Yo Jimmy. I'm a Maidiac thru and thru. No doubt I love the Thrill MV and it saved the band from disbanding back in 2015 (Yes, we all give thanks for that). But if this MV got you to say "New Favorite Band?" then I think you're going to need a defibrillator as you journey down the Pigeon hole. In this MV you get a tiny glimpse of what could be. Their ascent to being one of the best ROCK bands anywhere is consistent and astounding. They are the needed shot in the arm to the Rock world. They shine bright at all times but are like a quasar when they play LIVE in front of their fans. Once you witness this and get to know their personalities you will agree. A more Awesome and FUN band you will not find. With an already outstanding 110+ song catalog, a new EP is dropping September 21, 2022. They will be touring the States in October 2022. Were featured in the recent Netflix movie KATE with 2 featured songs. Have done songs for anime and esports events. Check out DOMINATION-LIVE from their YT channel for the quintessential Band-Maid Live. Peace. 4.29

Excellent reaction. These ladies are much better live. One of my personal favorites of theirs is "Manners". There is a live double header of them playing "Manners" and "Black Hole", which really shows their range. You'll probably get a lot of requests for "Domination" live. That's a great song too.

Welcome to Band-Maid the best hardrock band on the planet and their awesome community! These ladies are wholesome down to earth, really damn talented, loving their fans, loving each other (best friends), have an unique chemistry and are really creative. Good thing you discovered them, you are in for a ride :) Greetings from Germany!

Yes, this is absolutely your new favorite band. I discovered these ladies 2 years ago during COVID lockdown and I've listened to them daily since. They kept me sane in some emotionally demanding times.
Rooted in the tradition of hard rock, they also incorporate punk (Choose Me), metal (Black Hole), blues (Manners), and jazz (Wonderland). MISA's funky bass is featured in most songs, even the head-banging-est like Rinne.
Thrill, and the album it came from, is fantastic. I hadn't heard a sound like that in a long long time. But they really took off with Alone when Kanami started composing the music.
Recommendations: Some of my top 5 aren't on their official channel. These are.
    1) Manners. Both MV and live are great. The live comes as a 2fer with the stunning Black Hole.
    2) Corallium. Crazy diversity. Everything Band Maid in 1 song. Access the audio in the Sense playlist.
    3) Play live. For me, the quintessential Band Maid. Instrumental perfection with Saiki commanding the crowd.
    4) Blooming MV. Featured in Netflix's Kate. Kanami's best composition. The best bridge to outro I've ever heard.

"I need to go back and hear that epicness one more time." Without realising it, you summed up 99% of Band Maid's songs.
This Thrill video on TH-cam saved their career. The success of it opened an international audience and recognition outside of Japan. For several years they were less well known in Japan than abroad.
In their earlier days the songs were written for them but they had control over the arrangements and I believe some lyrics. Once Kanami, the lead guitarist starting writing the songs, they became in general, more complex songs. Less pop/rock and more rock.
There can be a tendency for newbies to ask about their 'heaviest' song but that is not what Band Maid is about.
Miku the rhythm guitarist, used to work in a Maid Cafe and had the idea of cute maids playing rock. She found Kanami advertising in a music magazine as a song writer guitarist. She in turn new either Misa bass or Akane drums. Who in tern new the other. For a short while Miku sang lead but realising her voice was not strong enough, they auditioned and found Saiki.
As time went on both Misa and Saiki, ditched the maid uniform as they were not comfortable wearing it.

Miku who was the band creator, used to work in a Maid Cafe that's where the dress wear idea came from. She then hired Kanami the lead guitarist who then referred her to Akane the drummer who then recommended MISA the bassist. Miku realized early on that she was not going to be able to sing in the way that was needed for their type of music so they brought on Saiki as the lead singer.

    • @outwest1014

  • @avader5
    @avader5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

This 2015 video was the make-it-or-break-it video for Band Maid. In fact at this point Miku couldn't even play the guitar (Kanami filled in rhythm guitar) since she thought she was only going to be a vocalist in the band. However this video did so well they decided that Band-Maid was going to be a successful project and that gave them the exposure and financial wherewithal to get started. This is before Misa and Saiki started dressing Gothic. Band-Maid is Jimmy Page approved!

