For your love of the island experience, John does have a brilliant live version with only about 5 musicians, the congas / bongos being the main initial instrument......it is a vocal duet with his loyal backing singer Lisa Edwards.
You really can't go wrong with John. He's a superb vocalist in any setting but always seems to lift even further at live concerts. When on stage it's just so obvious that he loves being there, he loves the audience being there - he's a consummate performer.
My family had just moved to a tropical area of Australia when this song was all over the radio, so mostly it reminds me of lying awake at night in the stinking heat and humidity 😂 But seriously, it's a beautiful song rendered perfectly by a master vocalist ❤
John’s band at the time was the elite of the elite of Australian musicians and singers. His Musical directors were phenomenal as well as the songwriters.
Both of his musical directors have done well since that time, with David Hirschfelder winning a BAFTA for his work on the movie “Shine” and Chong Lim conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for John’s terrific concert at the Opera House. Chong is going to be the musical director for the next Commonwealth Games. a
This is such a beautiful song. One of the songs writers, Ross Wilson, is a very good friend of John's and his songs have featured on many of John's albums. It was originally recorded by Ross's band Mondo Rock. Fundimentally the same but very different arrangments. John is actually a very talented musician as well and knows how best to create arrangements ro best show off his voice. He also worked with one of the best musical directors in David Hershfelder, when this song was recorded so he would have helped influence the arrangment. Either way Ross Wilson often jokes about how he is now laughing all the way to the bank. As John took his song and turned it into a big hit. John also made it popular around the world.. And now lots of other artists have also covered it. To me, it is one of my favourite songs that John sings. It can brighten up my day when I'm in need of a lift ...❤❤❤ Thanks for your insight.
Ha I love that. I heard Eric mccusker on the he's the voice podcast say the same thing about a song he wrote that John recorded paying for the house he was sitting in. Must be a great feeling to know your success fed so many Australian artists.
Thanks for another great John reaction! Love this song - loved it when I was 13 and was playing Whispering Jack on repeat, and still love it today. I think John has pretty much impeccable taste when it comes to choosing songs, I can't think of many of his that I don't like, even though his stuff is not my usually preferred genre! David Hirschfelder would have been John's musical director at this point (and also playing keyboards in the band), he is an Oscar nominated composer who's done quite a few movie scores, and also did all the arrangements for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for John's concerts with them, so it's not surprising that you loved the arrangement so much! John really did surround himself with the best of musicians - as is appropriate given his own phenomenal talent - who were just as passionate about the work as he was, and it really shines through in every performance. A couple of performances I'd suggest - 'Age of Reason' with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - great song, and David does a really nice piano solo in it, that I think you'd enjoy :) and also another from this concert - 'Love's In Need', which is a Stevie Wonder cover, it's done a capella with all of John's band singing, and is quite lovely.
John is the supreme entertainer. He brings everything to his performances. A National Treasure. Ross Wilson is a great songwriter and performer in his own right. Former Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock front man, and still touring and performing as Ross Wilson & The Peaceniks. Cheers from Australia.
"Cold January Day" is such an odd phrase to Australian ears. 😄 Beautiful reaction Nina. I also love the technical assessment - something I'm gathering from watching an embarrassing amount of Farnham reactions is that the people in the know tend to compliment the arrangements and harmonies. This can only be a testament to the quality of the likes of David Hirschfelder and Chong Lim - John's long time Aussie musical directors.
Your commentary is such a delight, providing technical insights to us mere mortal fans of great talent as we become absorbed in just listening to and appreciating the vocal and musical artistry. Thankyou Nina.
As someone who really enjoys listening to music but knows nothing about the technical side I really do appreciate your reactions, I learn so much. This song is my go-to Farnsey when I want some serenity, when my soul needs some rejuvenation. With so many of John's songs I can visualize a scene in my mind, this one is a beautiful tropical island panorama, so calming, so therapeutic. I just love this man to pieces - his songs make my later years so full of renewed life. Feb. '24. UK. E❤
Always transported back to the first time I heard this as a 5 year old in 1990 and instantly falling in love with this song! It’s funny how you mention this is a “warm hug” because this song always takes to a place where I feel safe
Please you really need to do more of John’s epic music, a full playlist, because there’s so much great music of John’s out there. This song is so beautiful and performed to perfection by the entire band and John’s agility is on display again. I think John is the greatest male vocalist of all time. He got everything. Endless range, agility, mic technique, breath control out of this world, passion and emotion, and on and on I could go. But the thing I like most is his unbelievable diction, you can hear and understand every word he sings, which is pretty rare. And John is always having such a great time, he’s just there for the love, the music, his band members and his fans. Awesome reaction to our John.
