I am terrified to do this with my fountain pen!

  • I really make sure to fully understand my experience of a pen before I even talk about it on instagram let alone post about it. It's very scary to post a video coming from a place of 0 knowledge!

If you buy a Visconti, you should be terrified to ink it up for the first time.

It was nice to see you go through the process of inking the cartridge directly. You make much less of a mess than I do 🙂

In terms of vintage pens, you still have the full range, from super flexible through bouncy all the way to stiff as a bone, even in gold nibs.

Thanks for doing this first impressions video. It's very helpful and interesting to see your very first experiences with a new pen. Hardly any of us can just buy everything we might want, so this type of video allows us to see what it might be like if we jumped onto the Magna Carta boat. Thanks!

Flex nibs are the ones that force you the most to learn a lot about inks, but they are indeed *so fun*! Yours and Aidan's reviews are definitely put our resolution to stay out of debt to the test... ;-)

I did have a eversharp fountain pen, I put a quick video of it on my youtube a few years ago. I do like vintage flex but not all the time.

Helpful video! I appreciate the review of filling from converter only, and of priming the feed. I will say that you are having with this nib my modern flex nib experience. The Magna Carta flex nib seems only a little better than the FPR flex nib I got a few of years ago. It writes nicely, often. I have not quite reached the level of proficiency with it where I am confident in using it to write a letter. Ink blobs on page, and long wait times for feed to catch up, annoy me. This may be a feature, not a bug. I will say that my experience with the Pineider iperflex nib is better; but it can't compare to the couple of vintage (mid-20th century) nibs I have. But, they best serve a small handwriting style. I'd still say that for an impressive signature, a fine italic cut modern nib serves most reliably.

What a stunning pen. I usually try to match or compliment the pen with the ink I choose. Love Ancient Copper, I use it almost exclusively with my orange Diplomat Aero.
You need an ink miser, allows for fatter pen fills. Me I usually syringe my converters, less mess
This looks like an easy flex writer. I'm not a big flex writer, it takes a lot of practice. I have a few, I like them but let them flex naturally. So I get a little variation but not what they are capable of because it takes more practice than I care to but love the bounciness.
I've thought about the Magna Carta before. After seeing your video, I may consider it even more.

Everybody goes in and out with mental health and self care. I think of self care more as a long-range thing. Even if I skip it for some periods, I always take it up again. It’s really great that you are working out, because by the time you are old you will understand the importance of exercise and have the habit in place.

As much as I would love to have a pen like this, I would like it to perform as well with writing at normal speed in the same manner. I am sure the nib would begin to railroad.
I am not one to do calligraphy but I love a nib that provides line variation. The closest I have come to my goal is with a Pilot Soft Fine nib and is one of my favorite pens. The other pen is a Leonardo Momento Zero Grande with an Elastic nib.
Glad that the nib worked well right out of box.

Gotta wonder why you'd need to heat set an ebonite feed, if it's a well made pen. Wasn't an issue with any vintage pens, really. (Imagine trying to heat set a 1950s Esterbrook ReNew nib unit.😁) Noodler's kinda lowered people's expectations, seems like, as well as other cheaply made pens from that part of the world.
And the name of the ink? Kiowa Pecan is the original name. It's just Pecan, now.
Is this like vintage flex? Pretty darn close. There's the really flexible and wet ones from generally pre 1930 (really flexible pre WWI), but there's some considered vintage flex that could be less flexible.
Magna Carta did come closest to original flexible nibs. No cutouts. Thinner sheet material. Close to many original flexible pens in profile (tends to have longer tines than most, today.)
Haven't used a Magna Carta, yet, but I have owned vintage flex pens from several manufacturers and time periods (1912 through the 1940s.) From what I've seen, the Magna Carta looks close to the later Waterman's flexible nibs, or some of the Sheaffer's Junior ones of the 1930s. Not as flexible and such as my 1912 Mabie Todd (I've accidentally splayed it to around 90° and it didn't spring it,with no railroading even with an iron gall ink until it was at almost 90°) but within the range. 😁

I just fell into the rabbit hole & bought the M660 in Cyanic from Goldspot. OMG it is ever a wonderful pen - as close to the perfect pen as I can imagine! If it is a good representation of the flex vintage pens had, are we ever missing something phenomenal in our modern stiff-nibbed pens! I feel cheated! I’ve never had a vintage pen but I’ve had most of the modern flex nibs & none could hold a candle to this one. I’m running Tom’s Studio Mallard in mine.

A beautiful pen with plenty of flex, but the cost is to steep for my taste. I have at least one vintage pen that will flex with any pressure above just dragging the pen across the paper. From just watching you right with it, it does appear that Magna Carta has come close to that level of flexibility in the nib. For me, I've gone with getting a Fountain Pen Revolution Ultra-Flex nib unit to use in one of my Chinese pens for now.

I’m not a true vintage flex pen user. I only have three flex pens and consider myself to be a novice. However, in my limited experience none of my vintage pens are this soft. My Mag 600 feels like the paintbrush vintage pens are supposed to feel like.
