The worst part is, Americans continue to believe what they do even after they've been told numerous times.
The amount of Americans that still think Britain means England, and the Union flag is the English flag, is astonishing.

I always find it so insulting that Americans say they love the history we have in Europe, they have nothing like that. Well, the truth is they do. America, like Europe, was repopulated after the last age. There is also evidence that America was populated before the end of the last ice age. America has a human history going back more than 20,000 years, so they have as much history as Northern Europe and the UK. The insulting thing is they try to ignore the fact that this would be Native American history. On no, we can't have that can we, anything before the 16th Century does not exist in the mind of most Americans, in fact we are lucky if they acknowledge anything before the formation of the USA in 1776.

I think when they refer to history, it's the more tactile, human produced variety. In so much as buildings or "recent" history". If they can touch a building, then it's history. Whereas reading about it in a book, post ice age stuff, you can't touch it or see it, then it doesn't count. If you can walk around Pompeii or the Colosseum, then it's history. The Barringer Crater in Arizona, not man made, too old, not history. A very specific view of history, narrow and blinkered.

Hmmm I get your point but I don't quite agree: when the settlers invaded a "brand new" continent, combatting the people that had been living there for hundreds of years before them (mostly nomadic tribes, thus not having built much in hard, long-lasting materials), they couldn't possibly embrace these tribes' culture as their own! Our friend Connor is not, to our knowledge, a descendant of a Native American!
However, since these settlers were mostly Europeans, our European culture is theirs too. When their great-great-... grand'parents left Europe, they couldn't embark their cultural artefacts, castles, cathedrals, etc. in their baggage. What boggles my mind is that they seem to have erased the History of where they came from. It seems to me that such European History too should be taught in American schools, as being their roots.
But, as you say, if they can't actually TOUCH the artefacts, they can't relate to what they represent ... That is quite sad.

I've taught (16-y-o) English kids who had just as little knowledge of Europe - OK, these were not predicted high grades. Imagine living within 100 miles of the Channel Tunnel and not knowing it even exists. There's no need to feel smug; we might be behind the US in the race to eejitdom, but we're on their heels.

What always surprises me is the fact you have the access to the entire internet for information!
Have many Americans not seen Google Earth!

@@twittlypoo Again, that's not unique to the US. I'm not defending ignorance, but trying to point out there's a lot more of it about on this side of the Atlantic than we realise.

Connar, Yes. You are right about the East cost of the USA, and the West coast of Austria fitting together. All of the continent used to be part of a single huge continent that existed before the movement of the tectonic plates is called ‘Pangaea’. It formed around 335 million years ago and began to break apart about 200 million years ago.
Since then the movement of magma under the Earth’s surface have moved the continents further apart. But 335 million years ago they were one huge continent.
It is also the reason why species of animals and plants ‘evolved’ into separate and distinct forms on each of the continents about 200 million years ago.

      Oof almost
      Austria doesn't have a coast.
And you meant Australia, but Aus wasn't connected to the USA in Pangea, USA and west Africa were.
