This turned my stomach. I truly hope they get their act in gear, and clean this up. If this is an issue on other ships, I hope they are on top of those, too.
Don, I hope things went well at the doc's. We went on the Vista for one cruise a while back. I was trying to eat healthy so I was eating lots of salads and fresh veggies. On the second day I was feeling bad and suffering from rashes and swelling of my face, hands and feet as well as having massive itching spells. I went to the sick bay and was diagnosed with sun allergy and told to stay out of the sun by the ships doctor. I went to my doctor as soon as we got home. The first thing he asked me was, "My God, what have you been eating? When I told him about the cruise and the salads, he said that was the problem. Apparently, the ships flood the fresh vegetable storage areas with sulphate gas once they are at sea to prevent browning of the vegetables. And, I was apparently allergic to sulphate. A course of steroids fixed me. We haven't been on a cruise since because we don't have any control of the food.
I still love Carnival. I have never experienced a bad cruise with them. I like them and Royal Caribbean. I think that older ships like this one and the Majesty of the Seas just need to be retired. This is unacceptable.
Carnival Breeze got the same score in 2017. That's a very new ship...... It's all about doing the job to maintain standards whether mechanical, procedural or training.
Like you I have never had a cruise (9 so far) on Carnival that was not great. But as I get older I notice I find it getting easier to get sick/heal. Things that never bothered me in my 40's are starting to affect me now I am in my 60's. I need details like this about different ships to decide which ships not to sail on.
How can you not blame Carnival? They need to be monitoring their ships to make sure they meet quality levels in terms of safety, cleanliness, service, etc.
Carnival Cruise Line - We treat seasickness and health code violations the same... ignore it. 🤮 Problem was they finally got caught! No telling how long it would have continued, if the CDC hadn't exposed it.
I was on the Emerald Princess last month I saw a fly on the cold meat selection one of the cooks saw it and immediately lifted every tray and binned the lot
Just got done with a 4 trip on The Inspiration. I was fortunate to have a very special kitchen Tour. The first thing i had to do was wash my hands when i entered. I was walked around and than given a vip tasting of the menu for the night. Everything was very fresh and flavorful. Chef Michael and his crew are very talented. I have many years in the restaurant industry and was happy with what i saw. I did not see the cold or frozen storage. But all prep areas and cooking areas were spotless and functioning well.
This was not the only ship or company to fail inspection this year. There is a website where you can check. Royal Caribbean was on the fail list as well.
Jack Mortimer sweet. Glad I booked a Disney Cruise. Two of their four ships scored 100, including one I’ll be on in a couple of months. Disney all the way!
I agree! ... fully on management ... I'll wager employees do not get much training for kitchen staff placement, Saving clean dishes and cutlery etc, could be common in a family household kitchen, anywhere water is scarce.
The buck absolutely stops with Carnival Corporate. If they inspected operations on their ships themselves before the health inspectors got there, they could have seen and dealt with the staff and all the problems. Blaming the crew alone is unfair to all the other cruise lines that actively insure their ships passed their inspection. Do better Carnival

Maintainance + prevention are necessary when dealing with mechanical systems....esp in these days of computers. Ppl forget that ANYTHING CAN BREAK OR START SHOWING AGE/WEAR/READY TO BREAK DOWN!
OMG! Don, thank you for posting this. We were on Carnival Horizon last week and saw the Fantasy when we were docked in Cozumel. After cruising RCI, NCL, and Carnival in the last year and a half, I think it is safe to say that we won’t cruise Carnival again. The Horizon itself was a great ship and we never encountered rude staff. Our room steward and wait/bar staff were also great! That being said, you do absolutely get what you pay for. We only did the Carnival trip because it was a group cruise with friends and we were keeping an open mind. Our problem was more with the huge concentration of rude and inconsiderate cruisers on board. This may or may not be a function of the low cost to cruise on Carnival. We didn’t have the same experience on our past cruises with NCL or RCI.
