I love that Tao finally took the chance to really get to know Nick in this season and realize that he wasn’t just some popular jock boy trying to steal his best friend. He’s actually a nice dude who truly cares a lot about people.
I love the scene in the hotel room where Nick tells Tao that one of the reasons he thinks Tao is cool is because he cares about his friends without worrying what other people think of him for that. Nick is shown struggling with this exact thing in both seasons - he cares about Charlie, but he is not very good at doing it "loudly" and not caring what other people think, especially in season 1. There are several times in season 1 when he struggles to stand up to Harry about his behaviour to Charlie. And even in season 2 he has trouble being open about the way he cares about Charlie - he finds it hard to progress to being open that Charlie is his boyfriend. So it makes sense that this is something he admires in Tao.
Even if it was meant as a ship there's nothing wrong. Personally I can't see it and I prefer them with their actual partners but I can't say anything if people ship them since it's not illegal and I can see why they would ship them if Elle and Charlie didn't exist.

And in the one where Nick accidentally shaves their puppy, there is a text conversation that shows what is fairly clearly meant to be Tara and Darcy. In the recent Q and A, Alice has even shown Nick and Charlie at about 45-50, still together.
