Saturday Night Wrist: The Album that (Almost) Broke Deftones

  • The beauty and aggression that characterizes Deftones' music almost perfectly matched the emotions in the band. Saturday Night Wrist was no exception but the creation of this album was at the apex of what the band called their "dark days."
Deftones as a band, for a moment in time, was done.

I remember when hole in the Earth came out as their leading single. That’s gotta be rough to hear your band on the edge of breaking up all over the radio stations at the time. His line about hating all his friends really stood out and him being out, done with it. Glad they stuck around for all the great music to come later. Snw still has some of my all time favourites like xerces and kim dracula.

i ididn't really care for the ST album when it came out, aside from anniversary, so the band kinda dropped of my radar. i remember hearing "hole..." on the radio the first time and thought wow this sounds a lot like the deftones then realized it was and i got really excited. i think snw may be my favorite album of theirs. it doesn't quite capture the magic of wp but imo it comes real fucking close.

    @jaybles0999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

14:09 Damn, do I really know that feeling. Every time I listen to the title track of Ohms, it still breaks me. When it came out in august, I instantly made the personal connection that the lyrics are about reflecting on a loved one passing on. “It’s too late to cause a change in the tides…” “We slip into our hopeless sea of regret” “We promise to meet again somewhere”… “Time won’t change this.” Every time I hear this song I still cry like a bitch.
The day the album dropped, my friend and I were listening through the album for the first time, in awe. I could tell it something special by them on the first listen. Just as the title track was about to transition from Headless, my other friend who was lagging ass walked in the door. I instantly could tell something was wrong.
Before he came in, he just got a call that two of our good friends, one he was dating at the time, were in a really bad car wreck. One of them died on impact, and his girlfriend was in critical condition. I could never hear ohms the same way again. I miss you so much Aria and Sophie ❤️❤️
A couple weeks after all that, I came back from a party and found my cat behind the couch covered in blood. Blood kept coming out of his penis, and I had to watch him deteriorate over the next few hours until the vets near us opened. When I brought him in there was nothing they could do… I had to make the decision to put him down right there. Nordica was such an amazing soul, gone far too soon ❤️
Everything from that month completely destroyed me. Ohms helped get me through one of the darkest times of my life. Thank you for everything Deftones ❤️❤️
And thank you for making this. You made an extremely high quality video, you deserve a lot more views! I hit that subscribe button 🤘🤘

Deftones is such a beautiful band with a unique sound. Their music reminds me a lot of Salvador Dali paintings with frustration, chaos, questioning of human existence, yet beauty also. Their reach is fantastic and that's why I love the Deftones Vault: B-Sides and Rarities album so much. Ohms has been a fantastic new album from them that shows they still are making awesome music. "Ceremony" is amazing.

So i would take my walkman and sit in the smoke pit and listen to the album. Thats what i think of when i hear snw. I really connected with this album because it feels really dark, like there was a lot of shit coming out in it. It has a sense that this was the pain that had to be exorcised before they could move forward and I could feel it and I enjoyed the frustration I heard and felt throughout it. It just feels way more raw and vulnerable than any other release in my opinion and I’m so grateful to have this album to listen when I feel I’m getting unstable, like a therapy session that can help release those demons and help the light come back.

Hole in the Earth is literally Chino melting down off that shit and blaming everybody else, and the rest of the band rolling their eyes and dope slapping him into getting his shit together, by making even this ridiculous bitchfit into a classic! Rapture is them coming back together and pushing through their shit as a single force, and Beware is Chino committing his lowest point to memory as he swears off everything that lead them there... It's literally The Death and Rebirth of Deftones, all in these three songs.
Defrones has an undefeated streak of classic albums. Even their early shit still slaps, when you need to turn tf up Adrenaline and Around the Fur still get you there faster than anything else from that era!

We all just sat quietly and listened to the whole record, then spent the next two hours going back over each track and having a lively discussion. My dark days were the same as theirs. I feel I went through it with them because their music was always there for me and made sense to me.
My darkness was not from drugs but from being married to an absolute gorgeous narcissistic sociopath who did unspeakable things to my son and I. We had a baby a year after we married and he was born deaf and with special needs. I have had full custody of him for twelve years now. She literally left the country and abandoned our son completely after I got physical custody of him and we haven't heard from her since.
Whenever I listen to music it immediately takes me right back to a specific period of time and/or a memory. Cherry waves and Xerces are two of my absolute favorite songs!

Beware, Cherry Waves, Xerces, Rivière & Hole In The Earth are the best songs on the album even though I love the whole project. I love the echoey drumming before Chino’s verses in Cherry Waves, Chino’s raspy yet soothing tone in the song, and how the riff just flows with the waves along with the parts that add tension with the faster drumming & “dirty” guitar sound and the detailed atmosphere with the background sounds. Xerces has this groove to it where it feels like everything is slowing down and melting in time besides Abe, giving you this sense of just barely staying in touch with reality until the chorus. When the chorus comes in, it’s as if time is still moving slowly but the memories are flashing in your head and you’re having sensory overload. Beware’s intro would make you think a moshpit is about to open. The fluctuating tension of Beware gives a literal sense of danger coming and I like how it reminds of the Jaws track while talking about dangerous waters. The ending speaks for itself. Absolute madness

SNW is brilliant. The beautiful thing about Deftones for me is that their albums shift for me in which ones I favor. One year my favorite record is ATF and the next it’s KNY so and so forth. Deftones are in my top 3 favorite bands. What an unbelievable run they’ve been on.

I went to several Deftones concerts in my life, the one I went to that had a double show back to back days, on the final day I was jamming out by mimicking Stephen's guitar riffs and at the end of the concert, Stephen literally clasped hands with me and gave me his guitar pic. I still have it and made it into a necklace.
I was front row, and 99% of everyone was focused on Chino. I spent the entire first day of the concert focused on Chino too, but that second day was all about my love for guitar. Cool fact too, the first day of the concert me and Chino literally had identical knee high socks lol.

Been a fan of Deftones since around the fur but drifted away from them over the years and are rediscovering them now. Back in the day there was no iTunes so even if you liked a band you maybe never even heard all their stuff cause most people couldn’t afford to buy every CD. So I’m enjoying listening to everything after White Pony and am mad at myself for not listening sooner. SNW is so different from but it’s great

Omg, I have searched for this pic after all of these years! @9:19. Back when i weighed just 108 lbs and rode a Honda 125cc race dirt bike all over mountains and sand dunes in Washington State, I carved this photo onto the side of my bike faring when I was into "Change". My really good friend Deana and I head-banged to that song. haha! Now years later, I"m a Caregiver and she is a RN. She still goes to concerts in Seattle. Deftones is touring and I didn't get to go in April of '22 even though I asked to go for my birthday (March). All I got was a birdhouse. My dream of seeing Deftones LIVE for the first time was crushed. I will probably die never seeing Chino or Johnny Depp sing on planet Earth before I die.