I wrote with carnival on facebook. This is what they replied. Hi Steven, The results for Fantasy are not reflective of our robust standards and dedicated commitment to our guests’ health and safety. We have already taken corrective action, added additional staff and asked USPH for a re-inspection as soon as possible, with every expectation that we will exceed USPH standards. - Mischelle

My husband and I have been on 3 carnival cruises and loved them all. We kept saying how surprised we were about how clean everything seemed to be. Maybe it’s different from ship to ship. Going again in November🙂
Carnival is its own worst enemy. Hotel manager or head chef or whomever is responsible needs to be fired/demoted and replaced. As always, thank you for the video, Don!
A lot worse goes on in the restaurant industry. Scraping off mold, refrigerators not cold enough, compressors in fridge units dripping onto uncovered food, termites, roaches, mice crap, etc, etc. One owner would pull uneaten pickles and olives off of dirty plates and return them to the cold table. 😳 20 years experience and I saw it all!

If they can’t do it then they should sell off some ships and downgrade. I have not cruised with Carnival and never will. Between their ships constantly breaking down, diseases running rampant and running into the piers/docks/other ships I feel it’s not worth the cheap Walmart prices. I currently have a cruise booked through Disney. It’s double the cost, but they’re never in the spotlight for anything but good news. Disney or bust. Maybe Holland America too. They weren’t bad.
I had heard they failed, but had not heard the details. I’m glad you commented on the Royal Princess. Makes me feel a little better about going on my cruise.
Sorry to say that every kitchen can have a bad nught. I do not know the real facts of the report. Often things are missing or being hyped up for whatever reason. Carnival has a lot of good people that do a great job all year long. I have been home 1 day and cant wait to get back on a Carnival cruise ship.
Just when i think i put the last nail in the coffin of carnival ever being an option for me to cruise on. Nope, lets make sure that coffin is REALLY sealed shut.
With all these issues I’m surprised it even scored 77😱 When you said 85 was the benchmark and how badly this ship I thought it’d be something in like the 30s or 40s 😂
Several other ships failed in the month of July 2019 as well. Including a Royal Caribbean ship and also one from MSC. The Fantasy averages in the mid to upper 90's usually. It is all on the CDC web site. You can see all the scores for all the different lines as well as their past scores.
Our Family Adventures Called Life I’d argue that carnival has gained sort of a reputation for unpleasant experiences. BUT most of their newer ships don’t have those issues, Just like Royal Carribean I bet anything if a ship did fail inspection it was a older ship!
it's the people running the ship and not carnival Corp only goes so far for every Msc or Celebrity story there's five or six carnival mishaps. Its absolutely a top management problem. Don't think I will cruise with them.
It just keeps going from bad to worse to whatever is lower than that. GROSS!!! Thanks Don for this important, everyone should watch this video. We sailed once on a 4 day Carnival cruise and Once was enough for us. Now, Never, Ever.
I couldn't agree with you any more Don. As a manager of a fresh produce department in a major supermarket chain. We are constantly checked and audited. To which I preform extremely well in. This sounds like a major breakdown of procedures. The managers of those departments of the ship need to be looked at. The team is only going to be as good as the example set by the team leaders. Not good.
We are going on an Alaskan cruise on the Holland American Eurodam is a couple of weeks. Because of this story I checked the Eurodam's inspections and according to the Holland America web site the Eurodam has received 100 out of 100 for their last 13 inspections. This is good information..
The whole kitchen staff needs to go through a sanitation certification training for restaurants as that kind of garbage would get a land based restaurant shut down by city or county health departments faster than you can drop a utensil on the floor and put it back.
I do not cruise Carnival but when I go to the buffet I never take the top plate in a stack and always give it a look to make sure it was washed completely.
