Its the preconception of razors being dangerous that cause the cuts and scrapes early on, the apprehension and fear lead to jitters and inconsistent strokes. Cuts only really occur when your hand moves sideways, diagonally or if your hand is shaky. If you are using a straight razor, then the angle of the blade plays a role as well but with a safety razor you are locked into a suitable angle (hence having SAFETY in the name). As long as you are steady, there is no reason why even a beginner should have any issues with properly made safety razors. I shave with both a safety razor and a straight razor. On the former, I have never had a single cut. On the latter, only cuts I have had were when shaving against the grain the first few times.
Actually, after transitioning to this from the EJ-De89 I experience a lot less nicks, cuts and also a smoother shave. I find that this suits my sensitive skin and thick coarse beard perfectly with some feather blades, while with the edwin jagger needs more force and momentum to cut my thick whiskers and also more passes are needed and my skin gets irritated and accidentally nicked a lot more by it. But if it weren't for my super thick beard then I'd probably enjoy the Edwin jagger a lot more, the r41 one however is great for thick beard - I get super smooth shaves from it.
I'm a woman and shave my legs 2 - 3 times a week with the grande version. I only need 1 pass and love the Muhle blade. Couldn't be happier. I rarely cut myself. You just have to learn touch and angle.
This is one of my seven DE safety razors, and possibly my third favourite of them all - behind the Rockwell 6S and the Merkur Futur. I normally shave once every second or third day in a week. So, the aggressiveness level of the Muhle 41 is right up my alley on most days of the month. That said, I agree that it’s certainly not for newbies and novices to the DE shaving scene. I got this razor after nearly two years into wet shaving with safety razors. It’s a really stylish, efficient razor that is worth every dollar I paid for it ($70).
Mike Rose ..Cool. I don’t have a single vintage razor. That totally sucks! I’m going to have to make amends and finally get my first vintage razor. Most likely a Gillette. I’m also determined to try out shaving with a quality straight razor. It’s something I have wanted to do for years. I’m determined to get a straight razor the soonest next year. Meantime, the R41 Grande has become my clear favourite razor as of today.
I recently acquired a Parker Variant. But i’d recommend a Gillette Slim Adjustable, they’re a little bit cheaper than the fatboys one of my favorite razors
@@-JSLAK ...Very comparable. To me, it goes either way from time to time, i.e. sometimes I think the Futur is slightly more aggressive on a higher setting than the R41. But sometimes I think the R41 is more aggressive. I liked the Futur for a while, but I rarely use it now. The R41 is a constant favorite of mine in many different ways, aggression included.
It's funny that you mentioned the threaded portion breaking, as that's exactly what happened to my R41 a few weeks ago. I'd been waiting patiently for the replacement heads to be back in stock.
woops, this was my first razor when i started DE shaving never had any irritation issues though, i have been thinking about getting a more mild model as a daily shaver instead of one to shave every couple days
Thanks!! As we continue to do more hopefully they will be a good resource for people to link to when people have questions about a particular model. We really wanted to keep our reviews a bit more Safe-for-work than some of the other video bloggers / reviewers on youtube :)
You should tell Jerick he has to do the next one, and film his reaction! Seriously though, your customer service and staff especially, are fantastic and I think that's quite a big part of why so many people deal with you. It's certainly why I keep coming back......along with the unbeatable international shipping.
I love this razor ! I’ve had for over a month & use every day. No cuts and very little irritation ever. I prefer over my Gillette adjustable slim & Merkur 23C. Tried at least 10 different blades including Feathers. Gillette 7 o’clock yellows and Astra greens are my favorite. Thanks for a good video !
I just tried this razor and the shave was amazing, two pass bbs . I usually straight razor shave , and hone and strop, this compares to that close of a shave. I didn’t find it nearly as aggressive as I was told it was, I just think it’s very efficient. Is that makes sense.
The iKon "Tech" head -- or the Merkur Futur on its higher settings (4-5-6). both have larger gaps; although they do both have slightly lower cutting angle. Other option might be the "G" baseplate from Karve!
I’ve enjoyed the reviews and I’m perplexed by the ratings because there is no scale for each category. For example, when you rate this razor a 6 out of 10 there is no explanation for why it was rated lower for individual categories and overall rating or standards for each rating. Why is the razor a 6 out of 10. For example, the build quality is 9 out of 10 because the head might break if dropped or the razor blade ends are not completely enclosed in the razor head. Otherwise I’m enjoying the reviews.
If you like Open Combs the R-41 is for you. It's the benchmark the others are always compared to. I tend to get a better shave with an aggressive razor and mild blade, rather than a mild razor with an aggressive blade. I wouldn't say the Fatip V1 head is more aggressive,I'd give the nod to the R-41,close though. Just my 2 cents.
If you look at shaving as a chore, just get an electric razor ! If you want a really close nice shave, and have 10 minutes to spare , then you use the DE saftey razor and a brush/soap cup ! Shaving is a lost art, take your time, and enjoy the process !
Great review! Here's a question, though. I've been wet shaving for almost five years, but with the same Van Der Hagen razor I started with. I'm just now starting to branch out. Am I a beginner?
Same here in Europe with US products. A Pinaud Clubman AS that is 7$ in the US (177 ml bottle) retails in Europe for 17$... That's more than double the price. It's the same with Razorock products and I find that stupid considered they are made in Italy... I really hope that transatlantic treaty will be signed in the next 10 years :-)
Can R40 be used as a two piece razor without tge middle bar?? I use my razor like that and I'm looking for a new one that does that too. If soneone has it or knows please let me know. Thank you
I may be late, but still... no, you can't use the R41 as a two piece, the thread stops at one point and doesn't let you fully screw it unless you got the comb in between. Hope that helps!
We'd consider the iKon Tech (104) head to be a 10, and we'd consider the Merkur Futur to be easily adjusted to 9-10. Also, the Pre-2017 Fatip heads (Version 1) would be considered a "9" as well.
It's not an open comb head though... It's a straight bar that looks like an open comb :). But since even Muhle markets it as an open comb, I guess we can just let it slide :D
Why calling the R41 an open comb? It does have a safety bar, although unusual in design, and technically that puts it in the closed combs category. It is very aggressive, but there are other closed comb designs that are as aggressive or more (Ikon Tech for example).
We call it open comb, because Muhle refers to it as open comb. But, yes, you are correct, there are mild OC razors (Merkur 41C, Parker 24C/26C, etc), and Aggressive OC razors (R41) just like there are mild and aggressive straight bar razors.
I started wet shaving with an EJ DE89, then when the bolt snapped inside the handle I went to a shavette. I've read that shavettes are the most aggressive shaving implement you can use. Would the R41 be less aggressive?
Well, yes, it will be less aggressive, because there is in fact a safety bar here (even if they are just these teeth). That said, theres at least *some* projection for your face :D
It is a pitty that this precise shaving instrument is such overpriced over there in the US. I purchased my first one some months ago by taking advantage of a discount promotion for only 28 €. Now the stainless steel version is on it's way to me, because that R41 has become my daily driver, giving me every day a BBS.
As for pricing mate don't complain too much as prices here is Australia are way above the prices you have to pay. In any case they are bound to be more expensive because of shipping, import duties and taxes - again try buying shaving gear out here in OZ!!
4:00 - 5.11, the American tactical apparel company, sells the Stryke pant for 70$ in the US and for 90€ in Europe. Unfortunately, crap like this happens, you just gotta live with it.
Awesome explanation of how the aggressiveness is different.
Its the preconception of razors being dangerous that cause the cuts and scrapes early on, the apprehension and fear lead to jitters and inconsistent strokes. Got the R 41 last month love it have to show respect while using it best shave I ever got .
The R41 heads fit Edwin Jagger DE89LBL handles and Maggard Razors sells just the razor heads.
I bought this razor in Europe for 35$. Very good shaving, no scratches. Handle little slippery. I give it 8/10 for the handle and loading system.

