
No, I am not at all surprised that Al is putting all his stuff on auction , but I fully share Wolf's kind of sad and empty feeling : It is the end of everything that has always stand...❤
I understand that he's selling everything, what everybody else doesn't understand if he changes his mind all he has to do is pick up a phone and call Ludwig drums, they were shower him with anything he needs, that's if he chooses to do that.
this is a happy day. Let him live. He is sharing his legacy with all his fans through this special auction. VanHalen ain't coming back without Eddie you nut jobs .
I wonder if we aren't looking at this all...... WRONG!! As fans we have our own thoughts about this decision from our perspective. If you take the time to think of it from Alex's point of view it's not necessarily because he's "heart broken" over the loss of his long time partner in music and brother. (Yeah of course that's got to be upsetting as a brother). Yet, I wonder if it doesn't also leave a pretty wealthy guy in a place where he's really considering what else he might do with the time freed up. "Retirement" we all think about a Rock Band at Van Halen's success level as, "Wow that'd be awesome to live that life"....and I'm sure a lot of what's involved was pretty damned AWESOME but it's also a commitment of time and work that isn't at all unlike any other job where Alex was expected to be places and do things that tore him away from other pursuits in life for significant periods of time. So I come back to Eddie passing away and the impact that has on Alex. In an instant it's a wake up to the idea that life is a finite thing. Time guaranteed to no-one. If Alex suddenly can't see performing without his brother on stage. If he doesn't see himself ever committing to an actual tour again. If he's thinking about all the OTHER STUFF he could be doing with his time. It doesn't surprise me at all that he' selling everything off. He's married. He's got family and friends that he's no doubt doing other things with and making plans to do the stuff a busy work life in Music might not have always allowed for. "Sad"? Nope. I'm thinking this amounts to simple retirement after a long really successful career. I bet he's got a wife, family, friends and pursuits that are now much higher on his priority list than music. At some point we'll probably see him playing anyway. He's just selling off the massive amount of stuff he doesn't need because he's not anticipating every touring and playing seriously again.
I’m old. I’m downsizing. It’s very difficult because I don’t wanna give any of my ‘good stuff’ away. But as George Carlin once said… It’s just stuff! 😮
I think at this point everybody in the band are trolling each other..intentionally or not. I'm positive Sammy makes up stories just so it gets back to Alex!
Quick question: has Alex actually made any kind of announcement whatsoever about no longer playing music? Or is everyone just speculating because he’s selling off all of his gear? Because in truth, that doesn’t mean a damn thing. Alex Van Halen would have no problem acquiring a drum set if he wanted to jam with someone. but if he has made an announcement, someone let me know would ya? I haven’t seen one… But if he is done playing, everyone should really just leave him alone. He doesn’t owe anyone anything
Alex has the right to sell whatever he wants. What does he need to prove anymore? Every good thing must come to an end. Nevertheless, the music will always be there, just like Mozart, Hendrix, Bernstein, etc, Van Halen"s music will always be selling and playing.
No brainer to sell the equipment - most of it has no practical use anymore. Designed to wow arena audiences in the early 80s. Doesn’t mean anything really. If he wanted to play somewhere Ludwig would send him a functioning set yesterday. I find it refreshing. These were tools for him. He’s retired. Don’t leave that stuff for the family to have to deal with lawyers on. Get rid of it.
I think Alex should team up with Slash & bring back multiple great vocalist that have slowed down & put out another great ROCK album & then turn around & do it again with Steve Vai ....... Just a different world but still can put out good rockin music
@@MikeHart72 I do support his decision but just don't hope this has anything to do with eddie .... he holds his own in the world of rock & everybody passes just don't hope it's weighing him down ....
I'm glad Alex has come to this decision. So many rock musicians try to take their careers to far. They push it to a point where the music sounds pathetic as a bloated musician tries to relive his/her glory days in some kind of skeleton band just to make a little extra cash.
Van Halen is not a band that can carry on without Eddie. I'm glad it didn't turn into a mediocre shit show with a new guitar player. We have the music for the rest of our lives to jam to. Thanks VH!
I could immediately tell this was AI created and I skipped it. I would ask everyone else to do the same when encountering AI unless you don't value human creativity anymore. Sorry AI overlord, please don't punish me like YT does when I complain. Oh crap, what have I done!?!? lol!!!!!!!!!
This video it’s a total lie. Wolf never said any of this. It was Michael Anthony who said these things about Al. I’m sick of these AI generated blurbs on VH from people who know absolutely nothing about the band.

