Into The Unknown: Nunavut's Forgotten River (Gateway to the Arctic / EP 5)

  • Gateway to the Arctic is a 6-part video series documenting the 2022 month-long expedition through Canada’s barren lands. The route is designed to explore the iconic landscapes of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut by attempting to travel over 800 km from the tree line of Great Slave Lake north to the Arctic Ocean.
We would like to acknowledge and pay respect to the Akaitcho Dene and Inuit peoples whose ancestral lands we traveled through as part of this trip. We recognize that our own understanding and experience is limited, and that Indigenous peoples hold the knowledge and wisdom of their unique relationship with this land.

For tracking up stream you can make a sling with rope that loops under the boat, tied on at the seat position, in the center of the rope on the bottom there is a loop to tie to, this puts all the pull on the lowest portion of the canoe which helps reduce the rolling of the boat in tricky water, like lowering your center of gravity by kneeling in the canoe. Poles would be nice to have on these bony bolder sections for up stream and down stream. In some old photographs you can see both bow and stern men polling. My gosh some huge fish to be had up there! I like how you all changed up the pace instead of pushing the grind for the end.

The canoeing and fishing footage is epic as always, but this landscape! Wow. So stark. Yet you catch the fine details like cloudberries, flowers, bees, geology! Kudos for showing all this when it would be so easy to just film the rivers and lakes. 👍

Thanks again gentlemen, for ANOTHER fantastic adventure. Love the life lessons. Whether you intend them or not. Facing adversity? Gettin'down? Cowboy up. Keep diggin'. And Noah...I never had more than a passing interest in geology until my grandson decided in the 5th grade that he wanted to be a geologist so he could go to Mars. Thanks for the lessons.

Cloudberries are very common overhere in Scandinavia and are my favourite berry to make jam from.
What can be more delicious then waffles with cloudberryjam and whipped cream ?!!
Northern part of Canada seem to be a fantastic place to have a fishing trip to.
Those trouts you have caught during your trip has been amazing.
Hopefully i can visit your part of the world in the future.
    That would be fantastic.

I forgot how thick and incessant the black flies and mosquitoes are up there. I worked in an exploration camp with Texasgulf in the summer of 1976 on the south end of Contwoyto lake. You kind of get used to the bugs. I didn’t wear a head net but my camp mate did. Until he tried to eat a sandwich through the mesh.

Such a GREAT Series! Been absolutely loving it so far! I have read a lot of historical accounts of Samuel Hearne and some of the trappers like Helge Ingstad, Hornby & Daoust who trapped and lived throughout this area - seeing it through your lens has been a complete joy to watch. I would personally love to make up to this area to experience it for myself! Can not wait to make it back up to the East Arm of Great Slave Lake this summer!