This song reminds me of a tiny little family shack we had on the beach in Australia, thirty years ago and I would listen to it on repeat at the age of twenty while I could hear the waves crash on the shore. I was tearing up a little as I remembered the rug under my feet and my Mum was still around then and we all used to celebrate summer with John's music in the background as the waves rolled in. Thank you for reviewing John's songs Nina! You always give wonderful technical insights and I love how much you love his singing. It makes me proud that we have such a national treasure in John Farnham. Thank you also to John for his stunning songs and voice.
John is such a great interpreter of the words and soul of each and every song he sings weather it is his own music or a cover song his timing and vocal rang is just superb such a talented gifted singer entertainer cheers
Absolutely. There isn't one Farnsey song I don't love. And not a dud note in any of them. I'm in Wiltshire, south England, about 20 miles north east of Salisbury. 2 days ago, after a day of blue sky with wispy near transparent cloud, the sun settled in to the horizon in the Salisbury direction and the sky above was swathed in red gold ribbons. So you can guess what I was seeing in my head, and, as usual, I had the hugest smile on my face. Any Farnsey song makes me so happy. Feb. '24. UK. E❤.
Such a beautiful performance, his voice and the song make it a touch of paradise. You should check him out singing “wind beneath my wings” live at rugby league grandfinal in 1986, that Bette Midler song which was actually originally written for John
The Backing Vocals of Veneta Fields (a session legend herself), Lyndsay Field, and Lisa Edward’s really compliment John Farnham’s stellar vocal performance
Another great reaction to John from you Nina... thankyou again... yes the tropical bird sound at the end you are referring to is from the lyrics at the start... "Flamingoes walk", and yes Flamingoes are classed as a tropical bird... I'm from Qld, and the further north you go up Qld the more tropical the heat gets, sometimes flamin hot.. and you certainly do see Flamingoes up there...
This is a favourite.... (Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool who wrote this is also a fav)... and we are having a hot couple of days here in Oz so this is appropriate :-)
It's a delight to watch you enjoying the performance with your little moments of nice surprises, lots of smiles and joy. Bravo Nina. I've always loved this song since i was a teen listening to the incredible whispering jack album - so many incredible songs on that album.
Nina I really appreciated your analysis and praise for John’s interval jumps etc. Your repetitions consolidated my learning curve and I’ll now hear those runs every time I listen to this, one of my two favourite ballads by John. The other one is “Burn For You” which he co-wrote. For your information, Steve Williams played that beautiful clarinet solo. His finishing notes were amazing. He’s also a professional music teacher. He’s wonderful on the harmonica too, such breath control. He opens the song “Chain Reaction” and that’s him on the YT video thumbnail. John gives Steve free rein and he shines.. You’d swear that you’re hearing an old train gathering momentum. He also dances around as he plays. His other instrument is the saxophone which he plays on “That’s What Love Will Make You Do”. Everyone gets to play a solo on this terrific RnB/Jazz song. Bob Coassin plays the best cornet solo ever. He’s previously played for Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr! The solo by each section shows what talent there is in this band.
Quality musicians and their tone also bring about the majic of a great song. A quality musician is a good listener, ie they play to make everyone else and the song sound good, not just themselves.
Enjoyable video Nina! This is my favourite John Farnham song; as for a tropical beach I think of Burleigh Heads which is on the Gold Coast. Technically not tropical because it is a few hundred kilometres south of the Tropic of Capricorn; but hey who doesn't love the Gold Coast? For your next John Farnham analysis I would recommend my second favourite song 'Age of Reason' if you haven't done this already.
Thanks Nina. I really love watching your reactions of our beloved Farnsey! I wish you could have seen him live in the flesh... you were definitely taken to a special place each and every concert... that’s what it’s all about! Incredible performer and all round top bloke!
So glad you enjoy my reactions! Oh my gosh I can only imagine actually being there - maybe hologram technology will allow that to be a reality at some point!
