    I really liked this ending for two main reasons. First, it shows that Snake did have humanity left in him even after all he had been through. Two, it shows that at the end of the day, politicians care for nothing more than their own agenda and gain, no matter what the cost.

    • @jcdentonmj12
      @jcdentonmj12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Thanks for this. Way to many people thinks this ending solidifies snake as an edgy nihilist. When in fact they couldn't be further off the mark. Snake took a stance against what he realized was a fundamentally corrupt country that didn't care about it's people. He could have let 1999 American Imperialist hellworld have it's peace, and he chose not to. That is not fucking nihilism

      The most unamerican ending ever... John Carpenter is a genius and has two gigantic balls.

    • @spb7883
      @spb7883 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      All you have to realize when considering the meaning of this ending is that Carpenter wrote the screenplay in the mid-70s. Snake is - symbolically- a Vietnam vet who is throwing away the excuses politicians gave for a bogus war. Carpenter’s intent is all over the film, despite it being made years after it was written. In its cynicism, in its antiauthoritarianism, this is arguably the last notable film of the 70s, paradoxically so given it’s an 80s film.

    Definitely one of the coolest movie endings of cinema history. Just seeing Snake tear that tape cassette up demonstrating how little shit he gives made him look more like a bad-ass. This awesome theme playing wad the icing-on-the-cake. Way da go John Carpenter.

      Whoever did the casting for John Carpenter in his prime filmmaking days always did an incredible job picking great actors for the right parts creating incredible performances. It all started with the original Halloween, they struck absolute gold casting Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance, with Nick Castle doing a phenomenal job as the shape during the film's climax.

    When Snake asks the President how he felt about all these people sacrificing themselves so he could be here to give his speech and sees that the President's reaction is inhumane and without compassion, that's when Snake Plissken decides to destroy the tape.

    • @Beowulf95
      @Beowulf95 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep, depending on the answer he would have given the president the real tape. the fact that the president answered the way the cynical snake thought he would, that was when he made up his mind to humiliate the fucker. He turned down the job to work for the man and humiliated the president in front of the world while walking away with a smoke, tearing up a cassette of nuclear fusion that could have had great benefits to the world but under the hands of these "men" in charge would have been used to enslave people and cause endless war with no purpose

    Future MLB pinch hitter extraordinaire Matt Franco is credited here as "assistant to the assistants." Matt is the son of producer/second unit director Larry Franco and the nephew of star Kurt Russell. Kurt's sister Jill is Matt's mother. Matt was also a certified stunt man in Hollywood before he established himself as a professional baseball player.

    • @thestrawman100
      @thestrawman100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad someone else noticed this. Matt is the son of producer/second unit director Larry Franco, who at the time was married to Jill Russell, Kurt's sister. So he was the producer's son and the star's nephew. He made a name for himself a decade later as a pinch hitter in MLB with the Cubs, Mets, and Braves. He was a member of the Mets during the Bobby Valentine years and was on the 2000 team that won the NL pennant. That's why Kurt became a Mets fan. Matt was also in the playoffs with the Mets in 1999 and the Braves in 2002 and 2003. He is the all-time leader in walks by a pinch hitter, I believe. Kurt temporarily retired from acting to play professional baseball, too, but he didn't make it past AA before he returned to acting full-time.

      Yeah, and it just now occurred to me how non-chalant and unappreciative the President was even after being saved from such a predicament. And after he had stopped that cable lift just to get his revenge against the "Duke" even when he would have still had time to shoot and kill him without stopping it. And I think that's the main reason why Snake resented him for putting his own life in jeopardy by doing that, so there was really some innuendo right at the end? And the fact that the actor's name was DONALD...?!?!

    • @CaptWalker

      The 2nd audio commentary track on the U.S. SE DVD features producer Debra Hill and she said that the flag is orientated to connote that this is a fascist state - just in case it wasn't apparent during past 90 odd minutes! This means you could construe it as Plissken turning his back on a failed, fascist society.