Welcome aboard, Jimmy. You are embarking on (along with many others - 147 million YT views plus over 30 million reactor plays!) an awesome, progressive, hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid:

BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (124 songs with their new album “Unleash” dropping September 21, 2022), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom.
Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular!
Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: th-cam.com/video/Uds7g3M-4lQ/w-d-xo.html Their later songs from albums Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Sense, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on.
But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori.
And many songs are represented with over 40 well produced music videos. th-cam.com/users/BANDMAID
Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:
     ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” th-cam.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/w-d-xo.html
 Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th “Domination” th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html
     ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” th-cam.com/video/-qQnKILR5u0/w-d-xo.html
 Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (Full concerts from the last two songs are on bandmaidprime.tokyo and DVD/BD/CD)
And some of the better quality 2019 tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s two of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues:
 Taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: th-cam.com/video/__1th7ctgMo/w-d-xo.html
     And by JOSER8845 in LA: th-cam.com/video/usWZvlGGDSs/w-d-xo.html.
If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo
Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid.
For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009
    Band-Maid Members:
Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen!
Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 30 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!!
Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 30 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more!
Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 31 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 29 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!
Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans.
    [BAND-MAID NEWS]
 BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo
 Got your tickets yet? BAND-MAID's 8 state, 11 gig USA tour is SOLD OUT! HOWEVER, they just added two more venues in New Jersey Oct. 30 (4,000 seats), and Chicago, Nov. 1. And the "AFTERSHOCK FESTIVAL 2022" in Sacramento, California on Sunday, October 9 may still have tickets. Check Ticketmaster and Band-Maid’s website quickly!

Oh my gosh, you have opened the floodgates. Why do you love this? Because they may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative. You are going to get a lot of suggestions. These are a bunch that are official or unlikely to come down. First, a little background on the girls:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 28 years old
MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 29 years old
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar Composer and main arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 30 years old
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 30 years old
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 31 years old
Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual solo.
Next, you have to listen to them live. They are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio.
    Freedom (Feb 14 2020) th-cam.com/video/FHpuEqMAcDg/w-d-xo.html
    Domination (Feb 14 2020) th-cam.com/video/QbyQCJn6rYg/w-d-xo.html
    Choose Me (Feb 14 2020) th-cam.com/video/HcqitbXgigU/w-d-xo.html

    Daydreaming (slower ballad, gorgeous): th-cam.com/video/RCaeUkrItyY/w-d-xo.html
If you want more background, I suggest you react to this classic interview. It's hilarious, it's insightful, you will learn their names for good, and their cuteness will destroy your brain. Oh, and they are completely nuts. th-cam.com/video/R4PofsQYwn4/w-d-xo.html

It's really not an exaggeration to say their songs range from great to masterpiece (with a few merely good ones thrown in). Good songs to react to next is their MV of Dice or Choose Me (on their YT channel) or a personal fav of mine Puzzle (live version from Studio Coast 2017), which you can find rummaging around the Internet. Miku worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the 'GAP' between cute maid outfits and rock music.would stand out. They have been going for nearly ten years. The reason they are still popular is that they don't stick to one music genre. From Rock they have some wonderful ballads and their last album was more progressive rock. Nearly every track has a mind blowing guitar solo by music writer Kanami and some heavy Bass from Misa. But they are simply Band Maid. Simply the best band for the past nine years. Thrill was to going to be their last song together as their record company was going to drop them. The rest is legend.