Just remember everything you own today will be someone else's someday.
I think at this point everybody in the band are trolling each other..intentionally or not.
I'm positive Sammy makes up stories just so it gets back to Alex!
I would have thought that Alex would have let Wolfie have first dibs on everything ?
Quick question: has Alex actually made any kind of announcement whatsoever about no longer playing music? Or is everyone just speculating because he’s selling off all of his gear? Because in truth, that doesn’t mean a damn thing. Alex Van Halen would have no problem acquiring a drum set if he wanted to jam with someone. but if he has made an announcement, someone let me know would ya? I haven’t seen one… But if he is done playing, everyone should really just leave him alone. He doesn’t owe anyone anything
Time marches on.
Why don’t Wolfgang buy it all?
I'm sure Alex probably have one or two nice sets for Wolfgang. Families do give something to a close family member before they passed away.
Well, maybe Wolfy can purchase all of his stuff
I completely sympathise. Who are you gonna play with????
I think Alex should team up with Slash & bring back multiple great vocalist that have slowed down & put out another great ROCK album & then turn around & do it again with Steve Vai ....... Just a different world but still can put out good rockin music
Alex obviously doesn’t feel the same. Let the man retire and live a quiet life
@@MikeHart72 I do support his decision but just don't hope this has anything to do with eddie .... he holds his own in the world of rock & everybody passes just don't hope it's weighing him down ....
@@wilburmullett Maybe it’s because Alex is in his 70’s and has had enough. The golden years are calling and he wants to relax
Did Wolfgang buy any of his uncles stuff?
Who fking cares! Everything ends!! Alex needs to get on with his life!
TROLL COMMENT…..and the entire ROCK COMMUNITY cares. Everyone knows who Alex Van Halen is and what he has done for Rock and Roll
So Wolfgang is sad and this is the end of an era?
This video was an exercise in how many ways you can say the same thing.
It's called retirement folks! Wish I could!!
The drive of Van Halen was Eddy, he would not have made it without him same as the rest
You live by the sword, you die by the sword. The cows came home!
I pray God invades his heart with peace thanks for a lifetime of music Alex
I'm glad Alex has come to this decision. So many rock musicians try to take their careers to far. They push it to a point where the music sounds pathetic as a bloated musician tries to relive his/her glory days in some kind of skeleton band just to make a little extra cash.
Maybey he should of kept a couple of drum sets
Great musicians, extremely bizarre people. All of them.
Van Halen is not a band that can carry on without Eddie. I'm glad it didn't turn into a mediocre shit show with a new guitar player. We have the music for the rest of our lives to jam to. Thanks VH!
Well unfortunately slammy and Mike are trying to get satriani to be the next vh. From what I've seen it's a complete embarrassment!
Clickbait... Wolfgang never says a word... It's an AI narrator... or worse... a really shitty voice over.... move along nothing to see or hear here
I’m thinking about did he really sell everything he’s has sons that I’m sure have some special items of his legacy
Enjoy retirement Alex.
It's all just sad
And Lars Ulrich is still on tour....no justice.
This video it’s a total lie. Wolf never said any of this. It was Michael Anthony who said these things about Al. I’m sick of these AI generated blurbs on VH from people who know absolutely nothing about the band.
maybe he needs the money?
Believe me he don't need the money. From what I understand he's worth around 90 million.
You know, if he one day he wants to play again, I think he has enough money to buy new gear. 🙄
People feel bad for a famous persons relative dieing but i couldn't quit my job when my brother died.stop with the. Excuses & no reason good enough for not having tribute concert
I predict it's just a "Comercial" Stunt, when Alex Comes back,He will sell out everywhere he is playing,we see this with Bands and musicians "Reuniting " tons of Times in the Past, it's a Marketing Scheme. Look For Alex to be Playing again,Coming Soon to a Theater Near You.
No,Alex is in bad health walking around with a cane and a neck brace. He's done but the music will live on
Its a signal,,,I'm done so dont ask.
He auctioned off his old drum kits from old Van Halen tours....WHO CARES !!!...Hey Chicken Little...The Sky is Falling...The nuts can't stop reading into it with their Fake News....lol.
Who tf makes these silly AI videos? There was never a possibility of the band reuniting. When EVH died the band died.
Hes old enough to retire...next
Wolffang got heavy
Alex Fup
Wolfgang and bronny james....
Are both pretty bad
Now let's ask Bronny James what he thinks. yawn.
Wolfgang has talent ,his dad and uncle had no talent.
End of story.