Loved your reaction to this, and how you so eloquently unpacked the magic of the song. It's probably one of my Top 5 JF songs, and is always exquisite performed live. The magic is in that beachy vibe, with the 'waves' and the tinkly scales like skipping stones. It's such a contrast to his upbeat songs and showcases John's range so well. 👏
Thank you so much for your reaction, Nina. A fun song by John in his early days was his cover of Long Tall Sally. It really gives an indication of how much vocal power John would develop. Plus, it just a fun song. Greetings from Australia 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
Hi Nina : One of JOHN FARNHAMS special performances live in HIGH QUALITY you absolutely must react to is " IN DAYS TO COME". Special and profound Lyrics with insane vocal arrangement.. To find it YOU TUBE search the following . Search >>>>>. John Farnham - In Days to Come (High Quality)
Get so excited when you post up a John Farnham reaction.... For varieous reasons I can't become a Patron but I'm hoping one will also ask you to do a reaction to a duet performed at The Main Event between John and Olivia Newton John called "Please Don't Ask Me' The vocals, the chemistry and the emotion are flawless. Long time fan of yours dear Nina. HI from Australia

@@ninaschofield My dear Nina, What a lovely thing to do 😘. I am having difficulties with my vision & am slowly losing my sight. So I go day by day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you my lovely are a rare gem. 💝🔹
When you sais tropical birds it reminded me of when I play John Farnham CD the bird Willy Wagtail flys into my yard & sings and danced for the whole CD. They love Farnsy. 🐭🦜🦘🦅
Thank you for this Nina! I love your analysis, I think John throws in some interesting twists musically as well as vocally if that makes sense. There's no song that takes me to another place like this one does. Ross Wilson is an incredible writer. It's funny on the album version you can hear the vocal almost sounds like Ross on one of the lines.
As an insight into John, my nephew was setting up sound for him, going up and down ladders when he turned around and there was John handing him speakers so he didn’t have to climb back down. A truely great guy
Aren’t we glad he slowed down to get the blood back in his face?😂 I love him singing Burn for You for the same reason and he co-wrote it for his wife. Thank you.
You would love his Led Zep cover of their song Black Dog. It hits fast and hard and honestly does Robert Plant justice. It is sound only, and is a sound check and warm up for himself and his band. We got lucky that a sound engineer just happened to hit record in the booth.
I gave this a like but actually, I loved this reaction to a performance from half my lifetime ago to our very own Farnsy. It's great that he's getting new fans who weren't even born at the time of these performances. Also I recommend you check out the extraordinarily talented Tommy Johansson's cover of John's song 'You're the Voice'.
Ross Wilson wrote this and he is probably Australia's best songwriter. This is my favourite song that Ross wrote and they cllaborate on it with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Ross is still tourind Australia ( funny how our best don't seem to want to go International). Nina , these guys/girls really are the best and they know their chops- they're all good . Yeah I got the relative B minor ( to the D ) a tad before you. Love your videos.
Thank you for doing another John Farnham video. There are a few more you could try. "When something is wrong with my baby" with Jimmy Barnes (I prefer the 1991 Australian music awards version), "Please don't ask me" and/or "Dare to dream" with Olivia Newton John, and his covers of "Black Dog" and "It's a long way to the top". I may not be a Patron, but I do check in regularly.
If you can find his old old stuff, mostly black and white film , you see the makings of what was always going to be a superstar. He does an awesome cover of Yesterday.. All old videos are worth a watch.
I feel some credit should go to Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock as the composer. He's a brilliant songwriter. A legend in Australian music since 1970. A craftsman when it came ti writing.
Ome on Nina... If you do 1 Farnsey song per week it would take years to get through them all. Check out DrKap's channel. She has remastered plenty. Save you picking a poor quality clip. (the last one. Not this one)
@briangill4000 Lol, please don't - a lot of those "remasters" sound and look worse than the original videos. I'm sorry, I know the effort and thought is there, but they're just not very well done. They usually have a tinny, echoey sound, and often the background music is muffled and they distort on the higher/louder notes (Yesterday is a great example of both muffling of background and distortion - please, close your eyes and listen to it, and hear all of the digital artifacts at the edges of the notes the band are playing, it's so distracting. The original video is old, but the sound is fine, the "remastered" version is far worse). Yeah, on the surface they sound "clearer", but it's at the expense of warmth and depth, and comes with distortion and weird digitised sounds in the background. I'll stick with the originals, and I hope reactors do too.
