  • Today we will be creating a 26-MAN baseball roster featuring only FELONS & criminals who served HARD TIME (with a couple of exceptions for a DUI & pending case). How good can this team be??? Well, it has HALL OF FAMERS, record holders, big power hitters, elite arms and blazing fast runners! I'd say this PRISON team could win

This team would unironically be a World Series favorite if they played a season with everyone in the primes. Gooden, McLain, and Blue would be easy Cy Young candidates, Urbina and Vasquez were elite closers during their career, and the lineup would be stacked with MVP contenders in Rose, Cepeda, Fisk, Dykstra, Strawberry, and Franco.

Do you remember that Denny McClain was a 30-game winner. There have been 147 individual 30-game-win seasons in baseball history. Most were in the 19th Century. The rest, except for McClain's, all occurred before World War II. McClain won 31 games in 1968.
I don't like reaching to put Carlton Fisk on this roster either. In 150 years of baseball history, there has to have been a catcher capable of handling the pitchers who got in some legal trouble. If he was a weak hitter or didn't play so long, so be it. That's baseball.

While he never became a part of a starting lineup, Gates Brown was a premiere pinch hitter for the Detroit Tigers. His signature season was 1968 when he batted .370 as a pinch hitter, garnering several key hits to help the Tigers win the pennant.

Craig Biggio was an all-star and a silver slugger as a catcher early on in his career. He was also arrested for DUI and was sentenced to community service. It was clearly a mistake which he didn't repeat and he was quite a good person with his work with "the Sunshine Kids". He shouldn't be considered a criminal but since catcher is so hard to find might be worth a mention.

In addition to Ron LeFlore, the 1970s Tigers had another player they signed after a stint behind bars, Gates Brown. His real first name was William. The Gates name came from someone having opened gates to let him out of jail. He actually joined the team in the 1960s and was Denny McLain's teammate on the 1968 World Series winning team.

Martin Bergen, who played 337 major league games, 334 at catcher for the Boston Beaneaters (later the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves) played from 1896-1899 and helped them win 2 NL pennants. K*lled his wife, 2 kids and then himself in 1900, so although he obviously didn't serve prison time, he certainly committed the most egregious crimes of all. I just came across that after watching this video because i seemed to remember that a former mlb player had k*lled someone.

I have to say, I don't like the idea of putting Carlton Fisk in this lineup. I don't idolize him, but he just doesn't meet the criteria. There must have been a catcher somewhere with the capability of handling the pitchers who got in some trouble with the law. Could have been a 19th Century player, a 20th Century player, a contemporary MLB player or a Negro League player. There had to be someone. Loaded teams have carried catchers who were not good hitters because they could handle the pitchers and had an arm. The absence of Gates Brown is a glaring omission also. Brown was a "people's choice" kind of player. The rosters expand to 40 late in the season. You can expand it a little. And you can find a catcher who did some time too.

Biggest weakness is depth at catcher and middle infield, poor Carlton Fisk is going to be worn out (though he did catch 150+ with the Red Sox)
    Biggest omission: John Wetteland.
Others off the top of my head: C Marty Bergen (Bill Bergen's brother) murder-suicide on his family in 1900. Julio Machado, a reliever with Milwaukee circa 1990 for 2-3 seasons, got into trouble in his home country and got jailed for a long time. Luis Polonia. Len Koenecke, 1930s outfielder, shot and killed fighting with a pilot mid flight. John Glenn an outfielder-1b in the 1870s. After his playing career (i think in 1886) he got lynched for allegedly having sex with a 9 year old girl. I think Mitch Williams got into some trouble post career. Oh and Mel Hall

While he was never convicted, Jeff Reardon is interesting for being the only MLB player to ever be found Not Guilty in felony court by reason of insanity.

These guys did NOT make mistakes, they made bad choices. The term “mistake” implies committing an act that they did not know was illegal. There is no way any of these guys could have believed their actions were legal, they just thought they could get away with it.

Too bad you weren't able to include a manager and coaching staff for this team, if there are any people that would qualify for those positions.
