hi... recently read the book. given it's utterly depressive, yet beautiful for it's honesty. To me, the book and the time that the author writes of, depicts a very repressive, violent and male dominated society. Which Japan still is..

Felling alienated in Japan is a sign of a healthy human being. They are robots not humans. There is something majorly wrong with Japanese society.

Some of Dostoevsky's books like Crime And Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov , and The Death of Ivan Ilyich
by Tolstoy ,Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev, One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisnovitch by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn etc in Russian literature are very depressing. Ofc Dostoevsky is mentioned in Osmau's book. I think Russian/Japanese literature shares a bleakness rarely observed in other literature around the world. I read Kakuro By Soseki. A bildungsroman but being japanese it was mostly bitter than sweet. Mark Twain for me now.

I believe these authors wrote what they knew best and they wrote it well. I agree with you, Russians and Japanese have a way of looking at the world and it is plainly reflected in their writing.

Do watch the anime Aou Bungaku. It's an adaptation of the novel.