In case you'd like to hear it sung by the guy who wrote the song, Ross Wilson, a legend Australian music scene in his own right. . (There is also a clip of John and Ross performing it together..) th-cam.com/video/HtZSx_bXlN8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TF2HLi2gDf7tvetn
Hi there.. if you see this try listening to let me out from the whispering Jack I'm sure you will enjoy.... Loving your channel.... All the best from Brisbane Australia 🦘
Nina, you mentioned how you loved the vocal of everyone singing. Yes, all of Johns band can hold a note. To see exactly how well you need to react to Johns cover of Stevie Wonders Love's in Need, from the same concert and make sure you watch the intro for his audience interaction, so good. This is the YT link. Enjoy. th-cam.com/video/9m8-dc6FlCI/w-d-xo.html
Hi Nina, I've seen a few of your reactions now about our national treasure John Farnham which I always enjoy, could I suggest to you to look at another genre that maybe a bit different to you, but I think you will enjoy. Look up Oceans by Hillsong United and do a reaction/critique of that please.
John's mic technique is perfect. He will sometimes hold it a good foot from his mouth just to modulate his power. Compare that to most singers who hold the mic CLOSER to manufacture fake power.
In fact its not, this song has something that many of Johns songs have, i think you could say touch of Australia, but i think you have to hear Australia to know it. The original people here did have their own style of music and i found that in many of Johns songs its not hard to pick, if you listen to the voice, the very start of which is the sound of clap sticks gto well known aboriginal sound. I think this is one of tbe reasons these songs go down so well is that somewhere along the line we all get to feel that sound and where it comes from. I am certainly not sure that weather or not it was done on purpose, but i get the feeling thar it wa just something that made the music homely, but it certainly does sound good!!!!
No it isn’t - a clavinet is a keyboard - Stevie Wonder is most associated with it. If you meant clarinet it isn’t a clarinet either- it’s a straight soprano saxophone.
Hi Nina, I was working on Hayman Island QLD back in 2000 and before I left the Photographer on the Island put a video together for me to remind me of my time there and the theme music she used was this song and it really did blend in beautifully with the tropical paradise that is Hayman and the Whitsundays.
This felt like a warm hug 🤗

Thank you so much for your reaction, Nina. A fun song by John in his early days was his cover of Long Tall Sally. It really gives an indication of how much vocal power John would develop. Plus, it just a fun song. Greetings from Australia 🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
I like that song, I really do too. Thanks John & Nina for your reaction & especially for the analysis because I learn so much.❤
I’m so glad! Thanks so much for watching 😊
'In Days To Come' is one of my favourites. Who am I kidding? Every song sung by John is one of my favourites. He is the ultimate greatest of all time.
When you speak of waves, it sounds like fluidity to me.💖
Get so excited when you post up a John Farnham reaction....
I appreciate your support on here so much! ❤ You’re welcome to join as a free member of my Patreon for the time being if you’d like to be part of the crew there, but no pressure at all my friend 😊
@@ninaschofield My dear Nina, What a lovely thing to do 😘. I am having difficulties with my vision & am slowly losing my sight. So I go day by day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you my lovely are a rare gem. 💝🔹
Fab Nina! Love the reaction inc. all the musicality you show. D
When you sais tropical birds it reminded me of when I play John Farnham CD the bird Willy Wagtail flys into my yard & sings and danced for the whole CD. They love Farnsy. 🐭🦜🦘🦅
John Farnham - It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll) Classic Jack Live
He sings wind beneath my wings at the NRL 1986. John is amazing
Thank you for this Nina! I love your analysis, I think John throws in some interesting twists musically as well as vocally if that makes sense. There's no song that takes me to another place like this one does. Ross Wilson is an incredible writer. It's funny on the album version you can hear the vocal almost sounds like Ross on one of the lines.
i was 6 when this came out and i do remember it! :D
Best musical reviewer
As an insight into John, my nephew was setting up sound for him, going up and down ladders when he turned around and there was John handing him speakers so he didn’t have to climb back down. A truely great guy
That’s so cool to hear!
