      The Deda Dog Fang is probably the most robust and best frame mount chain catcher. There are other similar products (3RD EYE CHAIN WATCHER) but they are more flexible and the chain can get by those sometimes. The Deda is solid enough that isn't likely to happen.

    I've been using these K-Edge Chainkeepers for a few years now. I dropped a chain in the middle of a busy intersection that left me standing in the middle of the road. I ordered one when I got home. I have since put one on all of my road bikes and TT bike. No more getting caught in the middle of intersections. It is a great product that works really well.

    Great video! The tip about keeping a 3mm on hand is the chain drops during a crash is a great pick up. I had a commuter e-bike that had a chain keeper built in and when the chain dropped it was possible for the chain to get wedged in place and hard to remove without pulling things apart.

      Thanks a lot for watching and commenting George. Very sorry to hear about your wrists and thumbs. If you want to get back to biking you could try the electric shifters. They're expensive but the shifters work easily more like a computer mouse click. You still have to use your hands to hang onto the bars and brake though. Thanks again!

    On some bikes, the chain can wedge and cause damage to the bottom bracket and the inner crank (especially on 3x) as well as the frame. K-Edge is a company that deserves more attention for their interesting products and our loyalty for manufacturing on shore. All the best to you both.

    Another preventative is to never go from biggie big to small big! Better to go to smallie small before entering the actual climb. Good little device, but steel could handle some mistreatment. Shift the front down first, then the back.

      Appreciate you watching and sharing this great tip, David, you're exactly right that HOW you shift can cause chain drops too so you want to avoid making the shifts you mention. Thank you!

    Jim
    Personally, I would mark the up/down left/right center of the derailleur bolt rather than the contour of the original spacer because the provided K-Edge spacer might differ in size/shape relative to the bolt center from the original one.
    By marking the height and angle (left/right) of the center of the bolt, you are sure that you front derailleur will remain in the same position no mater the discrepancies between the two spacers' size/shape.
    Basically, you want the derailleur in the same position, not the top or side of the spacer.
    Your thoughts?

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and the advice on marking the front derailleur position better Sylvain. I like your idea. Depending on the shape of the frame's mount for the ft. der. it can be challenging to find a place to mark. But I think you could put tape on the mount and mark the tape, that might work. I appreciate you suggesting other ways to do it, thank you!

    Last year I had a similar problem on an old MTB converted to single speed using a tensioner. I may not have had the chain length adjusted properly, but after fixing that I still decided to add some extra protection. I searched for solutions and found the Jump Stop from N-Gear and it seems to have worked fine. Been over lots of rocky terrain and no more falling chain issues.

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the vid ShredGeek. Usually the proprietary chain keepers the bike companies put on the bikes are there for a good reason - they're designed to fit onto the bike in a specific way that works for the frame. And they usually work really well. So I don't think you'd gain anything by going to the K Edge.

    Thanks Jim! Just ordered this.. had my first drop this morning and scratched up the carbon a tiny bit but luckily no major damage. I checked FD H L limit screw settings and they were within spec of Shimano’s specs. The only thing that I did last night was I aligned the rear derailleur hanger and adjusted the b-tension screw not sure if those were factors. But I do tend to shift both front and rear derailleurs at the same time as I start the climb, the chain dropped when I did that this morning… any ideas?

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much Sam, appreciate it! Shifting both derailleurs at the same time does increase the chances of the chain dropping. As for adjustments, the angle of the cage is the biggest drop causer. If it’s not parallel but angled in it can push the chain too far. The chain dropper should stop the chain coming off but it’s worth checking the angle to see if it can be improved. Hope this helps. Let me know how the K Edge works. Thanks again!!

    • @samguan5236
      @samguan5236 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JimLangley1 thanks Jim. I got it installed per your instructions and it appears that it will do its job. Just a question though, the way that it’s designed, the top hole does not do anything in terms of fixing the catcher position in place and it’s the bottom bolt that’s fixing the catcher in place.. this design can potentially allow the catcher to move out of position but hopefully it’s been tested that it wouldn’t allow the chain to move the catcher given the bolt is sufficiently tight.

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@samguan5236 I haven’t talked to K Edge about this but I think it’s designed to move if something goes wrong like a stick in the rear derailleur bending the derailleur and chain and then the bent chain wouldn’t jam and throw you over the bars. I think that’s the idea, i.e. in an emergency it’s designed to move. When preventing chain drops it doesn’t get hit too hard by the chain. Lots of racers rely on them and trust them. I hope you like yours.

      Thanks for watching and the question. I don't have an AXS derailleur to show. But here's SRAM's video on installation and adjustment of AXS front derailleurs. Once it's on and adjusted, the K-Edge chain catcher goes onto the AXS derailleur the same way I show on the Shimano Di2 derailleur. It's the same process and chain catcher adjustment. Hope this helps.

      I just build my first ever carbon roadbike and i just saw this video and i might happen to me... so the chain can only fall when the chain is on the largest cog and smaller chainring?

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@emnico6063 congratulations on building your first carbon superbike! Actually the chain catcher is made to stop the chain falling to the inside on whatever cog you're on on the back. The chain doesn't usually fall off but when you shift the front derailleur from the large chainring to the small chainring, that's when things can go wrong - especially if you're pushing like in a race or event and you're trying to stay with other riders on a climb. For example, the chain might be bouncing around a little and you shift onto the small chainring and the chain might come off. If it comes off it can then jam between the frame and crankset sometimes. That's what the chain catcher is for - to add insurance so that if something goes wrong when you shift the chain can't come off. Okay? I hope that explains.
