I did a video about my life touring in bands. I almost didn’t release because I thought no one would connect with it. I figured my normal 300-600 views would still be worth it. I released it 2 weeks ago and it now at 11,300 views. I’m SHOCKED! I just took a walk, hit record on my iPhone and started talking. The comments were better than I could’ve imagined and I’m inspired to tell more of my story. Your over 40 video struck a nerve Kevin! My biggest take away was just be genuine and just put it out there, so thank you!

Being authentically real is so true! I have had an “interesting” life that I have told a few of my stories. Their collective response was “you need to tell people about this!”
Your research just opens the door to my new YT Over 40 channel tomorrow. I want to thank both you and Rob The Maritimer for the knowledge and advice to move forward.

Kevin, You being you is why I watch you!! I totally agree in connecting with others is a matter building trust and being true to yourself!! Otherwise, everyone can and will see right through you! I will be turning 70 at the end of this year, and always feared that no one would be interested in watching me (especially at my age) cook because my recipes are not contemporary or modern. To my surprise, my analytics shows that viewers 45 yrs and up are watching me! Thank you for helping me to realize that age is ONLY a number!! 🥰

Thank you so much, Kevin! Here’s a bit about my journey: I’m over 50 and have had a TH-cam channel for the past 7 years. I had nearly 1,000 subscribers, but the content was all over the place. I had a multi-niche channel, and it ended up hurting my videos-people who liked one topic wouldn’t necessarily watch another, so the algorithm didn’t give my videos the attention they deserved. Plus, my older videos were low quality, and honestly, I didn’t even agree with some of the things I’d said in them anymore. . . . So, I took a deep breath, took the channel offline, and just started fresh this past week. I feel so much more confident about creating higher-quality, more focused content now, and a lot of that is thanks to you! So, thank you! And fingers crossed for me-it’s a long road to get back to 1,000 subscribers, but I’m excited to be on the journey!

The authentic experience with a person who is just being themselves and making me feel welcome in their space is the main reason I watch so many channels with content that doesn't apply to me in any way. Something I think that should have been in that list as well is the sheer variety of content you can find on TH-cam. I have found so many fascinating subjects to experience and learn about since watching TH-cam.Many things I never imagined existed or would exist. TH-cam is a fascinating place to be.

Spending time looking for "a rock" to set my phone on is not the "best practice", going back to the car to get a tripod is way better. Good to hear! I recently renewed this old channel. I have shared some personal, authentic stories and they are really resonating with my ideal audience 😊 I'm only at 228 subs as of right now but I will have gained approximately 200 subs in 1 month which is amazing progress for me.
I've had another TH-cam channel for years which seemed to be dead in the water (until I turned it into a cat and kitten channel and decided to move my Vlogs here). It's still early days, but my videos are gaining more views than they did (mostly) on my other channel and the sub count continues to grow each day so I'm definitely headed in the right direction 🙂
Congrats Kevin for your recent TH-cam success! I still need to check out more of your videos (am only 3:44 into this one, but I can never wait until a video is finished to comment 😄) May your channel continue to blossom! Here's to being authentic! 🥂

    Very interesting information explained well!
It's nice to see a study that confirms some suspicions I've had for a while. I've been taking my time, figuring things out (myself included) and, occasionally, looking into advice for content creation. A lot of the advice I've seen seems to be geared towards different niches and different types of viewers than myself. I've seen advice that criticizes some of my favorite types of content to consume. I know I'm not the largest viewer demographic and the stuff I enjoy is not everyone's cup of tea, but I know I'm not the only one that likes what I like.
I try to take a lot of that kind of advice with a grain of salt, and transform the tips into my own style and situation. It can get discouraging when it seems like all of the advice is geared towards formulaic approaches to maximizing...views, subs, money, etc., instead of cultivating community and authenticity. I suspect that it's easier to focus on the quantifiable aspects for that type of advice, but it doesn't help someone understand how to focus on the more nebulous aspects of creativity and trusting themselves.
This video here is probably one of the best examples I've seen in regards to what can make the biggest difference, and it's based on listening to the consumer and not just any consumer, but the consumer that's really part of the creator's community.
Thanks for putting this together and spreading some positive advice and information around!

With touching on gear, reminds me of the John Candy movie the Great Outdoors. The scene when Dan Aykroyd is trying to light the fireplace with a $100 lighter and it's not lighting. John Candy chuckles and flicks an 89 cent BIC and tells him as he flicks it "(laugh) 89 cents".
Just like when I entered the CHRISTMAS world as a real bearded Santa for 5 years. I would laugh at all the LOOK AT ME I'M SANTA types. I would laugh and think to myself, OK you have a $3,000 suit, you went to the Santa Schools, You've got hundred$ in props, BUT can you connect with the kids like I can in my $100 suit?
My all time favorite Santa picture is a silhouette of me in suit, kneeling next to a little girl at a concert, setting in the middle of the dance floor with her dad. I'm kneeling and she's kneeling in front of me and reaching up to touch the suit or my beard, with the band up on stage playing Christmas music in the background. I saw that moment in my head and was hoping someone caught it on camera and they did.
The other moment, same concert venue, I was making my rounds mingling with all the people and as the band started playing Journey's Faithfully, I turned and said to the woman that was my elf for the night, I hope you're up for a dance. Empty dance floor, center of the whole concert, and we made our way to the center of it and started slow dancing. Had to have been a good decision because there was a lot of cameras flashing. Even influenced others to get up and dance too. They wanted me to stand by the door and act like a Walmart door greeter, and I improvised and made that night better for everybody and memorable.
It would appear that with TH-cam as well, the more things change, the more they stay the same. People missing the good ole days of story telling? Younger people wanting passed down knowledge of LIFE, that they can't get from fellow 20 something year olds that are just as curious as the person asking?

Agreed - the tech is overrated. When it comes to gear, the lighting and audio are far more important the camera and lens. Audio is simple with some relatively cheap mics. Lighting can be solved with daylight, but if that's not possible, that's where I'd put my money first. If I only knew then...