Aren’t we glad he slowed down to get the blood back in his face?😂 I love him singing Burn for You for the same reason and he co-wrote it for his wife. Thank you.
If seen him live and he’s amazing. ❤❤❤
I'd say he's the best male singer in the world, that's just my point
It all so show you the great talent of the writer this song. Ross Wilson of Mondo Rock/ Daddy Cool fame in Australia.
John is the ultimate performer. Ross Wilson is a great songwriter and singer.
I never saw a mullet with a Farrah Fawcett flip. Beautiful voice
you just gotta love a music nerd, espescially a very pretty one ? You just have to listen to Burn for you ,epic.
There is also "Grenada" with Anthony Warlow
If you can find his old old stuff, mostly black and white film , you see the makings of what was always going to be a superstar.
He does an awesome cover of Yesterday.. All old videos are worth a watch.
John sings The Reason Why, co-written by Richard Marx; during the 1994 ARIA Awards, while performing in Canberra with Richard Marx on piano.
I haven't got a clue what you are on about Nina but, i really like watching ya. 😅😅😅😅😅
I feel some credit should go to Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock as the composer. He's a brilliant songwriter.
A legend in Australian music since 1970. A craftsman when it came ti writing.
Cool. More Farnsey.
A suggestion would be John Farnham singing Imagine with Ray Charles in your Farnsey journey.
AGE OF REASON. The Melbourne Concert.
In case you'd like to hear it sung by the guy who wrote the song, Ross Wilson, a legend Australian music scene in his own right. . (There is also a clip of John and Ross performing it together..)

Hi there.. if you see this try listening to let me out from the whispering Jack I'm sure you will enjoy.... Loving your channel.... All the best from Brisbane Australia 🦘
Dear Nina nice reaction as usual! I suggest you to check JELUSICK / PORTNOY / HOEKSTRA - Jane!
Keep up the hard work! 🤘
I’d like to hear sing a version of this song Nina.
A song that you should react to from a young john farnham is Long Tall Sally..
I hadn't noticed the violins at the end sounding like birds.
Check out Ross Wilson: Mondo Rock, Daddy Cool, single performer
It may have been close to midnight hence the 14th or 15th.
Farnham is the Goat, but I’d LOVE to hear you do some David Phelps
You can't deny it By Lisa stansfield , music video version please 😊 reaction request please
Do "Reasons" plz.
Realise time is an illusion Nina, so is it back in time? I think not.
You might not know this Queen asked him to take Freddie Mercury place he said No so that what he told me
A better version where John sings the gorgeous high notes of this song - th-cam.com/video/DpACAUcy_q4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FFB9kMHwOfr7WCLz
Try his songs amazing grace angels and playing to win all live versions of course
I’ve done Amazing Grace which you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/PAEws_o6m7A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ntcW_fqq4BddWxfu definitely got more on the way 😊
Now if you do the sing angles the version with singer Lisa don't Remember last name
It's a clavinet
No it isn’t - a clavinet is a keyboard - Stevie Wonder is most associated with it. If you meant clarinet it isn’t a clarinet either- it’s a straight soprano saxophone.
Damn it your right, but the woodwind is brass version of a clarinet or oboe, not sure what its called now
Baker Street uses the same instrument ,I think
Steve Williams!@@Dr_KAP
@@jeffwilson7100 lol you know I thought that but my concert dvd said otherwise so I went with that 😂
It always reminds me of whales sounds during the music and last bit so noticeable
Sounds like whales screaming out to each other
Cheers 🦘🇦🇺👍
I see that once you go down the Farny rabbit hole it is hard to get out ?Such a cute music geek.?
Please reaction one ok rock -clock strike luxury disease 2023
Hi Nina, I was working on Hayman Island QLD back in 2000 and before I left the Photographer on the Island put a video together for me to remind me of my time there and the theme music she used was this song and it really did blend in beautifully with the tropical paradise that is Hayman and the Whitsundays.
Beautiful song that would have been better if you had of waited till the end to do your critique then went over what you wanted to
That would just get copyright strike.
Leave your reactions at the END OF SONG. PLEASE!!
Why? I love Nina's reactions, breaking them down as it goes along. Please keep as is Nina, they are perfect.
Love the song but you sadly butchered any appreciation of it with the insessant interruptions.😢