Great review. R41 + Feather all you need for a BBS
Fantastic review Brad, really great to see the quality of your videos but I'd expect no less. They are far and away the best of their type on TH-cam.

Have you tried gillette nacet? Same sharpness as feather but last longer and more consistent. I get 3 passes. Some get 5. Its buttery smooth.
Got the stainless version GS, unreal piece of kit. Shave my head with it after using electric clippers for about ten years.

PRetty great thus far !
Best reviews in the entire shaving industry! 💯💯💯
Why did you stop putting out reviews?
What will you recomend that is slightly more aggressive/efficent than the muhle rocca? Say 15-20% more aggressive/efficent.
So r41 grande is the taller one

Which safety razor do you think should get 10/10 on aggressiveness

do you think he's fitting a harder handle?
Awesome review, I love my Muhle R41

And finally now in stainless steel. It quicly became my favourite razor.
I'm using it with a Maggard MR 11 handle and it feels great because I have a tough and thick beard !
Still debating to buy a Muhle because of cost
Yeah, it's hard to justify. We do sell the R41 heads for $25.95 @ Maggard Razors. might help you make a decision ;)
Get a Fatip instead. It’s a nicer shave IMO
Great review! Here's a question, though. I've been wet shaving for almost five years, but with the same Van Der Hagen razor I started with. I'm just now starting to branch out. Am I a beginner?

The early Fatip heads were brutal lol; but the Futur, when backed out past the number stop--is easily adjustable to 11 or 12 imho!!!
Great! Thanks for this review. What aggressiveness of V3A Maggard head by your scale? Wants more reviews of Maggard's products.
sterh sterh we would give the V3a about a 6/10!
