Moving is always a chore. Good luck with that. Josey Records looks like the type of place I could lose an entire day to without talking to a single person. Boulevard Trash looks like the type of place I can lose a day to talking to the owner.

Thanks for wishing me luck on my move, Eric! And your comment is spot on. We ended up chatting a while with the owner of Boulevard Trash because we were the only shoppers at that time! Really dug all these stores. Hope you are having a better year than last year so far. ✌🏻🎶🎶

Nice to see you going through the Crass records. The choir I sing in was recently involved in a Crass release, doing a reworking/remix of G's Song:

A choir performing a remix of a Crass song? Too much! You have left me with a twisted vision of my mom's LDS choir singing a cover version of Bata Motel.

The records in the background remind me a lot of my youth. The Sound, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Rain Parade all have releases on this upcoming RSD. I also picked up Unarian Dances by Drab Majesty last week. Take care and lately, I've been listening to PIL-Metal Box. There's not a lot of hooks on these records but the Wobbly One saves the day.

Hey Hanna, great video. I've found that making your own shelves from birch plywood is the most convenient. Measure the available spaces, then many suppliers will cut the sizes for next to nothing. Fix them with wood glue and corner brackets, and when you polish sand them they'll look so much better than Ikea crap, as well as being stronger. And it really doesn't take much work. All the best, Mike

Glad you had a fun visit to Dallas. Josey Records is great. They do a really nice Record Store Day. Very organized and well-stocked.
I don't know too much about Tom Verlaine's solo stuff. I need to expand my horizons.
Downloaded Low's Transmission. I did not know about that. Thanks.
And just ordered Like Magic in The Streets. I hadn't seen that either. Definitely looking forward to your Go-Betweens video. They were a wonderful band and a great live act.
I am in Tulsa for the Elvis Costello show at Cain's (no Dallas date scheduled) so will have to check out Boulevard Trash. It looks great.
And most importantly you finally got Boodle Boodle Boodle by the Clean! I love that they kept the packaging a perfect replica and included the comic. Fingers crossed they do the follow-up Great Sounds Great. An equally good EP.
The single re-released is their debut Tally Ho! And I would 100% recommend it. I love buying 45s but even if it is not your thing the music is worth it.
I struggled with Radiohead, especially their 90s output, yes even the much-lauded OK Computer. It all does nothing for me.
if you imagine they started in 2000 with Kid A they are a great band. If you have any interest then play the track The National Anthem. Play it 2 or 3 times. If that gets you maybe you should persevere. Their 21st-century output makes them one of my favorites.
Thanks again for a great video and if you read all this thank you.

Hi Richard! Great to get a comment from you, as always! Oh man, RSD at Josey must be a dream. Always wanted to attend an RSD drop at one of the bigger stores where they sometimes give you a a sheet of paper and you can check off what you want and you can pick it up at the counter!
So glad you were able to download Low's Transmission, too!
I had not previously known about this Magic in the Streets book, either. I'm in the middle of it now. Fantastic thus far.
Let me know what you think of Boulevard Trash when you stop in Tulsa for the EC show! So jealous. In today's video I'm wearing an EC shirt!
I'll look into getting Tally Ho from the Clean because I dig them lots!
I suppose I will check out The National Anthem by Radiohead, but grudgingly! Take care, my friend!

Flashlight may be the true successor to Marquee Moon and Adventure ten years out. A CD double comp called the Miller's Tale contains rarities,b-sides,and live stuff from Verlaine's solo years and is more than worthwhile. Awwww man, When you showed Boodle Boodle Boodle by the Clean my coffee took the scenic route from my nose outwards! Actual Flying Nun pressing? My word! I know Flying Nun put out a Clean comp. called Compilation in the 90's containing everything up to Vehicle Lp but the 4 rec. Anthology on Merge is also a fine overview. I could go on forever about the Clean and I do! Looking forward to next video as always!

Bill was a Dallas fixture for decades. His store was amazing and confusing and inspiring and crammed with decades of collector items. He passed and Josey acquired his store. If you get back to the DFW area check out Recycled Books in Denton on the square. Denton has one of the largest music schools in the nation. Not as big as Josey but lots more jazz as that's what UNT is known for. But also for some alternative garage band birthing's.

