    Thank you. You're putting these great videos out many times faster than I can keep up with them. I've got a private playlist now of these. Perhaps I'll get through them and learn before I die! It's very useful info. ♡

    Thanks very much Kent. I've got no problems with the audio or understanding what you are trying to get across, it's all great and very generous of you to spend time putting these tutorials together for us. It's much appreciated all around the world. On a lighter note perhaps you could do a version of 'The Great Pretender' sometime complete with Lullabye of Birdland riffs ;-) Cling cling cling jazz !

      Kent Hewitt I hit the send button too soon. I suddenly remembered a jazz pianist I met in London in the 80’s -Al Haig -do you know of him ? I was thrilled to find his album “Invitation “ that I loaned to a neighbor and just as I was leaving her front porch the LP slid out of the sleeve through her decking ! Never to be retrieved again ! 🤣🤣. Anyway, I wanted to share that silly story with a good outcome because of TH-cam. Of course YOU are the best thing to hit TH-cam 😎. Thanks for getting back to me always -that helps me tremendously . 😊

    @Kent. For another video, any chance you could pick one simple melody line, like the G minor to A minor 11 D to D line on Have you Met Miss Jones? and just see how many times you can reharmonize the same line with different chords? I was just trying to experiment with different chords on that tune with a different chord for each note or every other note but I'm pretty sure you'd be able to come up with more ideas. Just set the camera on run and pick one melody line and try as many chord combos as possible? That would be a great help.

    I really appreciate these pieces with backing tracks. I had no idea there were so many on the internet. I ran across this fellow who teaching gypsy jazz guitar, its a bit of diversion and another genre of jazz swing I am attempting on piano . I suppose its not as complex as some of these other compositions but it is a lot fun to play. I am not sure if you have covered gypsy jazz for piano, there is pretty nice track for Troublant Bolero.
    With gypsy jazz like a lot of blues, my attention span is limited, before I get a migraine listening too long, its like candy the sugar buzz is short lived,

    This is great. Although your approach swung more like a ballad than funk

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right, take out the bass and drums and it sounds like a ballad. It's because the melody line is slow or elongated by the double time feel in the bass and drums. One measure of melody sounds like 2 measures of rhythm. You dig?. I would play this differently according to how the chord changes fit.

    What exactly are you using now for recording and what are you hoping to achieve? Maybe I can give some tips. I'm not an expert but who knows.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! All I use is a Canon powershot S-95 for both video and audio. No mics, no mixers, nothing else. Therefor I can't mix the backing tract to blend with the level of the piano, unless I use a digital keyboard. Then I can have both sources blended in the amp/ speaker. I tried that but didn't like the sound of the keyboard, compared to my acoustic. I tried turning up the level on the backing track but then it was so loud it was hurting my ears. Making these videos is not easy, and to get a good performance that I'm satisfied with, takes some work.

    • @TheHighlander71
      @TheHighlander71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess your main challenge is audio. The Powershot’s a nice camera for the picture, but no camera will give you the sound quality you want. Basically they have no pre-amp and will just increase the gain resulting in a lot of static and hiss.
      I would suggest to invest in an audio recorder. Personally I use a Zoom H4 which has a high quality stereo mic built-in, but will also allow up to two external mics to be attached. Say, one for your piano and one for your voice. It will produce a WAV file, which you can feed into software like Audacity (which is free) allowing you to balance and mix as you will. You’ll have full control over everything. Also, you’ll be able to pic the right mic for the job. The backing track (which I assume is an mp3) you can just mix in Audacity as an extra source.
      Naturally this will mean some investment in money and production time, but the gain in quality will be what you’re looking for.
      Hope this helps.
      I bought mine used off someone who'd used it to record live organ performances, but here's Zoom's website.

      Here's the website to Audacity

      Kent even a simple stereo mike recorder like the zoomH1/2/3/4/5/6 ones will probably give a much better sound. Simply find a good placement for it (eventually by using a simple mike stand) then you'll simply have to replace the camera audio track by the one from the recorder in your editing software. Many people have these sorts of devices (and many musicians) so you can probably find someone to lend you one for testing among your local acquaintances to try it before you buy :) And used H1/2/3 (older series) are probably very cheap anyway on ebay and such.

  • @marcosquito

    I simple love this song because of Chet Baker. Great job !! Main doubts are related to chords (in my opinion) because you never use straight and simple chords, starting to the first Dm7/9, each time time you use something different.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, Marcos. I generally reharmonize the chords, as long as there's no conflict with the bass notes. For the Dm9 chord I sometimes used a fourth voicing (D-G-C). I like to mix it up with different sounding voicings.
