      @Laura Streeter Obviously they couldn't be that horrible she is a principle dancer. Many women who started at 3 couldn't even achieve that 😘

    being 5 foot 2, African american,starting at a late age, and not having the typical ballerina body wow... believe it of not but she is a very inspiring person breaking all these barriers,she lets young girls know that they can be anything they wish to be if they work hard

      I know! This really inspires me because I've just started ballet a couple months ago and I'm 13 and everyone told me I would never be a principal dancer, or even on pointe, but this video really got me thinking

      SHE IS probably more than 50% Caucasian BUT SHE IS AFRICAN AMERICAN by WHITE people
      definition, just like Obama is. Not her/his fault.

    • @kuroneko7022

      +Puckles 100 and you know this how?? Are you a geneticist? I've seen fairer skinned people with straighter hair than hers and they identify as black. You mad because she identifies as black and not "mixed"? Lots of mixed people identify as black because no matter how mixed they are, they know which side of the fence they're accepted by and belong to. And, that black is dominant in genes. FAIL! lmao

    • @callalily8345
      @callalily8345 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You only want her to be 50% Caucasian when she's successful. If she was any other African-American struggling, you wouldn't dare point out the Caucasian in her.

    Being a dancer that doesn't have the "ballet body", I feel that she is a true role model not just for dancers but for every girl alive. I hope to see her on stage live someday.

      Lorraine Ashby can u do ballet at the age of 15 I stopped as a little girl but I love dance and I'm so scared to do it again because of how much time I've lost with ballet?

      keke rezel Dear Keke I have never done ballet but my daughter started at 14 yrs with no prior training and was told she had the flexibility and musicality. I searched the internet for some information and someone else asked the same question and they were considerably older than you and the word 'flexibility' seemed to be of key importance. Keke don't be scared - what have you got to lose; if you don't try then you will never know, plus it depends on whether you want to do it as an interest or a career and how determined you are. If I were you I would call a ballet school and talk to someone who can give you some good advice - at least it's a step in the right direction. If it it really in your heart to dance then take that first step - I wish you all the very best and hope everything works out for you ~ regards Lorraine :o)

    As a former pro ballet dancer, I had her body and was always at war with it! It's time for a change in classical ballet --- it's a new era and the art form has to evolve or die. Misty exemplifies every aspect of what's great about this evolution.

    I remember when I first saw this video. I was a little girl feeling ostracised and alone by the other girls at my dance school because I was different. Only my love of dance kept me coming back. I don't dance anymore, but this video taught me to trust in myself to be my own artist and understand my self worth. It helped me through the times where I felt invisible and underappreciated, thankyou Misty Copeland you are truly an amazing role model!

    I remember a story she told that served as an example of the racism that exists in ballet that so much a part of that culture that people sometimes brazen about it, or lack the basic introspection that it would take to think about their expectations. Some time back, her company was doing Swan Lake and the girls were told not to let themselves get darker, rather they had to avoid the sun at all costs because they needed to be as pale as possible. Great message to send.

    • @bevhatle
      @bevhatle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being in the corps de ballet is about uniformity, thats why they all wear the same costume and same hairdo etc. Skin tone is to be same so as not to call attention to any one person in particular but to have the dancers in unison in the choreography. If a dancer does not fit into the corps than they better have something extra special so they can get soloist or principal dancer parts. It just so happens that ballet has origins in white culture. It's not about racism. If a person stands out in body type as well, they may not be able to cut it as a professional ballet dancer. There are many variables involved, its not about racism.

    This video is a true inspiration to me. I started taking ballet very seriously last year, and started giong to a serious ballet school. I found out all that I didn't know and and I was soooo discouraged but I eventually got better and better even though SOOOO many people said very rude things to me about my desision to be serious about dance. They said "what good would ballet do for you" or "I hope in 15 years your not disappointed with all the time you spent all on ballet. Even though these things hurt, I proced forward. I have Ben told so many times that you have to have this you have to have that to be a good ballet dancer. Now I know in order to be a true artist you can work with what you have and make it wonderful like this brilliant artist. I may not be the best. I may have trouble with a few steps. But every day I go to class I feel myself improve and am one step closer to becoming a professional dancer.

