The released version on Perhaps has Eddi Reader (latterly of Fairground Attraction) as his singing partner. Martha Ladly (Martha and the Muffins) sang backing/played keyboards prior to Perhaps being recorded.
Well, the version I've got is the bird from Martha and the Muffins, but in hindsight, it seem Lennox is the dame. Fair doos Annie. I can't believe I still greet at Billy's records. It's been ages now, and I still get terribly upset when I play his stuff. I doubt I'll ever get over it really. Jay "Julie" Bruce (Nee Young), (Peterhead, Aberdeenshire).
There are several versions recorded at the time ("Perhaps" took years to record and redo) - the final one that ended on the album is done with Eddi Reader (who was actually working with Eurythmics earlier in the 80s as their backing vocalist). While her delivery is just as top-notch on the final album cut, Annie Lennox would have been the finest choice - however, she was sadly prevented to contribute due to contractual obligations with RCA - there is an interesting mention in Billy Mackenzie's biography about the encounter, describing Annie as too cool to deal with or something :) But at least we have this gorgeous demo of what might have been. The two would definitely bring the best of it. The other two, equally interesting versions of "The Best Of You" featured Martha Ladly, as mentioned here + one was done with Gina X.
Even with gods and godesses, there's no saving a turkey. For me, this is a bit better than the Eddi Reader version but it's no 'Skipping' or 'Kitchen Person'.
Thanks for sharing this gem
Annie and Billy. what comination!....miss Billy :(

Kitchen Person is one of the most deranged songs I've ever heard, i love it
