Why would excessive timing advance make it lean? Also, he needs to hook up the vacuum advance for better mileage at no cost to performance. Even dragsters idle at times and that idle might as well be clean and efficient. If the pulled the vacuum advance off his original distributor it might explain his problem because he could then have retarded his base timing, use the vacuum advance to keep his idle decent, and avoid excessive timing while pulling.

Randy, I love the scamp and wish I could afford to take it off your hands but can’t. As for the engine, either whoever built the engine for your scamp was clueless as to what works together and what doesn’t, or there are tuning issues or the engine is worn out. Whether it’s a 318 or a 340 it should still perform better than it is doing. But, being a flood car, you have to expect there to be lots of issues. Also did you change the gear lube in the rear end? If the engine and transmission had water in them the rear end will too.
Personally I think that year Mustang looks great. When they came out, I was very partial to the 65 to 73 Mustangs. I owned a 65, 66, 68 fastback and a 71 Mach 1 that I loved. My dad bought that for me when I got my drivers license back in 1981. I remember my dad driving it home to my surprise. The body was in great shape but needed paint. The interior was all there but was ripping at the seat bottoms. The biggest thing I remember was the cloud of smoke it left fogged out the neighborhood. He handed me the keys and I went to work on it for days and nights I would be spending any free time I had on it. I even remember prepping the car for paint. I painted it Midnight blue. It looked great but it lasted about a year before fading. I had taken it too Earl Shieb and it cost about 120 dollars. Still it was a babe magnet that attracted every car enthusiast in Thousand Oaks, California. I even was privileged to drive it amongst other hot rods in the parade. That was a blast. Anyway, That little Mustang you have was not all bad. Kind of reminds me of the early to mid 80's Toyota Supra. I can't wait to see this little guy get some restoration. I hope you keep this little gem and see how far the value will go.

I found the channel early on in the Challenger series and man was that a great rebuild. I have to admit, it's been hard to get into your videos since the Challenger ended and you've jumped from short term "will it run" project to the next. I wrote once before when you 1st went to get this car telling you how the Mustang 2 was my 1st car bought before I got my license. I didn't even know how to drive it being it was a standard. I quickly learned. But the irony is the Pinto wagon was my 2nd car. Given to me as a hand me down from my father. It was a dark metallic brown I got it white lettered tires and slotted mags. It was a sharp looking car. I'm 57 now. Your videos are really bringing back some old memories. My 3rd car was a Dodge St. Regis. Will you be bringing that home next? Great videos thanks for sharing.
Really glad you're back on the Cobra ll project again. I think this is a perfect candidate for a Monroe Handler body kit, which would be an awesome video series. Thanks for the cool video update!
I had a 76 Cobra... 302 4 speed. I had 74 Camaro my dad bought me when I turned 16 & I traded it in 3 days later on a 75 Chevelle... 350 4 speed. As it turned out the used car lot where I traded had this 76 Cobra sitting in the back row.. I asked about it after I had my Chevelle & he said, the rear end is out.. I started it & it ran like a dream... Bought it for $300 . Went to a salvage yard , picked one up & had it running the nxt day... I was in hi school (1979) & I had 2 cool cars to drive to school... Loved both cars , but the Chevelle had swivel buckets , AC & cruise , so it was my chic magnet...lol
The wheels really go great with it as do the side exit pipes. I use JB Plastic weld for repairs to plastic parts; have repaired numerous motorcycle covers and even plastic saddle bags. The stuff while smelly when applying, it does go away and the repair is rock solid, might use that to repair the broken bits on the deck spoiler.
such a cool old car! few changes i'd made tho (Not big changes though), I'd fix the lower front valance thats sagging. Wind catches it just right and its coming off lol! I'd go thru and fix all the tail light and fog light lenses....mainly to keep water from getting to the electrical stuff and causing issues. Next, i'd toss on a different hood. One of my fav classic cars is the Crop Duster from Roadkill, i always loved the look of a dark hood on a light colored paint job. Finally, i'd do something with the dashpad. As much as i love the old, wore out look, yours seems to have lived its life and needs to be retired. Maybe find one from a junkyard or a parts car to replace it with so it keeps that vintage look, but is just flat out in better shape. Other than that, I hope to see tons more videos on this car, its freakin awesome!
