After much reflection on yesterday’s event @escapealcatraztri, I remarked to my wife, “I am scared. I am afraid of failing you and so many others.”
The root of that fear is nature reminding me that she is in control as the waves slapped my face, breaking any sense of rhythm to my disconcerted breathing. My attempts of pushing myself only sent my heart rate soaring, leaving my head and vision in a blur, in danger of passing out if I didn’t rein in the effort. I had to find a way. Breast stroking, easing on the pedals in the unrelenting hills, the run slowed to a walk.
Sports highlight the best in humanity. Though it may seem individualistic and selfish at times, we are reminded that once the athlete toes the starting line, and for those who crosses it, it was an achievement of the group after all. This was your victory to share.
A million thanks to all who continue to join me in this journey. Share this post for those who may benefit from my message.
“If there’s a legacy I wish for my son to remember me by, it is that of courage. For when times were dark, his mother and I chose to overcome.
Once again I was humbled by nature. Once again, I was reminded that my body is breaking down, slowed by age and a terminal disease. The shortness of breath was unrelenting in all legs of the triathlon. Slowing down maybe a compromise, but the unrelenting movement is an act of defiance. For today is all we have. Today we celebrate the completion of what we started. And today, my village and I celebrate the finish line. My utmost gratitude to everyone who joined in this journey.
    My message is this:
I want to dispel the myth that cancer, including stage IV cancer, is synonymous with a death sentence. Like any chronic disease, it can be managed. The remedy to a terminal illness is simply to continue on living.
To my dear listener, whatever darkness lies over you, it is your window for your inner light to shine through. With courage and grace, be a force for good.”
