I’ve only just found this channel and love it!!! I recently made it my goal to travel to as many art museums as possible in my lifetime. Have been to several in Europe so far and just went to the Met in New York this year. Keep up with these videos!
I live in fort worth tx and I cannot get enough of the Kimbell, a world class museum, I spent 2 years in Europe, thanks to my uncle Sam, and my favorite was one in Munich, I spent 3 days in awe,

Thanks for these videos. If the general public know the stories behind these works I believe they would take more interest in art. To many now these are just “old painting” of a bygone era. This is appreciated.
Great video. David is such an interesting artist living in turmoil. I watched other videos about this painting and all have such different takes on the moral dilemma and subject matter. Thanks for your clear view on this important work.
Thank you so much for this! What an interesting story! David certainly choses to depict his friend Marat as a martyr of the revolution. By devoding it of any other elements which must have been present in the room, the scene is quite theatrical and Marat is depicted in a way that - as you mentioned - reminds us of Christ
I've studied this painting a number of times and each time I learn more... like you said it's a very messy period of history, but you made it very clear indeed!!! Of course I know the copy in the Louvre but I will make a point of seeing the original this coming week!! Great video, as usual Carel!!
Another great video...it's so strange that his face looks almost to be smiling. As a child I remember being horrified by this scene at Madame Tussaud's waxworks...he looked much less peaceful then!
Yes, If I remember correctly, they left the knife in his chest at madame tussaud's. It was made much more gory. in this painting he was supposed to be almost majestic.
It's peculiar to see David's skill and artistic talent employed in something which turns out to be propaganda of a rank sort. It appears to be inspired by David's great, and earlier, Death of Socrates, but the two men couldn't be more different. What did Marat do that in any way helped his suffering fellow citizens? Agreeing with a list of "enemies of the state" that are to be quickly guillotined without a trial poisons the man's life and legacy. Ironically, David painted the most memorable portrait of Napoleon, (Crossing the Alps), a leader who outlawed the singing of the Marseillaise because he feared its power to provoke another blood-soaked revolution.

Rococo was an interruption in art. Pretty, cute, sexy and a waste of time.