Great reaction to one of the best hard rock bands out there! Most people start by reacting to "Freedom" or "Domination" live. But you are starting right at the beginning with their first hit single, so that is cool! The best thing about BAND-MAID is that they have a ton of great songs. Their live stuff is the best, but they have some great music videos as well (songs like "Dice", "Blooming", "Daydreaming", "Don't You Tell Me", "The Non-Fiction Days", etc.). "Thrill" was their first and lowest budget M/V. It just gets more and more awesome from there! 😎🤘

You have just started down the "Pigeon" hole, keep on checking out their 100+ catalog of kick ass rock, progressive, metal, jazz, you name it, they can do it all. Over the last 9+ years their sound has morphed and progressed from a produced band singing other writers and composers music to now all original music. As a fact, Japan have a really long history in rock and metal all-female bands. Only a few years ago all of those bands are reaching "the west" thanks to TH-cam and other services.
Just think that one of the oldests metal bands in Japan still active are "Show-Ya". An all female metal band founded in 1981. Same year was founded a punk-rock band called Shonen Knife (also still on stages). Popular rock bands like "Scandal" starts in 2006 (still active). Other metal bands like Aldious from 2008, and the list goes on.
There´s a lot of rock and metal bands in Japan, but there´s two issues about them.
The first in obviously the language. Almost all of them sing in japanese (Lovebites, a really great metal band sing in english).recently
The other is the fact that Japan have a huge internal market. Near 100 millions of potential clients, so the record labels don´t promote overseas until recently.
And also, the technical level of musicians in Japan is really high.

TH-cam insisted, so after being recommended multiple times I finally click. WHOA! What? It was nothing like I expected. To get a sense of their range of styles (and the progress they have made) I would suggest the 2 song live video "Manners, BLACK HOLE" from their official TH-cam channel. "Manners" is a groovy bluesy "Classic Rock" style song with that BAND-MAID spice. It is one of my all time favorite "classic rock" songs. "BLACK HOLE" is a 220 bpm sonic assault of progressive instrumentation and fantastically layered vocals. "BLACK HOLE" is currently my favorite BAND-MAID song Followed closely by "Corallium". Looking forward to more reactions!

From never-heard-of-it to favorite band in 1 song! So awesome! Hey, you and I share something in common -- my first intro to Band-Maid I believe was also watching that same "Thrill" video. After that, it took me a few hours of watching, listening, and reading everything I could find from Band-Maid before it became my new favorite band. 3 years later, still my favorite. Welcome to the club.
I noticed you didn't mention the drummer. My recommendation for your next video is one with her showing off her amazing drumming skills. Watch the official live video of "Freedom" at their TH-cam channel. Six years after "Thrill", you'll hear how insanely the drummer improved during those 6 years. It's like she leaped more like 60 years. "Freedom" also features 2 singers, vocal harmonies, the works. Try it!

The music video you just watched holds a special place in our hearts. This was the match that started the fire. They have total control of their music. Kanami composes the basic music, sending it to Akane and MISA for their fills of drums and bass. Once the music is complete it is sent to Miku for the lyrics. Saiki works with Miku. Then into the studio for final production.
They will be performing at the Aftershock music festival, Sacramento, CA in October. From they start their national tour of 13 cities, mostly sold-out.

If you can find live performances, you should always go with those. Manners and Black Hole will be highly requested as there's a live performance video featuring both songs. Both are excellent and showcase how diverse they can be in a single video. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Every song is a different experience and a showcase of their incredible talent. They don't have a bad song.
Some recommendations to get you going:
Manners and Black Hole (As previously mentioned), Giovanni, Puzzle, Domination, Blooming, Play, Bubble, Warning, Freedom, Cross, Rinne (Reincarnation), Daydreaming, secret My lips, Don't you tell ME, No God, YOLO, Sense, Different... Onset and Without Holding Back are two great instrumentals. And I should stop before I end up listing 50 songs... Others will give plenty of other suggestions, I'm sure.
Point is, pick any song of theirs and listen and you can't go wrong.
Lastly, some of their songs you may have to "look around" if you want to find live performances of them. And you may not be able to find a live performance at all. That's OK. They do have some great MVs as well. And in a case where you can only listen to the audio, that's okay too, because their songs are that good.

