When you’re one of the most recorded guitarists in Nashville, you make sure you can cover all the bases. Watch this in-depth look at the amazing vintage guitars, rare amps, and massive pedalboard that inspires one of Nashville’s first-call session players.
Tom Bukovac aka "Uncle Larry" (‪@501chorusecho‬) has recorded over 600 albums with artist as diverse as Steven Tyler, Carrie Underwood, Don Henley, Willie Nelson, Blake Shelton, Stevie Nicks, and Sheryl Crow. PG’s John Bohlinger caught up with “Buk” in his natural habitat, Blackbird Studios, where he was just finishing day one of a two-day tracking session for the new Gary Allan album.

And to think 95% of it is stream of consciousness. Unbelievable.
There was a comment on one of Larry's first videos that I loved. "Every time Tom picks up a guitar a song comes out. It's never noodling". And it's so true.

No, you're not. It was the first thing I heard from Uncle Larry, and felt like he showed me a place somewhere in me that I knew was there but never surfaced. Jimi does the same with me. Tom is an absolute one-of-a-kind. He loaned me some gear for one of my first "big" sessions years ago (it wasn't that big, really😄) and I muddled through it as best I could. When I brought it all back I had a zillion questions and he very patiently went through a kind of "Nashville Session 101" with me. Here's the tuner to get. Here's how you dial in an amp to get a tone that's full, but cuts through. Here are the main guitars you really need for almost any session. Here's how you TUNE the guitar when the intonation is off (as it was for most of my guitars) but you need to use it- basically he said you find the chord or the area of the fretboard you're going to be using the most for that song or that track/part and tune the guitar to that. He was so excited to talk gear and walk me through it all!
But most of what I've learned from Tom has been from just watching him play up close. Everything he plays is a lesson in phrasing, note selection, and taste. His touch and dynamics are otherworldly.

@@NightpantsAt 11:50 he talks strings. So Yes, but... He also said he could probably play 9's and he didn't think strings made that much of a difference. He told the Billy Gibbons story who started playing 8's in 1971 because BB King looked at his guitar and asked him why he was working so hard.
Based on his explanation of not being able to easily bend the high E string, it's possible age had something to do with it. I've heard SRV moved to thinner springs as he got older.

One of my favorite things about him is, he never gets lazy in his playing. Doesn't matter if he's just teaching a lick, or clowning around, he always put 100% into one note, much less a phrase or song. Probably in my top 5 people in the world I would like to share a beer with and talk for a night. The people he knows and has played with is incredible. Reminds me of Steve Luckather. I'm from Eastlake Ohio and went to school with a Patricia Bukovac. Not sure what relation she would have been to Tom. I used to go to The Surfside Lounge quite a lot between 1973 when I got out of the Navy and 1978 when I left Ohio. It was a very local bar and I lived close to it. I remember Toms mom and she was always a really nice person. Tom would only have been 10 years old when I left Ohio so I doubt I heard him play at the bar and I do not remember him. Good to know a local boy made something of himself.

I like to think of Buk as the Keanu Reeves of guitar - he's just so chill it's incredible. Best thing about him is that while he's full of defined opinions and strong beliefs honed over many years, he's not out to convert anyone to his way of thinking. He couldn't care less what you use - as long as it works and sounds great to him and what he's looking for. And he immediately credits others for their ideas and hard work. Zero sense of artifice from this guy. The noisiest, most troll people online are exactly like small barky dogs - at their cores, they're all ultimately deeply insecure. Buk and people like him are at the exact opposite of the spectrum - totally secure in who he is and what he does and what he believes, but not afraid to admit when he's wrong and to change his mind. We should all aspire to be as chill as Buk - we'd all be a lot happier. :) Awesome work PG, John!

You absolutely nailed why he is so revered. Really a master, knowledgeable as hell, incredible player but like you said, would hear someone's rig with different, most likely cheaper pedals etc. and if it sounded good would tell them so. Down to earth and genuine--love hearing his playing and the insights. Pure gold!

Saw Tom with Trigger Hippy in Indy after they released their first album. Remember him playing a white Strat most of the night. Got a chance to talk to him after the show, not knowing any of his background, and he could not have been nicer. I asked him about the Strat, and he said he doesn't usually get too attached to any guitar, but that he could not part with that Strat. (Interesting to hear him say in the video he is probably a Gibson guy.) He left the band not long after that, so I feel very fortunate to have seen him live...with such a great band.

I have been checking in with Tom's "HomeSkoolin'" channel for a few months now, listened to some of the live show material out there and bought his "Plexi" CD, but I have sat and watched this entire video and I am mesmerized. I am coming to find Tom Bukovac as the greatest all-around guitarist alive today and possibly ever. Not only for his pure talent, tone, touch, phrasing and all of the professional guitar player stuff but watching his pure enthusiasm as he walks through everything from his guitars, amps and pedals. What an absolutely amazing player.
