  • Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) and Indoor Residual Spraying with insecticides (IRS) are the two primary vector control tools recommended by the World Health Organization for combatting malaria. While ITNs are globally preferred due to cost and labour factors, IRS still accounts for an estimated 13% of malaria cases averted in Africa where transmission is most intense, according to a 2016 publication by Bhatt et al. IRS is also a better option in particular situations, and sometimes the only option. Our expert panel provided insight into the decision-making regarding IRS, best practices, and the latest developments around the use of IRS.