Never thought I would say "That's a cool mustang/Cobra II" but it happened when I saw the thumbnail. Thats is legit the coolest mustang II I've ever seen.
My first good car I bought was a 78 Mustang Cobra II. That car started my Love for Mustangs and other Ford vehicles. I did sell that car but I sure wish I would have kept it but I was young with a new family and had to let her go. Thanks for saving her, I enjoy watching!!!
Hi Dylan. Im enjoying the series on the '77 Cobra II, since I owned a '76 Cobra II. I received it around 1982 post-college, after a family member drove it about 70K miles. Because it was always in the family, I knew the history of the car well. One thing you should know is that we always had an issue with overheating. If we got caught in traffic with the AC on, we'd watch the temp gauge nervously. There were times when I had to pull off and let it cool down. We tried various things to correct the issue (flushing, hoses, etc), but nothing really changed. It came from the factory with an 8 blade fan, as I recall. If you are going to run it hard, you should know this, since you may need to come up with a solution that the engineers at Ford never really addressed (or knew about). Anyway, I had lots of fun with mine and it turned some heads, although by todays standards it was woefully slow. Your mods are making it into the car I always wanted it to be. Love it and have fun ... and keep up the videos. You put a smile on my face each time I hear it run through the gears now.
You can never go wrong with an HEI. Pulled the points & condenser distro out of my 68 C10 and put in an Accel HEI almost as soon as the truck got to my house.
I owned a 1977 mach. Slightly built 302, 4 speed. Fun car. The gauges would frequently read incorrectly. I thought engine was getting hot but it was the gauge not working properly. The dash gauges connect to a printed circuit on the back of the gauge pod and the plastic was crumbling. Gauges couldn't connect proper.
One of my pigeons is white with those same rust colored spots as this car. I call him Captain Marble. This is not a put down of your car, it's a compliment. The Captain is strong, fast, healthy, and smart. He's a wonderful bird. He's also friendly and funny, and he is a very dear friend. He rocks, same as this car. I just had to laugh when you finished the wash and I saw the resemblance. They both have the same color scheme, and that's cool. ........Cheers!
Thanks for the info in the distributor. I have a '69 block 302 with '68 heads built into a 347 stroker (Lunati Cam) in a '84 Ranger 4x4. Im not looking for speed and had the heads built for torque, but that distributor looks like just what I need. Right now its down waiting for a different cab ( I rolled it almost a year ago). Because of health issues, I havent got to work on it much (I died 3 times in Dec), and am getting back into shape (kinda). I like your video's as they give me hope I can get this Ranger back on the road (its up on 36's and uses a C-6, which is the main reason Im willing to rebuild it anyways). Keep up the great video's as the help keep me going. I will keep watching.
When I swapped the old distributor for a street curved hei on my buick gs I couldn't believe the performance increase. It was the first time the car would chirp all gears and pull like a freight train when dropping the hammer.

The little bug running around the water neck @ 9:55 was priceless. I've owned 9 of those little Cobra II's with one heavily modded for the track and another resto-mod that I seamlessly dropped a 5.0 HO EFI from a 1990 pony donor. Great times my friend!
Great to see a fellow Tennessean doing good ,keep it up man. Go Big Orange !
Dylan I love it that you have some awesome cars, the Charger the Challenger and now your Cobra! Ohhh yeah and that awesome Satellite!
I found the channel early on in the Challenger series and man was that a great rebuild. I have to admit, it's been hard to get into your videos since the Challenger ended and you've jumped from short term "will it run" project to the next. I'm holding out hope that the Cobra II sees some love on the level of the Challenger and gets a full rebuild with upgrades.
CONGRATS ON 500K. It seems like yesterday when you started and I made some crazy comment saying you were awesome and If you just stay yourself your channel will make it. And now you're 500k.
Very nice hope to see more improvements for this beast
A friend in high school had a baby puke green mustang 2. Great memories made cruising around in that thing.
