  • Part 1 of an interview I did with Discalced Carmelite Friar, Fr Matthew McGettrick in the 1980s. Fr Matthew was the author of "Meditation for Modern Men and Women" and a well known Retreat Master and Meditation Teacher. This interview took place in the 1980s during a two- week Training Course for Meditation Teachers, and was recorded on Cassette tape.. The photo is the only one I have of Fr Matthew, pictured with myself and Annie (who was also on the Course). Fr Matthew answered my questions during an informal gathering at the end of the Course. Fr Matthew passed away in the 1990s. He was a lovely man, and very holy. Thank you for introducing me to Meditation.through Fr Matthew. Father Matthew passed away on 8th August 1995.
Father Matthew inspired me to try my vocation with the Carmelites. I lasted two years, but found there was no one else like Father Matthew, and no one else on the same wave length as him. He was a one off, a lovely guy. I still miss him.

I have come across this quite by accident. I too attended meditation courses with Fr. Matthew in the early 80's. He was a deeply spiritual man who possessed tremendous insight into the practice of meditiation. He gave me a foundation that has lasted throughout my life. It was so lovely to be able to 'hear' his voice again. Thank you.

I wonder if Father Matthew met Father John Main OSB.

He knew of him but dont think he met him; he didnt agree with John Main's use of just maranatha as a mantra

Thank you. Interesting the term mantra wasn't used often or ever?in Christian Meditation . The suggested word maranatha was only a suggestion then and now however much more so now..many as Bede Griffith chose the Jesus Prayer in John Mains time and others short scripture ...from listening to john main talks it sounded like a must and not an option. I enjoyed Fr Matthews talk on utube
