    Me and @FishShopMatt put a huge amount of effort into this one and it's my first proper co2 injected tank. We've had it planned for months! We went crazy on the planting and over stocked the number of betta fish. The idea of this is that it gives each fish places to hide if they want but there are too many Betta fish for them to get their own territories. Having territories is what creates aggression. Kind of the same thing with a Cichlid tank. Any aggression is dispersed between all of them. The tank is now a week old and I've seen very little aggression between any fish but will obviously keep monitoring as we go.

      Love the new studio. Love the technicolour over planted betta tank.
      You should definitely stick a male in with the harem, Maybe not Hellboy though. A young 'alien' metallic betta would be better. A younger fish would grow up and get used to the environment and tankmates before breeding behaviour begins. Also an Alien better would look awesome and produce metallic babies!

    • @Heavenlyartdolls
      @Heavenlyartdolls ปีที่แล้ว

      I think one male Betta would be OK but if they breed and he makes a bubble nest, he may kill the other females because you’re very protective over their babies, and only the male stays with the babies

    I kept x15 in a sorority in a 40g tank for a year - only had to take out one for safety, and it was maybe 3 months in. She went from fine to shredded overnight though, and I'm extremely grateful I saw her limping along in the morning and got her out safely. I had a 20+ school of neon tetras for dithers, corys along the bottom, and a million shrimp. It was a really pretty and active tank, excessively planted so that there were plenty of safe spaces to run away to. I did start with them all very small. Maybe half the age of the ones you put in. Ohhhh and I did end up with two that were not actually female...largely because they were all so small, and my main selection criteria was that they needed to be similar sized, which ended up having them too small to be sexed easily. In retrospect, I wished I'd also kept a look-out for variety in color and finstyle as well. I ended up with mostly white bodies+red fins, which were beautiful butttttttt very similar to each other :)
    I can't remember his name but there's a youtuber who goes into a lot of the really interesting science behind fish set ups, and he keeps multiple males and females in his massive betta tank. He was well aware that aggression ramped up during feeding and breeding, and kept a very careful eye on them. Any time the girls start looking plump and maybe broody, he takes them + whichever male they've been kinda flirting with out and keeps them in a holding tank until they've bred or changed their minds. He also puts the female back into the main tank once she's laid, as it's dads job then.
    I think you could get away with a male, as your tank is big and there is enough activity going on to spread out the aggression...but I know you love baby fish, and I think it might stress dad out to be trying to protect his babies from all the hungry neighbors. And it might be a stupid amount of work for him to be diving down so deep to rescue his babies and keep them at the surface. Not too mention it might be too deep of a tank for betta fry to have successful hiding places and also enough surface access. This last bit is pure theory though, and I'll be very interested to see if you give it a go.

    • @shayxie8318
      @shayxie8318 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      do keep an eye on those stress stripes though...my babies took a bit to get used to my giant face watching them constantly and it took a couple weeks for my magical appearance to stop being stressful for them...but eventually they dgaf and thankfully stopped showing stress stripes at me.

    The females look pretty stressed still. Those stripes usually indicate stress and their clamped tails. They will take a while to settle in, regardless. The tank is gorgeous 🤩 I'd be interested to see how the females are doing in s few weeks. I had planted sorority tank with 12 females for years. A bit fiddley at first but once they established themselves they did great.

    I used to have a sorority, and people would lose their minds over it. Apparently since THEY didn't manage to make it work, mine was destined for failure. I just didn't give any unique/single decorations for them to get territorial over, and kept my stocking numbers relatively high, much like many people do with cichlids. Then they didn't have a pecking order, and nobody was targeted. Worked fine for years, until I moved, and sold them all. :)

    I've chosen to not ever make a sorority tank because I've heard way too many horror stories. People who are experienced with betta sororities says it's not a matter of "if" the sorority will fail, but a matter of "when" the sorority fails. Sorority failures are almost always inevitable.

    • @amx1820
      @amx1820 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    • @Reptile_Gecko
      @Reptile_Gecko ปีที่แล้ว +16

      mhm, honestly same, the closest I'd do is a split tank, but that's purely to just make it easier and more seamless looking on a shelf, but they'd still be treated as separate spaces, sadly there's no real benefit to sororities anyways, so even when they work it is very likely the fish are stressed and because they don't want to appear weak many animals hide these affects until they can't, so the "when," could just be some individuals getting fed up.