      @TheOmahaIntrovert  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Greetings, Ron! Not sure if we'll get back to the Dallas area again anytime soon but I appreciate the suggestion to check out Recycled Books. I kind of wish I had seen Bill's store before Josey bought his stock! Cheers, my friend!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Bill was a piece of work. He collected not only records, but esoteric posters, handbills, anything related to music really. The place was notorious for being organized in a way that only Bill could decipher. You either just wandered and discovered, or you had to ask Bill to find something for you...and he always knew exactly where stuff was. He had a small stage in the back where bands could play though I never caught a performance there. I did shoot an interview with Bill for Icelandic Television, of all things, who was doing a special on The Dixie Chicks. He had some early connection to them. Though all the interview was in English, all their commentary was in Icelandic with an occasional "Dixie Chicks" inserted. Kind of like listening to the Chef on Sesame street talk about music. If you find yourself getting interested in jazz, percussion, gamelon, chamber music, etc. I suggest you look up University of North Texas on youtube. The One O'clock Lab Band will absolutely blow you away. When I was working at the University way back when, Bare Naked Ladies played the local bars along with a lot of other punk/indie bands. Since the College of Music is so huge, rare records and cds are constantly surfacing in strange places. If you are really really adventurous check out Brave Combo, local denton cult dance band, who tout themselves as a Nuclear Polka Band....they really ARE huge in Japan-go figure? Thanks for your channel and all the work that it takes to keep it going. Hope your new digs work out well.

I am definitely going to have to hit up Josey's Records the next time I am up in Dallas. That would make it worth the trip alone. Thanks for all of the footage in the store. I am a fan of Low too and I have never seen those two EPs before and I would be curious to hear them cover Joy Division. Drab Majesty and Wild Nothing...I swear I have encountered both before on a digital dig but I don't remember either. I will have to go back and give them another listen. The Wild Nothing was just recently re-released a year or two ago and the distinctive cover made me remember it again. I am with you when film in crowded places. I hate doing that and I have always wanted to respect people because I hate having myself filmed. So cool to see you pick up the Clean's reissue. I am glad they did a faithful reproduction of Boodle Boodle Boodle. Nice to see Lana Del Ray. Ultraviolence is my favorite album of hers and I bought it when it came out. I didn't realize that her vinyl was hard to come by. I am totally with you on Cherry Red's compilations. It just doesn't get any better. Very nice giftage from your friend.

Hey Paul! Yes, I would say if you only had time for one store to visit in Dallas, go to Josey, hands down! You may dig both Drab Majesty and Wild Nothing. I haven't heard any of the newer Wild Nothing offerings, so I don't know how much their sound has changed.
Yes, honestly I hate filming in public. I know I wouldn't appreciate being filmed in a store if someone I didn't know randomly was doing that! I couldn't get footage of Studio Records because the layout of their store and how many people were in there...it just didn't work out. I'm not really sure why LDR's vinyl is so hard to come across. Some titles are much easier to find than others but I noticed even her latest, Blue Banisters, was hard to get for a while and I don't know if it still is or not. Cherry Red rules! Hope you had a great weekend and thank you for the thoughtful comments, as always. :-)

Mike, the owner, used to be in the music industry so he knows his stuff. As for Texas, we have been going to Josey's since the day they opened!! They have tripled in size since then. Those guys are great. If/When you get back to the Dallas area may I suggest checking out Doc's Records in downtown Ft. Worth. I think you will love it! They have a great music selection. Their prices are very good too. just letting you know.. Ken

Hi again, Kenneth! Yeah, we thought Studio Records was decent. Just didn't find anything to pick up on that particular day. Like how they had the store organized, though. I believe another vinyl community member also mentioned Doc's to me on Instagram. Hopefully if there is a next time we can stop in that store as well! I appreciate the recommendation! Enjoy the rest of your evening!