Congrats on 500K! You certainly deserve it. I remember those old 70s Mustangs very well. I went to school with a girl that had 2 of them. A red hatchback and a white coupe. Yours sounds amazing. It must be a blast to drive!
I love this project. It brings me back to when my brother had a 1976 Ford Mustang II Cobra. I loved that car. So fun to cruise around in that thing. Great memories
I love this car 👍. I hope to see future updates on it. Maybe some interior repairs? I think this car deserves a second chance at being great. The spoiler was much needed 😎
I’d love to see it repainted.
....but in a modern color!
Really glad you're back on the Cobra ll project again.
I think this is a perfect candidate for a Monroe Handler body kit, which would be an awesome video series.
Classic Industries in Huntington Beach, CA sells the complete kit.
Maybe reach out to them and see if they're interested in sponsoring the build and/or fund raise thru your social media.
Thanks for the cool video update!
Great episode, and I'm really loving this little hot rod. It looks like a riot to drive. 😁
This is going to be epic!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job dude, love that little Ford! Let me know if you want to sell it to your neighbor in Georgia.
the mysterious case of the disappearing fluid container 4.04
Shape Shifting Lizard? Right headlight is one of them I feel 21:50 its there, then 23:26 its gone again maybe its with the fluid container?
Congratulations on the 500k and please make for content on the Rustang, I mean the Mustang . It sounds killer.
Love your channel I love what you do
I agree Levi
I owned 75 Mustang hatchback, but with the 4 cylinder auto. Loved the car hated the engine. Great seeing your videos! Keep it up.
Just like us all it has flaws but it has fight and character
My folks had several mustangs when i was a kid. Always loved the mustang 2
How about trying something different for this poor car. Repair the body and repaint it. Don’t let it remain a derelict-looking wreck.
That bottom bumper piece makes the mustang look like it’s smiling and happy to be back on the road
the american dream
Again great taste for wheels, spot on, adds so much muscle and sportiness to that car.
Thank you Dylan. I think many things you're doing for this car will cross over to my Maverick.
I've always liked the mustang 2 cobra. Puddin would have been proud of your pressure washing segment. 😆
I remembered when these mustangs were new. What a gem. Thank you Dylan. 😊
Never been a Mustang guy, but there is something about this little guy that I just love. Makes me want to buy one and make a nice cruiser out of it.
Cool car I hope you keep it. I do enjoy your videos, you detail. That makes a difference. Thanks for doing this.
i Would love to see this painted in black primer, would give it a badass look
Good Job. I hated these mustangs growing up but now think they are so cool.
You can never go wrong with an HEI. Pulled the points & condenser distro out of my 68 C10 and put in an Accel HEI almost as soon as the truck got to my house.
This is like my favorite car when I was a kid. I'm so glad to watch it come back from death.
I'm pretty sure this is the coolest cobra I've ever seen.
Really enjoyed this episode!! The mustang kind of reminded me of the Bullitt mustang when you were driving around in it!!
Love cobra 2 mustangs. Nice tire and wheel package. Nice patina! Keep at it Dylan 💪👏
Great job. Pretty cool little car. I think they look good with the side window Luevers on them. Congrats on the 500k
Dylan, great job getting the mang2 running like it should. alittle sanding/alittle clear coat and alot on the inside. SOUNDS GREAT...
Those wheels and tires look great!
Them heavy duty plug wires are sweet @Dylan McCool
I would like to see you continue with restoring and fixing this car up. Keep them videos coming. 👍
The more I see this wonderful Cobra II, the more I wanna own it! It’s such a cool car and what you’ve done to it makes it so much better!
I would like to see even more about this Ford. You have done an excellent job with little budget is incredible.
Congrats on the 500K! This is all you buddy. This is all the result of your hard work and dedication.
That lil’ stang II sounds fabulous. All the new engines do not have that thump rump thump.
I dig that little car. I would probably smooth it out by sanding it and keep it linseed oiled. It's got perfect character just the way it is.
Have owned two Mustang II's. I really liked them and should have kept one because they are hard to find now.
I love this car!!! It's becoming one of my favorites on your channel. That distributor made a night and day difference!!!👍👍👍
I used to hate these mustangs but your build has made it grow on me and now it's one of my favorites
