Barn Swallow Babies - Day 5

The Baby Barn Swallows hatched (June 20 2017)! Today is June 24nd(Day 5). We have been watching the nest since spring, waiting for this day. There were 2 eggs in the nest on May 29.
The preferred habitat of the barn swallow is open country with low vegetation, such as pasture, meadows and farmland, preferably with nearby water. This swallow avoids heavily wooded or precipitous areas and densely built-up locations. The presence of accessible open structures such as barns, stables, or culverts to provide nesting sites, and exposed locations such as wires, roof ridges or bare branches for perching, are also important in the bird's selection of its breeding range.

A barn swallow nest in our garage fell down. I put it together and placed it on a shelf. The parents seemed lost and the little ones hunkered down and were quiet. Then I didn't see the parents for a while, so I tried to feed the fledglins, but they were too stressed out and just huddled together with their heads hidden.
So I tried a trick. I played your video and at about 2:05, like magic, their little gaping mouths stuck out.
I have no problem feeding them. Play your video and have a fly, or a horsefly, etc. and feed. No stress, they don't mind me and my finger.
Wonderful. I get tears in my eyes seeing them react to your bird.

I had swallows build a nest atop my anchor nestled under bow pulpit. They were very well protected and have returned the last 3 years.

The one’s who are born into that nest come the next year back to that nest to have little one’s themselves. Beautiful.

so cute, we used to have swallows nesting on my parents farm, there are hardly any swallows left now here because all the farm house n stable areas nowadays are "cleaned" up and the parent swallows can no longer find enough barn flies and insects to feed ...

Found two baby swallows its two other siblings were dead from being pecked by a predator bird I believe a crow since the holes were big

Oh my...that was a spider, the 1st meal ..look at those..too many legs sticking out...*shudders*.
I love swallows. I used to see them every summer at my grandparents house in the country side; they would always return to their nest which they had on the endge of the roof.

There's also tree swallows which live above swamps or lakes idk either one I believe it's better to look it up I'm only 15 and now a single mother of two barn swallow baby's since the nest fell down from a predator bird attacking the nest but their in safe hands my grandma will make sure of it if it comes down to a brawl with a big bird hungry for baby bird 😂

I don't think you're supposed to do anything other than not to bother them. They get everything done by themselves, no help is required.

One of mine crawled out of the nest above my front doorframe at about this age; I didn't know I could just pop it back in there until it was too late. Later 2 of the 3 remaining also fell out and we just stuck them back in; they were fine. The parent couple is on their second brood now!
