I own a Bb, C, and Eb trumpet. I had a piccolo, but it was kinda sketch with intonation, so I sold it. The Eb is a custom with crazy good intonation, so even if I have to play in weird keys in lieu of picc. I really want a flugel, and a rotary C before I get another piccolo. In all honesty, I think id rather get a natural trumpet before another picc. (Yes, I took a semester of lessons on nat. Trumpet. I know how hard it is). Piccolo just sounds like a toy to me. I played one on a recital, and it went well. I think its good for oboe concertos, and baroque music, but anything new for piccolo just has an immature vibe to me. Like, a recorder, a literal $20 recorder sounds darker than a picc.

It's a good video for general use, and from an American point of view this is all very accurate. The use of trumpets and their cousins is very much depending on culture and geography though. If you look at the UK e.g. you will almost never ever see a C-trumpet in any symphonic orchestra, and the same goes for Russia. The sound of a C-trumpet is considered to bright I think. Or maybe they just hated the French. Also the cornet you are playing here will never ever be played in a British style Brassband, just because it's an American cornet which is almost identical to a trumpet and was designed by Vincent Bach in the early 1900's. Another point to mention is that neither Haydn nor Hummel ever wrote for the Eb trumpet. That instrument didn't exist yet at the time. In fact the hummel concerto is often played in E and on a C-trumpet instead. The original trumpets of that specific period didn't have valves but only holes with covers, just like a modern saxophone. Because these instrument are no longer in use a modern Eb-trumpet is generally used though. The flugelhorn is a special case. In America the use for it is just as you describe. But in Europe it has a different background. In Europe, especially in Belgium, France and Holland, flugelhorns are used in wind orchestras, called Fanfare orchestras, as was the plan by Adolphe Sax back in the 19th century. In this type of wind orchestra, comprised of all instruments Sax invented and improved, they take the roll that the clarinet has in other wind orchestras. Furthermore the Flugelhorn has a special place in the British style Brassband, where it has a special role more like the soprano part above the alto-horns.

The French are the reason for the cornet, not the c trumpet. German trumpeter Gustav Heim of the Boston Symphony circa early 1900’s is credited by William Vacchiano as establishing the C trumpet as the standard instrument in the American orchestra.

I think you should switch your mouthpiece on your flugel or practice a soft sound, cause you sound like a trumpet on a flugel

You could maybe cover some special forms of trumpets in a future video. Like a german Flugelhorn or a german/concert trumpet. U could also Cover smth like a bass trumpet or a ganschhorn

Transposition is scary and I write music for our band. All I know is this-
I’m a euphonium player, I play bass clef in concert pitch
Trumpets at our school - Bb is C
    Same with clarinets
Alto saxophones - Bb is Eb
Mellophones and etc - Bb is F
And I don’t use that at all I just press “Display Score in Concert Pitch” button because I’m not that guy

I have to play Romeo and Juliet In orchestra, written for trumpet in E 🤢 and the tutor who is a trombonist makes us play on Bb trumpets instead of c or d trumpet.