I have heard that some restaurants do that too with the cutlery. So what I do is even if I don’t use a spoon or fork or knife, I purposely put them in my empty soda cup and put a ton of garbage that I’m not using into that cup to make sure that everything is washed
Carnival is called the walmart of cruise lines for a reason. I've been on two different Carnival ships. I'll NEVER cruise again with them in life. Nasty ships, poor service from the room attendant, kids running loose and Carnival looking the other way.... A.C. didn't work. Had to switch rooms. Our room was nasty too. I always clean before we use it however, we found hair, dust, dirty walls and it was stinky.
Sorry to hear, Carnival's ship from my closest home port, hasn't improved much since my last cruise. There was brown water from the shower and washroom faucet on Carnival Holiday twelve years before.
I was in the middle of lunch when I saw my notification that you had a new video up, so immediately I clicked on it & it was this video. Bye-bye lunch, Lost my appetite🤢
We have been on 5 cruises with carnival in last 2 year's. The fantasy ship was our last ship we went on back in January and we weren't impressed with the fantasy. Ship felt old. All the other ships were in very good condition. We always seen staff working 24-7 cleaning
If half of this stuff is true, and I bet it is, then Carnival has more than a good bit of contempt for its passengers, and Carnival is laughing all the way to the bank.
Congratulations on surpassing 50k subscribers, Don! Love your content and the honesty with which it is presented! My family's first cruise is coming up in about 5 days!
My first cruise 3 years ago was on a carnival ship. The food was not good at all. The dining room was dirty. That ship has been revamped since but it did not leave a very good impression on me. Everyone always raved about the food on a cruise, but did not experience that with my first cruise, I have since.
No Fantasy for me! I agree with you especially when it pertains to the food. Your presentation made me laugh because I DO know how you feel about food cleanliness.
Number one, EVERYBODY wants a clean food and a good appearance. one time the cutlery that I was about to use had a crust on the fork so I got another set and wiped it with a Lysol sanitizing wipe which I carry in my handbag all the time. this was about a year ago and since then every time I wiped the utensils before I use them even if they "look" clean, and now I do that at any restaurant even on land. thanks for sharing.
When I worked as a waitress years ago, we were told to keep dinner rolls that customers didn't eat, so they could be served to other unsuspecting customers. If there was a bit of food or gravy on them, we were told to use our fingernails to scrape it off. I cannot begin to imagine all the 'shortcuts' that are taken in cruise ship kitchens.
Majesty of the seas has had a revamp, and even then still was much better than Carnival. I would pick Majesty over any Carnival ship. I understand what you’re saying though. Majesty of the seas before the revamp was the bottom of Royal Caribbean. Obviously there’s no comparison once a person has been on RC Oasis Class Ships.
The age of the ship should not matter. It is up to the crew to keep it up to standard in all areas. I do agree that the very old ships need to be taken out of service. Also the Captain is ultimately responsible for all areas of the ship.
I was on Majesty of the Seas two years ago. It does not compare to any other Royal Caribbean ship. I do have to say the food was better than Norwegian.
OMG! I’m with you Don, I don’t think I’ll ever sail on that ship!! That staff is letting some very bad things go down. Definitely some better management and crew training should be mandatory!
That is what cruisers pay for, the big bucks for is for a good time and SAFETY in all areas! Wow. Not a good thing. I liked the video but not what happened.
There was a Carnival ship docked next to our ship on a recent cruise. It looked liked it was on the way to the scrap yard. The exterior was dirty and rusted. It's blue and red paint was faded. I couldn't imagine paying for a cruise, arriving at the terminal, and seeing that I had to ride in what looked like a filthy bath tub.
With the recent dumping scandal and Carnival being in the news for stuff like this all the time, when are the shareholders going to hold the CEO responsible
Thankfully for my First Cruise, I am traveling on the Royal Princess and not on a Carnival Ship, Carnival might be owning many other Cruise lines by they themselves don't have their act together. Excellent Video Don. 😫
@@kays749 Thanks Kay, I plan to document my trip, first I do a Land portion for 9 days then arrive in Whittiker for my cruise back to Vancouver. I can't say which part is going to be my highlight because Alaska is full of excitement around every corner. 😃
It sounds to me that these sanitation break downs were do to corner cutting by management. Too, too many to be certain individuals, this is systematic.
