It seems like it all boils down to taste and competence. I have a friend who is a professional guitarist who brings his Fractal to church, he plugs it in and plays beautifully. I have another friend who also owns a Fractal. He plugs it and messes with it the whole rehearsal, and sadly, the music takes a back seat. It's too much technology for the second guy.
Our church is overflowing with tech. When it works, it's really great. For instance, the ability to do a zoom call with missionaries for the congregation and have it all look and sound great is wonderful. We did stuff like that 25 years ago... we held an SM58 up to a telephone that was wired into the room. It sounded terrible, but it still worked. I would argue that modern technology is better in the situation.
Leaning on tech to put on a great show... I see that is a problem on every level. Because of the kind of person I am, I always watch church tech tours on TH-cam. It seems like many of these churches are more about the show than mindful worship.
I personally find a hymnal to be very distracting. I can't sight read, and I'm old enough that I can't see well. I also can't really sing. With a projection screen, My eyes are up, so it's easier to try to sing, and I can glance at the rest of my churchmates singing with me. Should the lights be dim during the singing time? For me, I don't want to be in the dark, but it eases my self consciousness if I don't feel like I have a spotlight on me.
This was a great conversation. There have been days at home and at church where I'm tempted to throw out all modern technology and live a simple life.... but that' just not me ;)

26:50 - We keyboardists really should be leading worship from a vibraphone and a Minimoog. Gonna do some research into this.

I used to use a Minimoog, OB-8 and DX7 on the worship team back in the 80s. Don't own any of them anymore (they've been replaced many times over since). I work as a media composer, and use a Casio Privia PX-S3100 piano for the worship team (and leave the synths at home). Vibraphone and Minimoog (or any synth) would be great on a worship team!

If you're not leading prayer through a talkbox, are you really trying? 😄
