This movie is a master class in how to direct children. Most directors treat kids with kid-gloves which results in muted performances, but not Richard Donner. He didn't abuse or cursed out the kid, but Donner would often yell out directions or use reverse-phychology to get an emotional reaction. Fun Fact: Richard Donner and Harvey Bernhard asked Alan Ladd Jr., then the head of Twentieth Century Fox, for extra money during the film's post-production period to hire composer Jerry Goldsmith. They strongly felt that his music was right for the movie, after seeing him perform a live concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles earlier that year. Ladd was finally talked into giving Donner and Bernhard around $25,000 to hire Goldsmith, who would deliver his first and only Academy Award win for his score in 1977. Donner credits the success of the film to Goldsmith's score, which increased the tension and fear of the movie.
Ironically, Harvey Stephens (Damien Thorn) was never told he was involved in making a horror movie. The climactic smile at the camera was 'achieved' by the director being off camera and 'warning' Harvey not to laugh. My favorite portion of the film involves the photographer and the discovery and discussion of each mysterious 'mark' in the photographs.

I watched this movie back in 1980/1, I was 13/14... I went to bed that night with a wooden cross on my bedside table, scared me so much... This is one of my favourite horror movies.
Thankfully I was able to experience these films in the 70's . " The Omen, The Exorcist, Rosmary's Baby, Carrie, " the age before the slash, and kill all teenagers trend.
Mad Magazine did a parody of this film. In it, the President who took custody of Damian was Nixon. There are 2 sequels to this film. There are also parts 4 and 5 that were only paperback novels.
I've watched many other reaction posts for this same movie. I appreciate Laura's unique and intelligent insights here, which raises this post above many others.
Fun fact the original Damien made a cameo appearance in the remake as a photographer and also was a consultant on giving advice for the young lads parents playing him in the remake
Can we talk about how the priest just stood there watching the lightning rod fall down on him instead of simply stepping out of the way? I know it's one of those questions we're not supposed to ask.
You mentioned that the movie takes place with well to do and influential people (U.S Ambassador) People in these positions usually move up in politics, thus gaining more influence. Where else would Satan desire his child to be? Not much influence in the slums. That is why so many religious people get nervous when there is talk of a Global standard or a Global court or a huge concentration of power (Like the E.U that not only is an economic conglomeration but because of free movement without immigration needs, standardized laws that member countries MUST adopt stripping them of a lot of autonomy.). The Antichrist is supposed to gain global influence or leadership.
When this movie comes out ,my brother was six years old and we lived in the address Pellegrini 666 and my mother used to tell me that my father start to look my brother in a suspicious way after seen this in the movie theater in Argentina
This, The Exorcist, and Poltergeist are sais to be cursed movies, as most of the cast and crew got into unexplained accidents before and during filming.
I love the Soundtrack! Damien is such a lovely child. It is quite peculiar as well, the boy looks a lot like the actor in Damien II. Damien is meant to grow into a family of Power and Influence, so that his journey to Power will be as easy as possible.
He's not the same actor in Damien: Omen II. The actor in the second movie is named Jonathan Scott Taylor. He has not been in the acting business since 1988. I would like to know whatever happened to him, and what he looks like now.
6:28 That is part of why he was cast. Director Richard Donner told him "Attack me" and the kid went for the stones 9:17 Lee Remick's reaction wsa real 17:20 The eyes...wow, they said so much with so little
9:15 To be fair the little bastards used to do this to cars that didn't have the AntiChrist in them, I can tell you that from experience. It was filmed at the old Windsor Safari Park which is now Legoland UK.
'666' is considered the sum of a numerical identity, for the Devil's visible servant on Earth, from Revelation 13:18, usually accepted as an encodement of the name of the Roman Emperor Nero.
the first two sequels to this film The Omen 2: The Rise of Damian (1978) and The Omen 3: The Final Battle (1981) are good in relating events of the Antichrist to the events of the Bible.
As an older gentleman, I can say that this was quite the scare to movie goers in the seventies. As with the Exorcist, this film quite unnerved the viewers. In the seventies, there was a big resurgence of apocalyptic feelings and the rise of cults. This fed into that and may have exasperated those fears. Also, there are some fascinating stories about "The Curse" on the film. There were a number of accidents during the production and there were even some deaths. Creepy stuff. Some people believe this film and Poltergeist may have been cursed films. Great reaction. You are doing a great job. Keep up the work.
