Train stations done right? Chicago

  • With such an old transit system what could Chicago have to teach us about making and maintaining transit stations? From new bus terminals, dedicated lanes for bikes, pedestrian signalization, station comfort and beyond. The windy city has a lot going on in its stations

    I’m so glad a transit channel made a video focusing on the so often overlooked Chicago systems. RM Transit hasn’t even done an “explained” on it.
    One thing to note, Chicago also some electrified commuter lines and the south-shore line that is an electric inter-urban line that goes into Indiana all the way to South Bend’s Airport.

    One item missing- the water taxi just outside Olgivie. Great, quick way to get to Michigan Ave via the Chicago River

    Great video, I had a long-distance connection through Union Station earlier this year on a trip with my dad. We both appreciated being able to walk to our hotel without paying for a cab or even a CTA ticket. The city is a huge contrast to stations I've visited in other cities, like Savannah or Charleston. What was your favorite Chicago station?

      I have a strong preference for the original EL stations, just love being on a wood deck above the street. Really think we need more elevated trains in the US on roads that are not 8 lane wide stroads, but it's a hard sell. A station like Ashland with its victorian station house has to be up in my top.

      @@UrbanJerseyGuy I also love the feel of those stations, although I will always be partial to the station house of Union. I have some great memories in there...not including the time I was taken out on an Ambulance stretcher...

      @@UrbanJerseyGuy I think that the only real issue with the current el is the noise and some of the track geometry, otherwise, build it. Also, it can get a little dark below...

    The L not being directly connected to Union and Ogilvie is a missed opportunity imo.

    The two larger stations you featured (Union and Oglivy, the former Northwestern station) were purposely not connected years ago by Chicago business tycoons who wanted people to have to stop, get off trains to shop, eat and often stay at hotels rather than continuing on in either direction. Chicago is the rail hub of US and helped fuel growth. The L also is a subway line near Union Station too, near downtown can connect to other lines as well as electric trains and last interurban in US (South Shore trains to Indiana)

      Thanks! Getting a better hang of video editing, so I'll definitely be able to make more in less time. Also have a bunch of B-Roll filmed for the next couple videos.

    Huh? 5:10 Differently abled? Why not just say disabled? Fewer syllables.

    • @UrbanJerseyGuy
      @UrbanJerseyGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Simply because disabled means "cannot do something" while differently abled means "can do something but in a different way"