I second all the recommendations to see a live video and the standard is to watch “Domination” - official live video.
You won’t believe how awesome they are live. You’ll notice other changes, too, as they’ve grown from girls to killer women musicians of the highest professionalism and craft.
The focus is squarely on the music these days as they compose more intricate music but they always keep the simpler elements of great rock music at the core of everything they do. They are special and extraordinary and your journey with the pigeon and her 4 equal partners will be amazing.🔥🔥🔥

MIKU “We want a big gap between how we look and how we perform in order to be unique,” said Kobato. The band plays hard rock. Their strong vocals and powerful drumming contrast their sweet and cute appearance, which has attracted many fans.
Interviewer: Maid outfits aren’t exactly rock ‘n’ roll. What is your ultimate heavy metal costume?
MIKU “Now Band-Maid’s outfits are part of rock n roll, so we pick these!”
What’s the meaning of the name “BAND MAID”?
Miku: I used to work at a maid cafe, and I thought “I want a band!” So it became BAND-MAID - maids in a band!
What do you like best about your maid costumes?
Kanami: Not all BAND-MAID members wear really frilly maid costumes. We each have our own style, so our maid costumes match each member’s personality. I like how it looks cute and gives a lady-like impression.
Misa: I like how the costumes are a contrast - in a good way - from our hard rock, heavy songs and the personality we get to show in our live performances.
What would you say to someone who told you girls can’t play metal music?
Akane: Crush that prejudice. Just crush it.
Interviewer: Why should people listen to Band-Maid?
MIKU - “We’re not a pop idol group! Don’t judge us on how we look. We want to blow you away with our heavy rock sound.”
BTW - MIKU could not play guitar when this song came out. She has since learned to play the guitar and has her own signature line with Zemaitas.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for these talented ladies. This was their first music video and basically their introduction to the rest of the world. They have a vast catalog of music that is pretty diverse. They have some some songs that are slower, some more poppy, hard rock like this one and some that border on thrash. If you want to dive deeper into their catalog, here are my suggestions:
    1) Dice (hard rock like this one)
    2) Warning (more up tempo than this one)
    3) Daydreaming (more poppy)
    4) Rinne (thrash like)
    5) Endless Story (another more poppy track)
    6) Domination (live version- shows their energy/musicianship)
    7) Play (live version)

Thank you for reacting to the BAND-MAID song.
Their concept is instead of servicing customers with household chores
It's about serving their great songs.
Their live performances are of the same quality as their music videos and will not disappoint audience.
That's why they don't miss 5 hours of practice a day.
In other words, they are prepared to be professionals who provide music.
As your reaction shows, BAND-MAID's songs are full of intense passion and energy,
and at the same time, they contain a lot of playing techniques and the melody is catchy,
so they deprive the listener of their physical strength.
That's why the length of one song is always a little less than 4 minutes or less than 4 minutes.
Considering the fatigue of the audience in Live,
it also includes the hospitality to their audience who values Live.
This is the next song I want you to react to.

Thrill is a banger, but must be considered one of their easier songs.
At this time what they did was highly supervised by their record company.
Since then they've evolved their sound a lot.
To satisfy my OCD you can do "Play" and then "Domination", both official live from 2020.
Last note of Play is the first on Domination...
My favourites? "Blooming" and "Daydreaming" who both have great music videos!

  • @Parker--

The funny thing is this is like the simplest song (first EP not included). This is good, but their newer stuff is better. For a live performance, I suggest Domination official live. If you want some of the highest energy rock you've heard, go with Warning (the music video, not live. Live is without an audience and the MV is fire). Blooming (MV) really shows the genius of their work. And No God (live video, no MV)... well, learn to walk before you run and in the case of No God, walk before you teleport through parallel universes.😉

I always wince just a bit when I see Thrill as a first reaction, because it’s such a simple song, and they’re so much better since. I tend to forget that it’s still a great song in its own way, and still impresses most people. It sounds much better now when they play it live and Miku’s cutting loose on rhythm guitar (she couldn’t play at all when this video was released).

But do sometime watch Manners/Black Hole ... that double video shows off their groovy funky side, and their brilliant frantic chaos side. Then, for something totally different watch Gion-cho ... and then watch one of their acoustic performances. They do many genres, from acoustic ballads to thrashy, metal-like hard rock.