Hi Hanna! Of course you have to visit record stores when you travel. SO much fun isn't it? Josey Records looks like a great place I'd love to visit. Low is pretty decent, I really like their '90s stuff but have to be in a certain mood to listen. Boulevard Trash in Tulsa looks like a good place I'd visit. Wow, can't believe you found the Sneetches on vinyl. I found a Sneetches t-shirt in a thrift a couple of years ago but it was stained pretty badly. Love the Joy Division sticker. I'm not much of a Radiohead fan either, lol. The books look really interesting! Nice VCLT from Jess! For storage I've been using Better Home and Gardens shelves (the thicker ones) and they hold up well. CD storage for me is just regular shelves, but the CDs are overflowing a bit. ~ Nicola

Hi Nicola! Happy Friday! Thanks for catching up on this one! I really love Low's 90s output the best, too. Wow, pretty obscure and rare to have seen a Sneetches shirt at a thrift store! Too bad it was stained! Yeah, they're a band I don't come across in the wild often, that's for sure! Walmart sells the Better Homes & Gardens shelves, right? I think I have seen them. We have the fun of putting together a bunch of storage shelves this weekend! Hope you've had some luck thrifting lately!

Hi Hannah. I would get lost in Josey Records. I would have to pack a lunch. Wonderful video and frustrating as well. You flipped by a record that I've been hunting for by The Wailers (sixties garage band). I'm friends with their former guitarist, Neil Andersson, and even he doesn't own a copy.
    Nice cameo from Betelgeuse.

Great video Hanna! Wow! Josie records in Dallas really makes me want to take a road trip. It's just a matter of money, gas, and time right? Boulevard Trash is a great name for a record store. Have not thought about that Flestones album for awhile. Wore out the cassette when it came out. Great party record. This house is empty was my favorite track. The Demonstration is fantastic. Check out their last album, Modern Mirror. Your temporary video backgrounds will never be dull as long as you're sitting center stage. Speaking of which, that Pretenders debut behind you, side one is one of the all time great album sides. And considering Brass in Pocket and Mystery Achievement are on side two, you just can't go wrong with that album. As always, thanks for providing other bands to check out. (Ie: The Screetches)

Hi, your video was suggested by TH-cam. Glad I checked it out, and now I'm a subscriber. I live in Houston, but I often visit Dallas as I have family there. I have the same opinion on prices at Forever Young. Bill's Records was in Dallas back in the 80's (maybe earlier), and it was a huge store. However, nothing was priced. So you would take items up to the front counter and typically get hit with sticker shock. Some people would take the approach of dressing down, but that didn't always work either. Although Bill's had some cool stuff in the store, I got the feeling that he didn't want to let things go. I quit going because it was so frustrating. But the store lasted at least thirty years.

Hey there, Erik! So glad you stumbled upon my video/channel. I'm thrilled! Appreciate the sub, too! Another Houston vinyl community member is BarakaPDub. He puts out amazing videos! Interesting commentary/recap of Bill's and how his store was! From what you described it reminds me of a store called Drastic Plastic in Tacoma (not to be confused with the Omaha record label/store). He had some great stuff but a lot of his stuff was not priced. So, when I'd find something he'd then get his laptop out and look it up and price it for me. I never cared for the prices he arrived at, though. So, most of the originally unpriced ones I'd just hand back to him. That being said, the longevity of Bill's is pretty amazing...30 years! Wow! I appreciate you stopping by! Hope to see you here again!

Another great video. I was surprised you had time to do one during your move, but I love the clips of the record stores you visited and then seeing the great finds. I love the band Low and have downloaded their box set, but wish there were some of their albums on vinyl. I also have The Clean album you showed in a digital file. You find all the great stuff on vinyl, and the fact that I enjoy a lot of the same things that I do know a bit about on your videos makes me expand my want list when I see you show something I don't have or know very little about. I love compilations, and those three you have on CD look very interesting, I do know of a lot of the bands listed on those comps. Good luck in your move and keep the vinyl spinning.

Thanks for another interesting video! In your Oklahoma video you scanned the racks and one band in their was Asta Kask from Sweden. I used to like them a lot and they released some great records in the early 1980s. You should give them a listen. Maybe you know already but if you don't the drummer of Sneetches was Daniel Swan who was from Bristol England and in 1977-1978 was in a band called Cortinas who release two great Punk singles in 1977 and a nice PowerPop album in 1978 that are worth checking out.

