What If You Fell Into Molten Metal Terminator 2 Style?

  • We have imagined some pretty harsh ways to go out in a blaze of glory, but this one is extreme. In a faithful recreation of the ending of "Terminator 2" we theorize what would happen if you fell into a molten metal ladle. I think we all know the answer, but watch and find out exactly what would happen to your body at such intense temperatures.

Yeah, I caught that too. I think he may have been thinking about convection or conduction , maybe the latter. Flash evaporation is a thing, but apparently it's called 'flash evaporation'.
Although the play-by-play was fun to listen to, the whole premise is dumb because the second you feel heat in excess of 175 deg F, your survival instincts will kick in and your plans will change. I don't care how big you think your nuts are, the air column over that ladle is more than enough to turn your blood into pudding in a few minutes. No one who isn't on bath salts would hang on a chain (which is also starting to get warm) for more than a few seconds without getting right back on whatever platform they just stepped off of - let alone waiting to be lowered, because the molten steel is under you and you need it in the shot too.

He, another man, and that man's son were all working on a cat walk above a crucible of molten metal. This just happened last month at Deka Battery in Pennsylvania. A man fell into the lead smelter. After 24 hours the smelter was finally cool enough to safely recover the body. I have no idea what was left to be honest. People I know who work there are pretty shaken up over it.

My grandfather was the head of safety in some plant back in the day and he said this actually happened, two workers fell in (back in the 70s). My mom said she remembered that he was gone from the house for almost a whole month because the investigations that happened after kept him on site nearly 24/7. I always wondered (morbidly) what happened to those two poor men...

@@ammarif618 No these things really do happen. In my country Slovakia, kind off near to my home, some 20 km we have metal industry that turns scrap metal into metal pipes. Father of my friend is a sort of security investigator in that company. Approximately a year ago there was an incident. A man in an industrial crane was picking up scrap metal from train wagons and delivering them into this hot ladle. Another man was standing near the edge of this ladle doing some measurements and the crane hit him so he fell into this hot metal. He fell head first. Only thing that remained was his hip down part of the body. The crane operator was proclaimed innocent becouse he didn't see him and the other man was not supposed to be there in that time. So he was innocent but he just went crazy, he just couldn't cope with that thought that he killed someone even if it was an accident and I believe he is now a psychological pacient. It's really sad how fast can accidents happen. (I am sorry for bad English as I mentioned I am from Slovakia)

This was a particularly horrific way to die and I wondered how such a hideous thing could ever be allowed to happen in a modern foundry.
I had wondered what the sequence of damage would be and suspected that unfortunately, it was extremely unlikely to have been pain free.

Having worked in foundries, I know what happens when ANY moisture enters the melt. It causes the melt to erupt in a volcano-like manner. I have seen, first hand, a 1,000 pound crucible completely emptied when an ingot that wasn't preheated to drive out moisture was added to the melt. The molten metal all just blurped out of the crucible and at the same time, launched the offending ingot up to the ceiling, 42 feet above. This is exactly what happened when a nearby foundry had several workers fall into a melt when the catwalk collapsed. The explosion from the bodies instantly turned into steam, destroyed a large portion of that foundry. In other words, you don't know what you are talking about.

I wonder what would happen if you landed on your feet? If the molten steel is dense enough to "walk on" you could theoretically run as fast as you can to the edge and jump out.
I would imagine that it would be like trying to run across a water bed that's slippery and instantly melting off your footwear and the radiant heat coming up and hitting your face would probably choke you and force yours eyes shut.
Regardless, it's a very bad situation no matter the outcome.

If you fell into a large amount or shoved a hand into a bucket it would billow nitrogen gas and freeze. If you know what you're doing, you can mix water in your mouth and drink liquid nitrogen. You can blow the nitrogen gas out your mouth and nose like smoking tricks. I do not recommend this for non-scientists and people prepared for the consequences of oral frostbite

A few years ago I attended a driver training course in the north of England. There were two other people on the course . One guy operated a ladle full of molten metal at a steelworks in Sheffield. Parts of his fingers were missing where he had not got his hand out of the way in time.On hearing this the other older guy remembered a tale In World War II when steelmaking carried on even during German air raids. A bomb exploded in the steelworks and the blast blew some poor guy over the railings and off the mezzanine straight into the ladle full of molten metal.Apparently the effect on his body was the same as you get when you throw a sweet/ Candy wrapper into a fire. He instantly frizzled up to nothing.