Here is a tip I have used for years at buffets and most places. Plates often look clean but they not. Assuming your hands are clean grab a plate and just run your hand over it. It's your plate. If you feel anything that isn't smooth odds are it's left over food. If your really not sure it will flake off if you rub it. If dirty, give it to the staff or set it aside. Buy some hand wipes, when you sit down wipe your hands, when done wipe the table down. You could even wipe the silver wear if your not sure. Have fun.
I always used to get laughed at for my OCD regarding cleanliness! I remember as a kid I used to rub all my cutlery before I would use it. People used to laugh at me! Now I know I am right to be paranoid. Gross!
I agree it must be the management of the ship. Sailed on the Carnival Magic for the first time this year, and they were FASTIDIOUS about cleanliness. Now I'm wondering if I should google for those scores, lol.
Hi Don, this story inspired me to look up the CDC web site where they publish these reports. While I did not go through every last ship nor all of the details on those reports, what I did find in the sampling I took is that the cruise industry, in general, is getting really good marks from CDC. Those ships I looked at which had a failing grade over the years always brought up their score, sometimes dramatically on their next inspection. Some of the dings that some ships got were things like a messy coffee station in one of the engineering areas. While I understand that an area like that is not passenger facing, I agree that it should be clean like everywhere else. Oh, one ding that I chuckled at concerned a fingerprint on a clean knife, which was immediately rushed off to be re-cleaned. Thanks for this story bringing our attention to this topic.
This turned my stomach. I truly hope they get their act in gear, and clean this up. If this is an issue on other ships, I hope they are on top of those, too.
Was considering going on the Fantasy on my next cruise. Changed my mind after this video.
Slushman2006 we went on the Fantasy last summer and we had a wonderful time. It’s a smaller boat, but everything on it was great.

Laura F absolutely it falls directly on carnival. They create the culture where this is acceptable. No doubt the crew is understaffed and over worked.
Laura F - a good organization would conduct regular inspections of itself. What’s it say when they don’t
Love the passion you have for this Don, just one more reason to skip Carnival for my next cruise adventure.

Better yet, just sell it to one of those "free" weekend cruise to the Bahamas lines.
Would’ve never considered the fantasy even before this. Not knocking carnival but their old ships look awful. This inspection confirms it
it's the people running the ship and not carnival Corp only goes so far for every Msc or Celebrity story there's five or six carnival mishaps.
That was very enlightened about Carnival cruise lines. Never have been on one, never will.
Thank you, Don. You just made my future cruise planning a little easier.
I was going to book a cruise on the ship in January but not now lol thanks for the info
The whole kitchen staff needs to go through a sanitation certification training for restaurants as that kind of garbage would get a land based restaurant shut down by city or county health departments faster than you can drop a utensil on the floor and put it back.
Another vantastic video, Don :) This is news we need to hear, truth.
I do not cruise Carnival but when I go to the buffet I never take the top plate in a stack and always give it a look to make sure it was washed completely.
I am getting really concerned about Carnival. Makes me question if I should continue to sail with them.
Annie Coffin I’m the same as you.😔
I love Norwegian Cruise Lines. I like the Freestyle cruising. Carnival needs some serious revamping.
P.S. this could be the one of the reasons I have not cruised with Carnival in over 15 years!!!
C Banks same here, I would never cruise on Carnival again, same for Norwegian, the food was disgusting on the Jade last year.
@@celiamartin2907 I loved each of these cruise lines and they all had great food: Azamara, Cunard, Oceania, Princess & RCL
I agree. I've been on two different Carnival lines. NEVER AGAIN....
I have heard that some restaurants do that too with the cutlery. So what I do is even if I don’t use a spoon or fork or knife, I purposely put them in my empty soda cup and put a ton of garbage that I’m not using into that cup to make sure that everything is washed
Went on back to back carnival cruises, got sick on the first. Dirty tables, teenagers running amok....bad, loud entertainment.....NEVER again!!!!!!
