Billy and the rest of these guys didn't get near the credit they deserved here in the states. Damn, I wish Billy was around now to drown out the CRAP they're calling "Music" on the radio these days! R.I P. Billy. You were truly one of a kind!
Most of the Oz bands didn't, except AC/DC and INXS -- although there was a period during the 80s when Oz rock was hot here (Midnight Oil, Angels, and a few others getting airplay). By the 90s that all faded, except for the top bands that made it internationally. Sad, though. Australian pub rock rules.
Thank God for the Aztecs for giving us proof that we lived through the greatest era in Australia. And that music at present will never come close to it. Blessya Billy
Now THIS is proper, no-fucking- around hard R&R. When Thorpie was singing these sorts of songs, he was peerless. A great singer and performer. Whitehorse tavern, Myer Music Bowl, etc. What times (at least, those I hazily remember). Good to read that some others have survived this far.
paul cleary Agreed. A lot of my original cronies have also died over the decades for a number of different reasons. Makes me grateful that I HAVE made it this far----JUST !!
Steve & Paul - don't worry there's still a few of us still going strong ! I saw Aztecs, La De Das & Nutwood Rug Band at Sydney Town Hall 1970-71 (?) ..........incredible setting especially with Pig Morgan actually playing the monster Town Hall organ, it was somewhat surreal. Memories keep you young.
A friend of mine and I put a few gigs on in 70/71 in NSW and we were lucky enough to get the band to play at a couple. When I first met him they'd just come back from Adelaide and he said they were skint because they'd spent $4,000 on dope. That was a lot of smoke back in those days, so it may have been a bit of a porkie!
I was there at Sunbury. Such an awesome musician and a great guy too. I will miss you.......eh?......what?.......speak up, I cant hear you for that confounded whistling!!!!
Funny how he said he & the band were up themselves at the time, but they really moved it. As a straight guy playing the role he had his own TV show & more, but he was the most incredible muso, with natural stage craft. A Champ!
Few can match Thorpie's intensity, was still pumpin it right to the end - didn't matter if playing to 50,000 or 5, same 10 out of 10 performance, may he never rest in peace lol
Saw Bill and Lobby back in the early '70s at various gigs in Sydney, most notably Hornsby PBC, along with Jeff St John, Wendy Saddington and all the other brilliant acts of those days.
Berry music Oh yes man!!! I drove all the way from Adelaide to miss 3 nights sleep at the concert. Totally out of my face. I think me and my mate lived on Tequila all the time.

Fantastic, had the pleasure of meeting him what a great bloke. RIP Billy

WHAT? SPEAK UP. I can't hear you. Just joking. Great music.
What a generation to have been a part of. Aztecs at their best and Billy was one of the best. Jimi was gone by this time.
Brilliant, amazing, incredible. What a band, what a guitarist. what a singer. One of the best bands in the world I reckon.
Met my wife at a Thorpie gig in Melbourne in '71
I'm still deaf!!
And Paul Wheeler on bass, classic!!
Paul Wheeler, terrific. I sat in front of his parents at a gig at the Holdern Pavilion. They were justifiably proud. What a player.

Saw them several times in '71 and '72 at La Trobe Uni and in Canberra. What a powerhouse. Nothing like it these days regrettably.
WOW! My first super hero was Mr. Billy Thorpe
This badass crew from Aussie blew some minds back in the day. They were the real deal make no mistake.
We all went to see and hear Thorpie and weren't disappointed. He was the king of Sunbury.
one of the best rock voices in the business and a pretty dandy lead guitarist
Lobby & Billy, Sunbury 💯 OZ ROCK

I was there at Sunbury. Such an awesome musician and a great guy too. I will miss you.......eh?......what?.......speak up, I cant hear you for that confounded whistling!!!!
Billy was one of the hardest rockers on the planet.
The best of times ❤️
When Billy sings it like - what was that! I watched this as a child and I find it just a great today.. Blues/Rock is timeless.. RIP billy..
Rats Head sure knows how to bash them skins. The bastard isn't even trying. Mr.Matthews you are a legend.
Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs could blow just about all bands in the world off the stage !
Saw Billy play this in a small club,my ears rang for days.
Funny how he said he & the band were up themselves at the time, but they really moved it. As a straight guy playing the role he had his own TV show & more, but he was the most incredible muso, with natural stage craft. A Champ!
