My step dad died suddenly in 2020 from a brain aneurysm and his mom had passed away from the same thing. One by one his family members started getting tested (AGAINST medical advice from some of their doctors) and the majority of them have the same issue and the doctors doing the tests have told them that the testing has saved their lives. Do what’s best for you!

I’m so sorry that happened at the dr’s Rachelle- It’s a serious issue that women *especially younger women* aren’t taken seriously in the medical community. Our concerns are so often brushed off, it’s incredibly frustrating and dejecting. But I’m honestly inspired by your attitude to not let that bad experience stop you, and just figuring it out on your own! Let us know how those at home tests go 💗

How precious is it that Asher was telling Faye he wants to hold her hand and how he was trying to put her pacifier in her mouth and she was smiling at him. I love how you're a go-getter. Good for you looking into figuring out a way to be able to get what you need.

Don't let anyone especially a doctor make you feel silly or dismissed for your concerns. You are an advocate for yourself. No one will stand up better for you, than you! You are just in your concerns and I hope you are able to get the answers so you can continue to be proactive with your health.

When I first started having joint issues my doctor sent me to a local rheumatologist. When I got to his office I literally talk to him for less than a minute and he barely looked at my file and told me there was nothing wrong with me I was just fat and needed to lose weight. When I left I called my family doctor crying he was so upset that he refused to send me back to that rheumatologist and sent me to a different one that he did extensive research on. Come to find out I have an autoimmune disease. Some doctors are just not willing to listen and just don’t care. I’m glad you looked into another option. I don’t understand why a doctor wouldn’t want to run these test especially with your family history.

I know how you feel. I had hpv 10 years ago and I’ve had abnormal Pap smears since then. And now I’m missing periods and having symptoms of ovarian cancer. But my doctor is finally testing me for ovarian cancer or to see if I will have cancer later on. I wish they would just listen to their patients. You know your body better than they do.

Little side note for having no brown apples or potatoes! For the apples, when you cut them, put them in a bowl of water after with a tiny bit of lemon juice and they won't brown afterwards! For potatoes, essentially same thing but no lemon juice, just in water let them sit for a little while cutting and they won't brown 😊
I'm sorry to hear about the doctor though, super unhelpful. 😭❤

I am so sorry to hear about your experience at your doctor's appointment. I have been working as a cardiac nurse for over 6 years now. My suggestions regarding LP(a) -- this is a lab test that indicates risk factor for a cardiac event. If this lab test comes back elevated the main course of treatment is life style and starting a medication to lower cholesterol. My best advise is to have an appointment with a cardiologist to review your lab results, and they may even order more blood work and even testing. Once the cardiologist has all information he may refer you to a genetic MD. This blood work is newish to cardiology, but there has been lots of research on how to manage. So in short most cardiologist have enough information on how to manage/treat an elevated LPa, but they may encourage genetic MD to get involved. I hope this helps.

I had all these genetic testings done through my OBGYN and it WAS all covered by my insurance because my family has a very strong history of female cancers. She ordered a full panel for me and it was simple. HOWEVER.... That being said.... I also got a lot of these results in my 23 and Me ancestry and health report! You need to buy the health one but they give you all kinds of genetic info, including BRCA.

It's not that uncommon. I worked in a clinical laboratory for years and this is most definitely a test doctors do.i ran this test daily. You do need a script for get tests done unless you're going to a health fare but even then those tests are limited and it's because people like to self diagnose . I would look for another doctor honestly. That attitude is a problem.

The kids are so sweet and adorable with Faye ❤🥰
Also, it took me four years to get diagnosed with fibromyalgia (that runs in my family and I obviously had it) my doctor didn’t believe in fibro so I had to go to a different doctor to get a referral to a rheumatologist that did a physical exam and listened to my symptoms and told me “you have obvious fibromyalgia” and I was like *SEE I KNEW IT*
I ended up finding out this year that I have the MTHFR gene mutation so now I have to get further testing to figure out what type because one is worse than the other. I’m trying to get my family to get tested.

I am SO sorry that happened! It is so disheartening to hear and as a public health professional, it angers me because prevention is the key to good health and should be seen as that. Glad you could find an at home test to test you for it. I will say that a lot of at-home tests aren't very reliable in giving a true positive or a true negative when it comes looking for a specific gene so I would get a second opinion from a doctor/cardiologist if possible :)

Yes, there are kits for BRCA testing! Also, you can talk to your OB/GYN about it, that's how I got mine done. However, insurance only automatically covers it if you meet certain family/ personal history criteria. You can appeal to try to have your insurance cover it, if you want to go that route. I've heard there are also sometimes events where you can get BRCA gene testing done in October.