7:45 It's interesting that you pointed how comfortable the setting is for this to be a horror movie: nice couple, great wardrobe, luxury and comfort, etc. I was around when the Omen first came out in 1976. To this day, I have always felt that the Omen is a "comfort" horror movie (as well as nostalgic). Another TH-camr said the move was "cozy" and gave a feeling of "comfort".
All these religious horror films were the trend back in the 60's-70's with the hippy movements, actual real secret satanist cults and the conspiracies back then. These kinds of films (Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, The Omen) scared the shit out of people and actually got them flocking back to church and reading the bible lol. Fear really is an interesting tool isn't it? But yeeah what made these films great was how real they were. They actually took their time getting you into the characters. Watching their everyday lives, reminding you that these are actual people. I mean when was the last time you actually cared about the cute romantic relationship between a horror movie couple? Heck they even got you feeling kinda bad for Damien and he's the devil lol. They really made you believe this boy was their son they've loved and raised for 5 years which makes Robert trying to kill him all the more dark and tragic. The Omen is probably one of the few in the bunch where the supernatural aspect is vague or subtle enough for everything in the film to possibly just be pure coincidence. Leaving you with a story about the descent of a man losing everything, going crazy and through his grief blames and kills his young adopted son. The other two films (RBaby and TExorcist) are more heavy with its supernatural, but they still remain grounded with its world and character building. Compare that to most (not all) hollywood supernatural horror films nowadays where stories follow the same formulas over and over, the horror has been simplified to just cheap jumpscares so they don't leave lasting impacts anymore, and the characters are nothing more than usual cliche archetypes and plot devices to the point they don't even feel like real people anymore so you don't care as much and are only interested in seeing their deaths. Sad sight really.

I agree. I think the horror in Damien: Omen II was more graphic than in this one. The most graphic scene in this movie was Jenning's decapitation scene. In fact, that scene almost earned this movie an X rating.
You simply MUST watch the 2nd movie of the trilogy now , called 'Damien , Omen II ' which in my opinion is even better and the best one in the trilogy!
Gregory Peck is also good in a 1959 film "On The Beach" based on the Australian 1957 novel by Nevil Shute, though to be honest I like the 2000 mini-series with actual Australian actors more than the 1959 film, but I'm glad both exist.
To me this is the ultimate horror film. the two sequels aren't too bad, but this is a classic Weirdly the number of the best isn't 666, it's 616. As a fun counter point to this you should watch "Good Omens" by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaimen. (excellent book as well)
@@shadowking9739 Definitely! I had wondered for years who would play the parts if it ever got made. Seems they were tailor made for the roles. :) incidentally... I saw this morning that they're starting a sequel! and they're both back.
Damien was borne of a jackal, which is a feral dog, hence the animal skeleton in the grave with the Thorns' actual child. Not sure why they cut off the priest so abruptly when he revealed this, as this has been a confusing element in the film for years, and the editor should have caught that when he/she was cutting the film, unless it was on purpose to have the big reveal in the cemetery. As for the wealth thing, the prophecy called for him to be born into a powerful family so that he can rise to be some sort of world leader, which would require a wealthy family to boost the odds of him making it big in politics.
Jerry Goldsmith's (Alien, Star Trek, Poltergeist) score was awesome. Great cinematography too. Nice reaction 👍. If you like Gregory Peck, would love your reaction to The Boys From Brazil 1978. The baboon scene at the park didn't go as planned. They couldn't get them to attack the car so they put the mother in the car. Damien: Omen 2 picks up with him as a teenager and putting his foothold on the world. The Final Conflict aka Omen 3 has the adult Damien (played by Sam Niel, way before Jurassic Park) attempting to prevent the return of Christ.
@LauraShawnLee Actually, that's wrong. The mark of the Beast is 616. It was mistranslated when stolen from Judaism. Because they didn't understand Hebrew numbers.
The hardest part about Gregory Peck playing a man who tried to kill his own son is, Peck's son committed suicide before this movie came out. In fact, the producers were hesitant about asking him to be in the movie, but surprisingly, Peck accepted the role.
Wait till you see the Exorcist. This movie and the Exorcist had people fainting, crying, and walking out of theaters. The Catholic church was not a fan of either movie. Both are classics of the same quality however, the Exorcist is a lot more graphic. I think you will like that one.