Hannah: Sorry for the essay! LOL, but.....
I tried finding the Tom Verlaine compilation the gent mentions below, and couldn't thus far, at least in NY. I put in a call to one shop I know in the West Village and he may
have it (he called me back, he used to have it, it sold, and no more are left. Of course) I meant to explain that for some reason, NYC and LI which used to boast some really sick record stores (besides the megas like Tower and Virgin), just doesn't anymore. What you have in Brooklyn and most of Manhattan now (downtown there's nothing uptown) are stores capitalizing on the vinyl trends and charging outrageous prices for it, in most cases. And nobody wants CDs so you are hard-pressed to find things like the Tom Verlaine compilation, or ANYTHING obscure, such as Birdsongs of the Mesozoic which I just read put out their entire collection remastered on CD and vinyl recently, but you cannot find it in shops here, since there are hardly any shops that would even
stock such a thing. Even in NYC this is now true, a very sad situation indeed. My library system doesn't even have more than 2 Tom Verlain CDs in the entire LI area!! Oof.
Amazon wants a whopping $57 for the Verlaine CD, new or used, which is a bit absurd. I refuse
to pay that price for it. Anyway Hanna, this situation in NY is intolerable and untenable. Normally if I buy such things nowadays I just go on eBay or Amazon and get it used,
if possible, or new. Even if I trekked today into Williamsburg or Bushwick Brooklyn and hit up the few indie record stores left extant, I doubt they would have that in stock, even on
vinyl. And even if they did, the price would be quite high. And, I haven't been into NYC for five years almost, because A. Covid B. violence and insanity going on in NYC and C.
it's expensive and time-consuming to do so. I have a car, so that's not the problem. I don't trek up to New England NJ or RI much anymore because it is also expensive
and time-consuming. I don't like wild goose chases, either, though I do normally love road trips and seeking out new stores, etc.
Anyway, my main point is that you guys have it good in the heartland and even Texas boasts some great stores, culture, etc., and of course Cali. and Washington and Oregon
do as well. I find it horrifying and pathetic that NY and the East Coast are beat out for record stores and bookstores now by the rest of the USA. (or most of it) You can still
even go down south to Athens GA, Winston Salem, and other areas VA etc. and find good shops. Atlanta too. But NY? Don't even bother. This is the precise opposite
of the situation in the 70s-mid or late 1990s. I mean, the states I mean did have excellent shops but NY was a mecca and now it's a decimated wasteland. I honestly feel
like weeping over it, but what to do? I love listening to music online too, as much as the next guy, but there's no sub. for buying music and vinyl and owning it and playing
it on a good system or your portable rig.

Hey Scott! Good morning! I’ll be checking on eBay and Discogs for that Verlaine comp. I don’t think I ever buy stuff on Amazon from third party sellers on there because they in particular are severely inflated compared to other sites.
Sorry to hear that the NY area is such a busy now. I was thinking it might be the opposite and maybe there would even be stores for specific genres because of the high population there. I’m probably wrong! What about the record shows there, though? Surely epic? I’m sure the stores may be a bit picked over due to the high demand though…especially the new arrival used bins.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: so far in my travels, my favorite two states for record digging are Washington and Oregon! Man, some of my best finds!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert It was like that 20 years ago or more. Tons of book and record stores have shuttered. The virus killed any record fairs until recently up here. LI has them again, I may attend the next one coming up. WFMU is massive, but no word on if they’re holding their fair this year again. Which is held now in Bklyn rather than Manhattan which was at Metro Auction Center on 14th St., a fantastic facility. I managed to meet Lenny Kaye at the 2004 or so WFMU fair!! @@TheOmahaIntrovert As much as some disparaged Tower Records when it first opened in NYC years ago (and later LI), I miss taking the train into the city hiking down to Tower, and knowing I'll see stacks of the records I was looking for: I went in there in 1987 with my GF and we bought Elvis Costello Out Of Our Idiot EP they had like 5000 copies of it. Or later in 1990 when Vision Thing came out the Sisters of Mercy CD...they only had 5000 at the front register area right when you walked in. I guess we'll never witness the like again. Plus I could then walk upstairs and find the most obscure classical or jazz, folk, box sets, books, cassettes, whatever. you want Buzzocks? They had every CD in print down there on the main floor. And then I would
hit up the West Village stores or East Village for more obscure things, or bootlegs, etc. Oh my lord.

