    This latest video is much longer than usual being a bit of story-telling - it should appeal to those interested in watching freight trains being shunted. I hope viewers will agree. This video is also the very 1st one on this channel available in 4K. The 5Gig took a long time to upload on my slow internet connection, but I deemed the footage worthwhile for better quality!

    Interesting video you made for us. I was thinking the two diesels would run back light to Bellville, but they've joined forces when I least expected it. NICE ONE, BIIG LIKE!!!!!!

      Thanks, Shurwin. Yes, I very much got surprised by this too - was already starting to move to intercept the train at Wintervogel level crossing when I saw the headlight of the Malmesbury returning train. If they didn't join the locomotives, the last train would have to wait, possibly for up to an hour, for the first train to clear the track between Kalbaskraal and Kraaifontein.

    Thanks pic, great video. Really enjoyed all the shunting. See the ammonia tank could do with some wheel flaps as the dirty liquids on the tracks sprays up on the tank ends.

    Excellent video, it's even better when watching it on tv. Thank you for the Ultra HD upload. Where the crew okay with you filming their every move? They seemed friendly enough and what happened to those tracks at 8:16 they are bent horribly out shape, is it due to the heat or lack of maintenance?. I also noticed some of ballast wagons are marked 'AYJ' and the rest are 'Nay'.

    • @RAILFANinSOUTHAFRICA
      @RAILFANinSOUTHAFRICA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments Marval, (1) I am happy to report that the crew accepted me and did not seem to be uncomfortable with my presence. My interest is on the shunting itself and the process. There's a lot the crew has to know and do in order to do safe shunting. At Kalbaskraal after the shunting, the man remarked jokingly that I now must have enough pictures, on which I said "Yes, for today!" upon which both shunters laughed. Over the years some of the shunter staff have become used to me line-siding. (2) I do not have the full background about the bent rails at Kalbaskraal, Transnet might have damaged their infrastructure intentionally themselves a few years ago after grain wagons derailed in that area (I ll check if I can find a image or two), maybe because of the old wooden sleepers under all of the tracks in the old yard - the main line to Saldanha (for the coal trains that now do not run anymore) has modern cement sleepers. (3) Yes the ballast wagons have confusing type numbers. Of the 20 wagons, 17 were type NAY, 1 was a AY, and the two at the end were AYJ's. There are subtle design variations between these types, causing different max load capacities.

      Hi Tokelo, Sorry I understand your problem: May I suggest you only watch one or two parts of the upload:
      1:23 | MELLISH siding: The train stops here to deliver the AMMONIA tanker; The ammonia from the SASOL plant is used to treat cattle fodder.
      7:59 | KALBASKRAAL: In the old days of steam this was a very busy junction with a Steam loco shed. All gone now. Our train is to shunt the 20 Ballast wagons here.

    What's around the exhausts on the U15C's? They have a big sort of built up box like structure around them I don't recall seeing on others outside of SA. :)

      An externally visible modification which was done during major overhauls is the addition of a saddle hood astride the long hump of the Class 35-000. By 2013 this modification had been done on a large number of Class 35-000 units, but no similar modification was done on any Class 35-400. (source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_African_Class_35-000)