My experience as well. Carnival Freedom and valor. Never again. I'm trying a new line in two months.
Too many issues. Have never and will never cruise Carnival or its subsidiaries. If this is what we're hearing about, imagine the unknown problems.
Unbelievable! I am glad that I have no plans to cruise with Carnival!
Could happen on any cruise lines, and Carnival owns Princess. Do you know what goes on behind closed door at your favorite restaurant. Humm ?
Thank You, keep up the excellent work for all of us travelers!
The more I hear about Carnival, the less enchanted I am. Don’t think I’ll be looking for a Carnival cruise any time soon.
Me either, never been but never wanna be.
same same
42 cruises with Carnival have 10 more booked There the #1 cruise line in the world
Carnival is called the walmart of cruise lines for a reason.
Wow, this is bad! The leak over the fish area is the worst IMO 🤢 You're right that this boils down to poor management.
Love your vlogs!
They can correct the problems but it is difficult to correct/change the mentality of the crew. Sounds like a management switch is in order.
If half of this stuff is true, and I bet it is, then Carnival has more than a good bit of contempt for its passengers, and Carnival is laughing all the way to the bank.
Carnival Freedom received 100% on their inspection .
Congratulations on surpassing 50k subscribers, Don! Love your content and the honesty with which it is presented! My family's first cruise is coming up in about 5 days!
Oh, God how I wish I'd listened even MORE closely. We just got home and I don't know that I've ever had such mixed emotions. Ha!
Humm when they ask the cruiser to practice cleanliness they fail, well have to say it Don "DONT TOUCH MY FOOD!"
Look at the poppy seed bagel. Oh, the poppy seeds are walking!! 😲
Tell us how you really feel. Lol love your videos very informative and fair.
Doing a new carnival ship in feb. I will have my eye out!
My first cruise 3 years ago was on a carnival ship. The food was not good at all. The dining room was dirty. That ship has been revamped since but it did not leave a very good impression on me. Everyone always raved about the food on a cruise, but did not experience that with my first cruise, I have since.
Soooooo, the hotel manager is looking for a new job, right?
No Fantasy for me! I agree with you especially when it pertains to the food. Your presentation made me laugh because I DO know how you feel about food cleanliness.
I was waiting for this video....I saw this event on the news feed this morning. 😉
Love you Don! A future in health inspection?
When I worked as a waitress years ago, we were told to keep dinner rolls that customers didn't eat, so they could be served to other unsuspecting customers. If there was a bit of food or gravy on them, we were told to use our fingernails to scrape it off.
I cannot begin to imagine all the 'shortcuts' that are taken in cruise ship kitchens.
GOOD GRIEF!
Thanks for the warning/update. It takes a crew to run a ship.
There have been a total of 20 failed inspections for carnival in almost 30 years. Fantasy has had 4 including 1990 when she was a brand new ship
The dirty silverware was enough for me. This ship and Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas shoukd be scuttled.
Doing well with your sub’s, Don. So close to 5️⃣0️⃣K!
Don, I am so grateful for these updates you do for us.
You will have a great time on the Royal Princess. I promise!
Gross!
Hello. Same same. Icky poo. Practically need to bring sani wipes everywhere or stay home like Monk. He isn't wrong either.
@@oceanside88 Exactly ... I might just bring my own cutlery! :)
I agree it must be the management of the ship. Sailed on the Carnival Magic for the first time this year, and they were FASTIDIOUS about cleanliness. Now I'm wondering if I should google for those scores, lol.
i wont be showing my wife this one. lol On vista in Nov
Thanks for the information. Carnival can't seem to catch a break.
I am going to bring plastic gloves and Clorox wipes if I go again.
!!! Good thinking
I would say all kitchen staff re-training is in order!!
I had an 8 year break between my last two cruises. My next break will be considerably longer!
Melissa Siegel just don’t go with Carnival!