Have you heard Shelleyan Orphan? If not, it's very ornate melancholy pop. Lots of woodwinds, strings, and acoustic guitar with lovely vocal harmonies. Their first album "Helleborine" is a stunner. I read that after "Helleborine" they adopted a more mainstream sound with a drum kit and guitars, and that the songwriting is way more modern and conventional. Maybe if I find other albums cheap I'll pick them up.

Hanna, love your impromptu backdrop. I just bought Dead Letter Office on CD a few days ago. Those road trip stores look really good, nice finds. "A Town Called Walker" actually got some airplay as a single on "modern rock" stations in the Stone Age. Is it me, or does Lloyd Cole kind of sound like Verlaine with less vibrato? Honestly, those Cherry Red comps are ravaging my savings! Have you seen the Shoegaze genre guide from "the makers of Uncut"? I ordered it online and got it late last year. I've yet to really dive in but it looks pretty cool. 122 pages, heavy stock, no ads, pretty slick and colorful, the usual phase 1 suspects but also current discoveries. I think it was $30 w shipping from the U.K. Not cheap for a mag, but why not me?!

Hey Peter! Thanks for the props on my very impromptu backdrop! Do you prefer Cole or Verlaine when it comes to their solo career? I really love Alchemy from Cole because of its power pop leanings! I have a shoegaze magazine guide. I’m trying to recall if it was Uncut who put it out. It may have been Magnet? I’ll look that up! $30 is pricey for a mag! Glad you’re digging the Cherry Red offerings, too! Brilliant and thanks for being here as always!

Lots of interesting additions to your collection . I will be exploring the ones by Clean , the Sneetches , and Wild Nothing . Yoer video of Josey’s in Dallas reminded me of Record Theatre in Buffalo ( now sadly gone ) . I used to make regular road trips to Record Theatre from Toronto ( especially after our wonderful Sam the Record Man closed , which was multiple floors of record heaven ) . As for Cd shelves , I use Ikea book shelves that are are about 6 inches in depth , and about 4 feet high . I can’t remember the name , but they were an offshoot of the Billy shelves . They’re also great for DVDs and BluRays . Good Luck with the move .Cheers !

I need to buy more record shelves anyway so I might as well just place a big order. I bet record theater was an amazing store. I hate when great stores end up closing. Omaha had about three record stores close in 2019, which was odd since that was a big time for this vinyl revival era. Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yes , it’s sad to see the classic record stores disappear . I was in my teens during the mid to late 60s and early 70s . Every Saturday morning , my friends and I would head downtown to explore the new records at Sam the Record Man . It was a huge store that carried a lot of records from around the world . We would often meet kids from neighbouring high schools , and discuss our favourite bands , and get steered towards new artists that played similar styles of music . It was like a giant social club revolving around music . The Vinyl Community in person , so to speak . When Sam’s closed , it was like losing a part of our youth . That’s why it’s so thrilling for me to see channels like yours . You’re keeping that Saturday morning social club spirit alive . Many thanks for that !!!

Hi Pat! Right on, we were just in St. Louis back in December. I think I briefly mentioned it towards the end of my Nebraska to Florida road trip video. Anyway, we were only there half a day and overnight. It was basically our last stop before heading back to Omaha. It was our first time going and we were overwhelmed by the city and definitely didn't have enough time to explore all of the record stores there. The only one we got to stop in was Record Exchange and I honestly didn't like it. A little too chaotic. I hope to go back one day and explore other stores! Let me know which ones you recommend the most!