Superb reaction to a superb film . As you say it was indeed shocking when it first came out & in my opinion still is ! . Great storyline great soundtrack & excellent acting . Special shout out to Billie Whitelaw as Mrs Baylock & Patrick Troughton as the Catholic priest who attempts to warn him 😃
And continue with Omen IIIb The Final Conflict, starring Sam Neill as Damien, for the final conclusion. Avoid made-for-TV sequel / soft reboot Omen IV: a New Beginning, where a young girl takes Damien's place as the Antichrist. Or watch it, if you want to, I'm not the boss of you! ;-) It derivative of the original and pretty dull, IMHO. Also, 2006 remake, released 2006, June 6th (666, of course), is basically the same script, repurposed, with only a few changes made to original movie, like the decapition scene, which is now made according to the script, while in the original, they had changed the scene a little from how it was originally written. If you watch the remake, there are practically no surprises.
@@rikuruohomaki3230 The remake was dull as hell and the acting was pretty subpar throughout. Omen II and III are alright. Frankly it's better to just watch the trilogy and that's it.
This is a damn good movie. If you decide to watch the sequels, just be aware they aren't at the same level of the first film but still watchable, especially Damien Omen II. That's got some rather creative death sequences in it.
15:50 Actually, the number is an enumeration of the name Nero Cesear. Many thought the Roman emperor Nero, even though he committed suicide, would one day return to power and enslave most of the world. But so far, he hasn't ;)
This is what I love about spooky season - you get to see reacts to The Omen, the Exorcist, The Thing. Have you ever seen 'Jacob's Ladder' from 1990, Laura? That would float your boat, too.
I presume you aren't a fan of classic Doctor Who or you'd have recognized Patrick Troughton as the priest, he was the 2nd person ever to play the Doctor, not counting Peter Cushing.
Unfortunately I'm in my 60's now, but the good news is that I got to see this at the cinema over here in the UK when I was eighteen. And yep...it terrified the living s**t out of me! This movie had a collosal impact over here! People started studying the Book of Revelation and discussing the movie on the media, in bars, and even in schools. It still has a creepy vibe today, and the acting was amazing. Personally, it's still my favourite horror film of all time. But then again I'm a bit biased. After all, it did take place over here!!!
If you want a happy ending, watch the rest of the Omen trilogy. Omen IIib The Final Comflict, the final Omen movie has the happy ending you were looking for. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon, In the Mouth of Madness, Possesion) plays adult Damien in it.
I saw this movie when it debuted in theaters. I was taken in by the suspenseful moments. Some of the biblical references were interesting. The baboons attacked the car, because the movie's animal handlers tranquilized a baboon and placed the animal on the hood of the car. The other apes felt threatened (and then pissed) and then they began jumping all over the car. Lee Remick's reaction was genuine. She was terrified. I'd be as well!
Your doing Damien?! Very cool. Exorcist and Omen came out about the same time. I highly suggest the 3rd heavyweight movie of this era, Sybil. You're very good at psychological analysis and Sybil is a total mind F. Sybil (1976)
You want to know what it was like to see this movie when it first came out, ask me! My dad took me to see it in the theater when I was 10 years old?? After the decapitation, I ran out into the lobby. By today’s standards it’s not that scary but it sure as hell was back then, especially as a kid.
When this movie came out it was scary on an existential level that hadn't really been in cinema up till then. Since then, like many of the classcs, the anti-christ plot line is trite now.
Oh my. Someone really set you up if they allowed you to think this would be a happy ending. Oh my. I still question anyone who decides digging around graveyards after dark is a good idea.
Oh my god, you cut out the best part of the film...where the priest is running through Bishops Park to Goldmsiths satanic choir and the lightening strikes the railings.. Good reaction tho x

@@JuanRamirez-xh3kc yeah ,this guys are very creative , can't wait to see the show ! Just kidding ,I don't think I I'll enjoy the show they are preparing
I loved your reaction. I subscribed and will check out your other vids.
I recommend Damien: Omen 2 which is one of my favourite films, and he is 12 in that.
The Omen is my mums favourite film, i first saw it and the sequel when i was 8 and loved them both, still do now and i'm 41 lol.
Damien: Omen 2 picks up with him as a teenager and putting his foothold on the world. The Final Conflict aka Omen 3 has the adult Damien (played by Sam Niel, way before Jurassic Park) attempting to prevent the return of Christ.
8:15 oh I love the cars of the 1970's the Blue one is a Datsun 100A and the white one a ford Granada
Good reaction to The Omen! As good as any other I've heard.
@LauraShawnLee
Actually, that's wrong.