    Such poise, beauty, strength and intelligence. Miss Copeland has been uplifted as a revolutionary wonder but she has actually been a champion of the conservation of a classical art form helping the public see the power and majesty in traditional arts.

      Melissa Carlill , well stated. Not sure your age or genre of film interest, however the finale' of this clip reminded me very much of a scene from the movie "FLASH DANCE" with Jennifer Beals in the eighties. Another mullata sistah' , quite, attractive as well who also had the honed gift of extra-ordinarily ELOQUENT PHYSICAL expression through , balanced, precise, energetic and integrated movement.

    • @sidlopes4429
      @sidlopes4429 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ghostofxmaspast , wait a sec I want to get at that, she didn't say anything is definite *she said anything is "possible". If you don't have an m.d. licence you can't have legal medical practice that is true /HOWEVER, if you apply the "suspension of disbelief approach, mindset, strategy" to endeavor than the REALITY thar your personal values and aspiration can coincide with outside external desired dreams eventualities becomes less unreal. Without that NO ONE who ever succeeded in ANY fashion or overcame odds in any respects, would have even tried to do so to begin with, that isn't just misleading "pie in the sky" THAT IS A SOLID FACT. By the way WE are all very proud of you at the "DREAMS ARE US , coorporation" we support what you are doing and urge you to continue forth on your worthwhile goals and pursuits and aspirations. : - )

      Marilyn Malcolm Misty identifies herself purely as african-american, and her challenges and treatment in the ballet world certainly reflected that. She refuses to be identified as anything but African-American. Her choice. Hell, all African Americans are biracial if you want to get technical about.

    My favourite of all of your videos! She speaks with so much intelligence and clarity and her messages are simply awesome! Thank you so much for this! This is what ballet dancers and fans need to hear! This is real motivation! Cheers!

    She is so awesome :) I'm a bigger built person and I've always been self conscious I my weight. I started dance at 11. And my dream is to be a ballerina. I'm so doubtful of my self and then I come to this prayer I want to share with whoever may be reading this: Dear Lord, if today I lose my way, remind me your plans are bigger than my dreams. So yeah I may want to be a ballerina, but if being a ballerina is what God wants me to do, then my "restrictions" won't matter

      That's BEAUTIFUL Olivia. Keep the FAITH as whatever you want The Most High wants you 2 have AND THEN SOME. Shalom ballerina.

      I am not the dancer shape myself, but I am a jazz, tap, and ballet dancer who will be starting lyrical soon. Do what you feel you are meant to do, no matter what.

      Oh no! ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU'RE ALIGNED WITH THE MOST HIGH. Truly, that's the only way to fly! If the Creator doesn't want you to be something, HE won't give you the desire to be it. Shalom.

    Is she popular because shes good, or because shes mixed race? She speaks very inspiring, so thats pretty much why I dont mind the hype. But still.

      She popular because she is an accomplished dancer and broke through the barriers with hard work. It seems you would have already checked her dancing out before asking an ignorant and obvious racist comment.

      jewelnabq01 shes nit that good to me, seriously. So if you want to make it a racist thing go ahead, the internet allows you to be as ignorant as what you acuse other people of. I dont care if im qualified or not, and I dont have to. Im entitled to an oppinion, which unfortunately your pious face is too. Touche

    • @jewelnabq01
      @jewelnabq01 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rean Combrinck You made it racist by asking it if she was "mixed race". You didn't even bother to find out how good she was. BTW it wouldn't kill you to pick up a grammar book or use spell check. Try using a "dic-shun-airey". Now I see why you made such a asinine statement or "oppinion". LOL

    Shes talented, but her body just kills me, she's an amazing ballerina but she just has to much muscle, it just takes away the grace, she looks more like a wrestler than a ballerina. Why do Americans have to make everything about strength, look at the Russian ballerinas, slim, petite and graceful. I just can't find grace and harmony watching her. The last thing I want is to see ballerinas looking like wrestlers.

    This young woman is amazing. I am going to see her next season at the Met. I am just waiting for her to get her well deserved promotion. She should be dancing the role of The White Swan.