    • @PatMan1966
      @PatMan1966 2 ปีที่แล้ว

"Too chaotic" is an understatement, that place is a cluster-f**k and also one of my places of employment - lol. I'm the online sales manager there. Too bad I missed you guys. You were probably there on the weekend. I don't work weekends. It would have been nice to see you guys in person. Anyway... Record Exchange... where do I begin... Once upon a time it was a super awesome store, but the owner's hoarding tendencies have become worse over the last ten years and it's really gone down the tubes. The excess audio and video equipment is a nightmare. Another more recent issue is the selection. Everything we sell there is used so our inventory is solely dependent on whatever comes in the front door by way of sale or trade and we just haven't been getting the abundance of great collections that we once did. Unfortunately, I don't see it improving any time soon.

Stores to check out next time you come through would be
Planet Score - a smallish store with a great selection
Euclid Records - great titles in great condition, kind of on the pricey side, but not insane
Dead Wax Records - small store, good selection, but kinda pricey
Vintage Vinyl - a bit overrated (hipsters shop here) but not all bad - selection is decent to so/so
Let me know the next time you guys are in town and maybe we can meet up and I can cart you around to the different stores. Getting around St. Louis can be a bit overwhelming to the unfamiliar.

Checked out Sneetches and could only find an anthology album , but the tunes I heard sounded great. When you were rattling off a list of band names, I thought they all had such strange names. Sneetches is certainly one of them !!
Started listening to Lana Del Rey and she is very intriguing. Lots of profanity used very neatly….reminds me of Liz Phair on Exile in Guyville. I will investigate her further.
I enjoyed your road trip pictures. The first comment I read someone noticed that when you were looking through records in Dallas you came across The Red Album by Grand Funk Railroad. I noticed it too and I was wondering if you had heard their music. They were great on their first five studio albums. But that Red Album recorded in 1969 is the most primal to the extreme greatest garage rock of all time. It’s like The Who Live at Leeds which I know you love a lot. The Bass is like a lead instrument with fast drumming and a scorching lead guitar.
Most people think of “Were An American Band “ or “The Locomotion “. which is nothing like they were at their raw best.
I saw Grand Funk Railroad in 1970 and I got “Live at Leeds” when it came out in 1970.
I was so lucky to experience that
Anyway I was just curious….you have recommended so many bands for me that I have enjoyed very much… I was just trying to return the favor!!!

have imagined I'd be there to see either show. Both rather unlikely. I guess Alex wasn't well but I got to see him play

damn the Dallas Joseys looks awesome. the Amoeba comparison is spot on. I can't think of why the hell I didn't visit that place when I was in Dallas in 2016. I only had time for one store and went to Forever Young. But not sure how I passed up Joseys. Oh well. Now I have another reason to return to Dallas one day. I gotta dig into Fleshtones. They're one of those bands I've known about forever but just never dug into. Always enjoy y'alls road trips. I think you know that's my thing too. I'm off for a two month gig in south carolina next month. I'm trying to ease up on purchases lately but of course I've already checked into 1-2 places to hit up down there. I mean, how can I not? Funny you ask about CD shelves. I just moved into new apartment and have been trying to figure same thing out. But am ending up building my own. I just couldn't find anything that works for my CDs. I have like 1500 and my apartment is the third floor of a house and some of the walls have weird angles. So the only spot I had room to put CD shelves just nothing I found for sale worked. So just gonna build some very simple shelves myself. Great video as always. Hope y'all are doing good.

Happy Friday, Steve! Oh man, you definitely need to check out Josey if and when you go back to Dallas. This store was so epic! We missed Josey the first time and I was really jonesin' to check it out this time!
Aww, SC, nice. That's a state I'd really love to visit. My bro and his girlfriend were just in Charleston but he's not obsessed with records like I am lol.
I think you'd love the Fleshtones. They knew how to rock, that's for sure. I have 3 of their LPs now.
That's really cool you are building your own CD shelves. I know some handy people but they are busy building other projects and well, I'm not handy at all lol. So, I will just buy some shelves.
I need to check out more of your videos. I'm behind on everything due to this move and long workdays. Hope you enjoy your weekend!

I actually do think maybe I have a track or two by them just no full albums. And as for my videos they ain't going nowhere check em out whenever the dust settles.