    • @anoobis_
      @anoobis_ ปีที่แล้ว +58

      60 bettas in a single tank sounds stressful enough. I don't see the point of keeping fish that are territorial in nature together when u can just keep other species of fish. Not all female bettas can be kept together. A part of me hopes that this tank is not permanent, but where would the bettas go if that happens.

      most hobbyists' sororities are in like a 20g with sparse decor and only 5 fish. This much bigger, well-planted tank with a much higher stocking density is a very different setup, and there are accounts of long term success when sororities are set up this way. It's worth seeing how this plays out before you write off sororities in general. I think betta sororities are just done poorly by the majority of hobbyists.

    That's really a beautiful tank, I just don't think putting bettas in such a big community doesn't work good for them. Alot of them are stressed, you can notice it thru the strips on their body, knowing that's 6 days since you put them and alot of them can't still adjust in the environment. I just hope they can survive.

    Holy crap, this tank looks amazing! You have always gotten really good color in your plants, but I am blown away by the colors in this tank! That CO2 reactor seems like a really good idea. I have always been the same way, I just don’t want to fuss with refilling the tanks etc. Now I’m really rethinking my no CO2 stance. I haven’t paid much attention but I think that there is also some kind of in-line CO2 set up so you don’t see all those bubbles. Also I think you should get a couple of really cushy armchairs with wheels. Beautiful beautiful tank!

    Sometimes the females will also go after other species of fish too - I had one who hated danios and I had to resque the remainer after she literally took a giant chunk out of one of them. THe male I had during that time (different tank) did just fine with other species of fish. He was a sweetheart - she was a demon. It was so drastic, that difference.

    Hi MD, your C02 diffuser would circulate better opposite to the outflow. So in a long tank like this place your inflow and outflow on one side and the diffuser on the other. That way you get a circular C02 flow around the whole tank. If you have them both on one side the opposite side might not get enough C02. Best way is to see if all the C02 bubbles circulate around the whole of the tank and don't just rise to the surface. If they circulate well atm no problem. But it can be tricky to get placement and flow right

    If the bubbles are bothering you, then you should try a co2 reactor(not to be confused with the cylinder you have) instead of a ceramic disk defuser. That should take care of the bubbles.

    If you don’t like the bubbly look, you can get an inline CO2 reactor to pre-dissolve the bubbles before they reach the tank. It’s confusing because the word “reactor” usually just describes a container that you hook up to your canister filter output line that mixes water with CO2. It will fully dissolve the bubbles and you won’t see them anymore!

  • @localhylian8951
    @localhylian8951 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Please be careful with that many bettas in that size tank MD... While the scape is beautiful and provides a lot of hiding, its realistically suitable for 6 to 7 bettas. If you're going to do a sorority, you really need at a minimum 30-40L per fish so they can establish their own territories. You also need to be very careful picking the individuals because in a sorority the girls, they establish a hierarchy and that is what keeps the peace. If they can't do that in a group they will fight to the death just like males do. Plus if you see those bars on the bettas along their sides, it means they're really stressed, which being in a large group will do and can cause premature deaths. You won't get the best out of the fish if you set it up like this. So I strongly recommend you reduce how many bettas are in the tank for the wellbeing of the fish, its just a ticking time bomb with that many.

    • @MDFishTanks
      @MDFishTanks  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      We are going for the idea/theory the same with cichlids. We don't want them to establish territories, because that will in turn cause more aggression. Early days of course but so far so good....👍

    • @Reptile_Gecko
      @Reptile_Gecko ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@MDFishTanks Even without the territories they'll likely still fight for hierarchy, so probably want to keep a very close eye to make sure no one is getting overly beat up as some might especially with so many. Having a few spare tanks, tubs or jars would be good at least with safe water you can just change regularly if you don't have the filtration, then it would allow you to have containers to immediately be able to remove any big bullies are very injured ones.

    • @Reptile_Gecko
      @Reptile_Gecko ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jamesnoonan7450 it just depends on the individuals, not all bettas are the same, some become quite the bullies, and some can be too soft and even up getting ganged up on, luckly with such a high number of bettas a few getting removed here and there in the beginning wouldn't destroy the chance of the remaining bettas working. But you can get aggressive individuals in any animal even social ones, so being weary never hurts when lives are on the line, especially since with bettas they aren't necessarily a "social," species so don't require a group setting to thrive and some individuals ofc don't thrive in that setting, so having at least spare containers with safe water on hand (since sometimes people need to do prior preparation to make water safe) doesn't hurt especially in the beginning.

  • @joerock9095
    @joerock9095 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    MD, always been amazed at what you've been able to grow without co2. You'll be trimming like a mad man with it! That said, on the normal bottle front you can just bulk buy old c02 fire extinguishers, and when they run out switch over. Don't know the spec on this Colombo regulator but hopefully it's a dual stage one.