I'm so sorry you had such a negative experience with that doctor - he had no right to treat you the way he did and given that there is such a prevalent history in your family of cardiovascular issues leading to heart attacks and strokes, a simple blood test to check if you have that gene is 100% the right thing for you to do! I'm so glad you were able to find an at home test kit for you to find out if you do have the gene. I'm praying you don't but I personally think you're doing the right thing being proactive with your health and staying ahead of things.
I haven't done it yet but I know CircleDNA is a kit you can get that checks SO many different genes and if you're at a higher risk for developing certain cancers and a bunch of other health issues. It's something I plan on doing in the near future and definitely before I start a family of my own.
I've honestly found that, as a woman, I've been treated MUCH differently by doctors when I try to be proactive about my health and any potential future health issues. I have several chronic diseases already, so it's important for me to stay on top of my health but when I approach my doctor about investigating further into health issues, I'm constantly dismissed, told I'm comfortable in a "sick" role and reluctant to move out of it and treated as though I don't know my own body. So I understand how you felt when that doctor dismissed your request to be tested for that gene, I don't wish that feeling on anyone. But you are NOT dumb. It's a good thing to know and you voiced incredibly valid reasons for getting this test.
Love, hugs and light to you and your family from Canada ❤️❤️❤️

I’ve had the BRCA test done. Usually you need to have breast cancer in you family a mother, sister, etc. There is a special lab in California that your blood is sent to for analysis. Insurance usually pays for this. Your OB can order this test. There is not a kit for this test. I had breast cancer and my oncologist ordered this test. You meet with a geneticist first then they do the blood draw. Hope that helps.

I have the Brca2 gene and have a strong history of breast cancer in my family. I had a full hysterectomy and a double mastectomy before I was 35. I did whatever I had to do to prevent getting cancer since I wanted to be around for my kids. In Canada once someone in your family has cancer and gets tested for the gene and they are positive the doctors suggest people in the family get tested. I'm so sorry the doctor didnt take you seriously. Push for testing and answers. It is your body not theres. Knowledge is everything . ❤

My friend's large family had a hx of strokes. After the strokes they were finding the aneurysm in the same area of their brains was the problem. Made them wonder could this be hereditary ( they had diff drs). So her Dr told here this could not be genetic. She perservered and insisted on being tested, yep same area had a defect, could cause problems. The surgeon clipped the area ( potential aneurysm) and she is now on strict blood pressure control and monitoring and has weight lifting restrictions. Previously being healthy she would be up shingling their roof or remodeling the house, so has had to cut back some on these activities. Now the Dr's are admitting it does seem to be a hereditary trait to have the potential problem with the blood vessels in their family.
    1) Drs are just people, some can be jerks.
    2) Trust your own intuition for yourself and your kids.
    3) Talk to a geneticist before giving up on this.
Remember you are your own best advocate. Retired RN/BSN, 35 yrs hospital experience.

The intro still makes me so happy😍
It’s seriously so discouraging when DRs are so heartless sometimes but im glad you didn’t let the DRs make you change your mind and you found an alternative way to get it all checked out ❤
Praying everything will come out good!

I did testing through invitae, we had genetic conditions and I paid only 350 without insurance. It was recommended by drs and a simple saliva test.

Earlier this year my mom was diagnosed with a genetic condition called HHT, it’s a blood disorder and it’s real scary she’s fine but because it can be passed down my brother and I both had to get tested. I had a really hard time getting a referral/order to get this test done even though the genetic department my mother was working with which was part of the Cleveland clinic said that their clinic covered all of the charges and costs for this genetic testing they just needed my primary care doctor to order the test. I wonder if talking to the doctor your mom‘s been working with where your aunt would be able to give you some guidance in where to get this testing done or if they have some kind of similar program where that they know of a geneticist or genetic testing site that their team works with I could help you along

Any dr can order a blood test and then if test requires a geneticist then you can be referred. Plus NEVER talk to front desk about studies, tests, etc. ask to leave a message for nurse to call you back to discuss the test.

I'm so sorry your doctor's appointment was so disappointing. I am glad you figured the testing out yourself. Remember you know your body better than any doctor.

I can’t speak to the heart issue but I had my BRCA test done though my OB. I have terrible insurance and it was covered 100%.

Can you get a referal to a cardiologist and the cardiologist request the test? The cardiologist would be more familiar with the genetic condition and understand why it needs to be tested.

It can be hard to ask the doctor and the doctor just thinks it’s nothing. It’s also a pain in the butt to try to get a new doctor that will actually care.
It’s rare to find ones that do. What I dislike is looking for one no matter, dentist, doctor, OB etc having to call and ask if they take insurance or new patients can be stressful.
I remember this happened to me, I hated that female doctor who gave me attitude for getting my spin checked after that I just never looked for a doctor.

That is absolutely terrible that you were sent there after them telling you that they did them tests there, i would be raging if that happened to me tbh. I don’t know how you must be feeling right now 😮I have watched you for many years now and i am so happy for you that you have came so far and got children that you have always wanted. Just be positive and keep your chin up. Lots of love from Morgan xxx❤

My moms sisters all passed away in their 60's with heart problems as well as their mother. I also have heart disease and I asked cardio Dr about my girl having same. Cardio Dr said really nothing you can do with info /testing. Its good to know but nothing can be done when your young. He said live healthy and will treat when needed. I remember him saying what would I do with results..nothing really
