Thank you so much! I was able to find the pull cord at a local home depot store and when when my husband went to replace it found the spring was broken as well. I did not want to spend the 35.00 plus shipping for the whole recoil housing and that was the only way I could find the spring I needed. This worked like a charm. I was able to go help my husband fix it and look like I knew what I was doing. :)
Thanks chaseme81871. Using the drill is a great idea and helped me tremendously. I also appreciate your concern for safety, using tape and the zip tie(s). I'm from NY and much more impatient. Once I got that bad boy wound tight, I simply used a locking pliers (vice grip) to grab the wound coil tightly from above and then just dropped the wound coil into the housing in the pulley. Three minutes tops.
This was sooooo good! Saved my lovely little 125cc Suzuki Quad from me beating it with a hammer. Took me a couple minutes and I even skipped the tape. Bloods great now I can get back to saving those rare fossils in my area before they are destroyed forever in the ocean. You just helped saved some great history! Legend.
It took me two tries to get my spring in using this method, maybe because I was too lazy to bother with the tape. I have never worked on small engines, but this easy-to-follow tutorial had me putting my starter back together as fast as the pros. Thank you for posting this video. The pull start rope on my Craftsman chainsaw has been getting stuck for a few years so I finally decided to fix it yesterday. I did my best to not remove the parts above the spring, but it was all tangled so I didn't have a choice. I too tried to rewind by hand, but had the same issue as everyone else. Today I will try using this method.

My Echo blower wouldn't recoil and I found the spring had jumped off the tab. I struggled trying to figure out how to rewind it and put the recoil back into operation. This video made the job a 15 minute exercise. Thanks so much.

This is a grandmother who just fussed with a tiny spring on my mantis tiller and almost threw my hands up -when I watched you pull yours out and it sprang everywhere I almost had a HEARTATTACK!! In Japan, same same ol'. I wrastled a bit. It won. I thinki', "There gotta be a better way!" Washed up, fired up the TH-cam. Went out and broke it darn good! ;-) Broke it into being fixed, that is.
I just used the housing to rewind it. I hooked the tab in the tab spot inside the housing and then just pushed it around the housing. The tension held it in place and I just kept feeding it in with my thumb. Took 30 seconds...total...
You are a genius!!!!! I wasted about 2 hours today trying to do this by hand & it kept coming undone on me & I said heck with it. I'll try again tomorrow. Fingers crossed ! Lol

Your video was great. I was struggling to coil up the spring. What a great idea. I made one small modification though, I think you'll like it. My spring was smaller so I only needed 2 smaller zip ties. I connected them and slid them up over the chuck on my drill. I held it in place while coiling the spring. Then I was able to drop it down on my coiled spring and SLOWLY release the tension on the spring until the zip tie contained the spring. Thanks for the great video.

Just replaced the recoil starter pully on my blower and the recoil spring jumped out during the install. After 30 mins of frustration I got it in just before my hands gave out. This is worth the extra steps. Thanks for the video I'll definitely use this next time.

Fabulous, such a simple idea, but a serious time saver, I have done this the hard way before, and it takes a really long time and loads of patience, I have a defunct 2 stroke strimmer the rope broke on the other night, so I am going to try this now!
In the 70’s I had a mini bike that had a 5 HP Briggs engine that I broke the pull rope many times. I learned to rewind the spring and get what was left of the pull rope back in on a trail with a 5/16” wrench and a screwdriver. Happened many times. Finally the rope got so short I could not start the engine. Funny how my sisters jump rope came up missing. Should have thought of that when it first broke. I seldom was able to remove the spring assembly and get it back in without a disaster. Learned an easier way. Just wound the spring assembly in the housing and pushed the rope through the hole and into the spring assembly. Dug the end of the rope out with a screwdriver. Tied a knot and done. I was about 10 at the time.
Very good idea. Still worth the $5 I pay the lawnmower shop to do it for me. Worth every cent to not suffer the cramping fingers afterwards. If he starts charging more than 5 bucks, I'll be forced to do it myself again. Then, & only then, will I be trying out this method. Thanks for the info!

Even so, I am going to try one of your commenters suggestions first (you even seem to attract smarter-than-average commenters...) and try to "wind it in, in place, from the outside pin and working to the center." It sounds reasonable--but I've got marks all over my body from trying stuff that sounded like that. Even so, your tutelage is invaluable for its "thinking-out-loud" approach.

It happened that I did find a better way for me: I inserted a (19-yr-old) son between me and the project! I passed on your commenter's description of winding it from outside in and he reported back that it worked fine.