So great to find a Gregory Peck fan. I think he's one the best actors ever. You should watch him as Ahab in Moby Dick, and in The Big Country .
Superb reaction to a superb film . As you say it was indeed shocking when it first came out & in my opinion still is ! . Great storyline great soundtrack & excellent acting . Special shout out to Billie Whitelaw as Mrs Baylock & Patrick Troughton as the Catholic priest who attempts to warn him 😃
Definitely watch the first sequel, “Damien, Omen 2.” It’s a great follow-up.
I saw this in the theaters first run; everybody freaked out.
If your a classic Doctor Who fan or any of your fans are then you know who the actor playing that Priest is 🙂
This is a damn good movie.
There is an Omen II and III that continues and completes the story
When David Warner and Patrick Troughton can't stop what's coming, you know you're totally and utterly screwed.
This is what I love about spooky season - you get to see reacts to The Omen, the Exorcist, The Thing. Have you ever seen 'Jacob's Ladder' from 1990, Laura? That would float your boat, too.
I have not, but it’s been on my watch list for a very long time. This is probably my sign to finally get around to it lol
@@laurashawnlee what about classic 1978 Nosferatu by Werner Herzog and Klaus kinski as the best vampire ever
@@laurashawnlee I'd throw in some David Cronenberg too, "The Brood" or "The Fly" or "Videodrome".
Jacobs Ladder messed with me so bad lol.
@@FallenRingbearer me too ...!
There were a few actors or crew that got killed in the same way as the movie. The first Omen is my fave movie out of all the rest of The Omen movies.
Last time a baby was switched at a hospital, the mother asked the father to change him when it pooped the first time.
Excellent use of "waffle" as a verb. We need more of that.
This movie ranked at #16 in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo
I agree you should watch the rest of the series. 2 and 3 complete the Damien story, and part 4 is the story of his daughter.
Prince William ,this is all for you 😂😂😂
I saw this movie when it debuted in theaters.
That's because the whole film was based upon chapter 13 of the Bible's book of Revelation .
Now you need to watch Damien Omen II and to bring it all together The Final Conflict.
I saw it in early 80's when I was about 8 and it scared the s**t out of me and still does.
THE EXORCIST, PSYCHO, JAWS AND THE FIRST AND THIRD DIE HARD MOVIES.
The Omen is a trilogy!
Your doing Damien?! Very cool. Exorcist and Omen came out about the same time. I highly suggest the 3rd heavyweight movie of this era, Sybil. You're very good at psychological analysis and Sybil is a total mind F.
Sybil (1976)
thank you! I’ll add it to my watch list (:
You want to know what it was like to see this movie when it first came out, ask me! My dad took me to see it in the theater when I was 10 years old?? After the decapitation, I ran out into the lobby. By today’s standards it’s not that scary but it sure as hell was back then, especially as a kid.
Will you be watching the second film at some point? That's my favorite of the trilogy.
The idea for this movie was born during a discussion about the Book of Revelation.
After this movie, NO ONE would name their male baby Damian.
I loved your review!!!!!!! You have to watch the 2nd and 3rd ones!!!!!!! He gets what's coming to him!!!!!!!
I would buy the hell out of Gregory Peck's ivory shawl-collar sweater 6:40
"If YOU'RE not going to kill your kid, I will." Yeah ,imagine saying that to someone ! 😂
I loved this movie when it came out, but I think Omen II is a better film. Hope to see it in your lineup someday. Thanks for this review.
Don't miss the second one...........trust me!
When this movie came out it was scary on an existential level that hadn't really been in cinema up till then. Since then, like many of the classcs, the anti-christ plot line is trite now.
I recommend a movie (the omn 2) 1978, I consider it the best part , There is also a third part
Oh my. Someone really set you up if they allowed you to think this would be a happy ending. Oh my. I still question anyone who decides digging around graveyards after dark is a good idea.
Excellent, now you have the basis upon which to watch the limited series Good Omens (based on the story by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett).
How in the FRESHEST OF HELLSCAPES did you believe The Omen would have a happy ending???
Right??
People are sick. Haha. Looking at the Likes and Dislikes of this Reaction, it's Likes = 666 and Dislikes = 6. Should I add another to the Likes?
When you find out your little devil IS the little devil 😈.
Oh my god, you cut out the best part of the film...where the priest is running through Bishops Park to Goldmsiths satanic choir and the lightening strikes the railings..
Good reaction tho x
And her head blocked out Jenning's decapitated head roll. 🤣🤣🤣