I have ordered another because I unfortunately had about 4 cracks at it and buggered the spring ( and did not clean it off beforehand properly)..... i struggled with it by hand and it wasnt working, hands cramped and got sore like you said, i didnt use the zipties and tape but the drill method was the way to go, anyone else doing it just be careful putting it on the end because my recoil got all bent out of shape where i stuck it in the drill. my mower works again so thanks for the help
Worked great, except I broke off the end of my spring! But I will go back further next time with the drill head. I was still able to get a zip tie on it and feel confident with these now. Just can't get too close to the end as you described. Thank you for posting this!
Amazing spent 3 hours trying to do by hand but i didnt use tape cause i dont got any right now but still worked amazing ill never forget this way so easy
II just fixed one. I tossed the spring, and cut off the top. Use the plastic spool to wrap the pull rope around and pull. Repeat if necessary. The other option is a drill and socket. Works great!

I got lucky and as I was pulling mine apart I saw it was about to come off so I pushed it back together and twisted it as I was pulling it and saw that it unhooked itself and stayed together. Very bad ass handy man thinking there! Unfortunately I have a craftsman lawn mower with a briggs and Stratton engine that is alot more complicated with the parts. I have one open and unravelled in a green 'Gardenline" mower, which is one of the many hardware-store brand entry-level 15-16" cut Chinese mowers that uses a cheap Honda engine copy. Although I have repacked springs in Briggs engines, this is one SOB I cannot get back together.I could kick myself in the ass for ever letting the thing loose.
I've been trying to hand tighten one back into its packaging ring for four days and thought I was brilliant, last night, when I FINALLY realized I should try wearing gloves! Now if only you can show me how to tighten it just a bit, while it's still in the shipment housing, so it fits inside its own plastic housing...might try this out!
I'll work on it. I broke it (or let it loose) by taking it apart. thank you. After that I have to do small engine repair/rebuild/tune up. Snow blowing so important in MN.
Thank you! How much of a hassle is this recoil spring installation? Well? As of 3-04-2018 there are 1.7 million views by frustrated DIY repair people who have watched it hoping for an easier way. It's very considerate of you to have posted this for our benefit.

I can vouch for the "super weak, shaky, cramping hands" comment at the 2:56 mark...what a nightmare! It took me almost 45 minutes and I eventually came up with a different method that worked only because my spring housing is very shallow, but I'll remember this one if I EVER have to stow one of these springs again...not that I'm ever going to let that happen again!

Nice. Small Vise Grips really help to lock the spring up before getting it zip tied to prevent another unwind.
i struggled with it by hand and it wasnt working, hands cramped and got sore like you said, i didnt use the zipties and tape but the drill method was the way to go, anyone else doing it just be careful putting it on the end because my recoil got all bent out of shape where i stuck it in the drill. my mower works again so thanks for the help

Worked great, except I broke off the end of my spring! But I will go back further next time with the drill head. I was still able to get a zip tie on it and feel confident with these now. Just can't get too close to the end as you described. Thank you for posting this!

Exactly what I needed, thanks. I did not use a drill, but used a flathead screwdriver instead.
Amazing spent 3 hours trying to do by hand but i didnt use tape cause i dont got any right now but still worked amazing ill never forget this way so easy
II just fixed one. I tossed the spring, and cut off the top. Use the plastic spool to wrap the pull rope around and pull. Repeat if necessary. The other option is a drill and socket. Works great!

thanks for the video those springs are evil, i had a weed wacker pull start come out on me and it made a huge ball of pure evil that never wanted to go back in.

I got lucky and as I was pulling mine apart I saw it was about to come off so I pushed it back together and twisted it as I was pulling it and saw that it unhooked itself and stayed together. Very bad ass handy man thinking there! Unfortunately I have a craftsman lawn mower with a briggs and Stratton engine that is alot more complicated with the parts. However I am still pretty much positive most of these steps will come in handy tomarrow when I try to fix my recoil spring. Thanks alot lot brother. Much appreciated...

I thank you for sharing that information and I have had problems with the recoil spring myself and could not get it together again. I will remember this when having that problem again.

Awesome idea, thanks for making video! Got my ryobi weedwacker recoil spring replaced in 5 minutes, could have saved me 3 hours last night if I had found the video sooner.
I have one open and unravelled in a green 'Gardenline" mower, which is one of the many hardware-store brand entry-level 15-16" cut Chinese mowers that uses a cheap Honda engine copy. Although I have repacked springs in Briggs engines, this is one SOB I cannot get back together.I could kick myself in the ass for ever letting the thing loose.
I've been trying to hand tighten one back into its packaging ring for four days and thought I was brilliant, last night, when I FINALLY realized I should try wearing gloves! Now if only you can show me how to tighten it just a bit, while it's still in the shipment housing, so it fits inside its own plastic housing...might try this out!

I can vouch for the "super weak, shaky, cramping hands" comment at the 2:56 mark...what a nightmare! It took me almost 45 minutes and I eventually came up with a different method that worked only because my spring housing is very shallow, but I'll remember this one if I EVER have to stow one of these springs again...not that I'm ever going to let that happen again!
