Happy you enjoyed it! As another commenter noted, the song - which I used to believe was about a woman named Sally who took in ne'er-do-well men and tried to give them a "new start" - may actually be about the Salvation Army (Sally). In the opening verse Sade sings, "You're the only girl on Bowery and Third" - until about a decade ago, that was the address of a Salvation Army outpost that had been in operation for over 100 years (relocated to Brooklyn). And the caramel-like richness of her voice, that stunningly sexy saxophone work... whatever the song is actually about, it's long been a fave of mine. 😁
I think we _all_ thought it was about a woman (of perhaps dubious repute?) with a heart of gold, taking in all these sad sack men when they had nowhere else to turn. It was that "Bowery and Third" line that always intrigued me, though, and led me to dig deeper. This is the beauty and charm of lyrics like these: the poetry does not always have to be particularly cut-and-dried and is open to interpretation. The "Sally" bit explicitly refers to the "Sally Anne" and the work done by the Salvation Army, but implicitly, it could be about that charitable woman who takes in the strays off the streets.
This song appeared on her 1984 debut album, Diamond Life. The biggest hit song on this album was her very first Top 10 hit in America. The song was Smooth Operator.
LMAO!!! hAHAHA...LOL.....Nick that is sooooooo funny!!!! i feel the same way every time I listen to Sade!!! EVERY TIME!!! Like her voice and the way she delivers her notes and the music with her delivery of her vocals put me in a state of 1930's or 40's smokey Jazz bar or Club wear the women are wear long fancy gowns or dresses and the guy are wearing three piece suits with Fangora hats...like in Casablanca....lol.......O Love it!!!! I Love her!!!! She is one of my top all-time female artist!!!!
"Sally" would be an allusion to the Salvation Army (known colloquially as the "Sally Anne"). Absolutely agree the bass and sax are fantastic in this track. Thanks for this reaction, you two. As usual, your observations are spot on.
The only negative aspect to Sade is when the song is over. Thankfully you can play it again. Always great grooves and bass line and her vocal tone, style and phrasing is unmatched. Great request.
Great pick Mickey D love this song who am I kidding I love all her songs. Next you guy should do her song Clean Heart you are going to absolutely love it. Oh Lex you really need to learn that bass line.
When this album came out it stayed on our turntable for probably a couple of months. When we got married in '86 the track Your Love is King from Diamond Life was our bridal dance. This album has looongg attachments for me. Coming up on 37 years of marriage--I credit Sade ;0)
The exquisite rhythmic tone of this classy lady only brings us true Joy every fiber of our body in her ribnick boys and tone what a blessing from our lord Jesus thank you for playing this dear people!!!😊🥰🙏🎷🎹☮️
This is the first Sade song I ever heard. It was in a small music shop in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1984, and it was playing on their sound system. I left the store with a copy of the vinyl, then proceeded to wear it out. This still makes me cry inside…

Haha, I thought Sally was a "hooker with a heart of gold" type character.
@@frankswarbrick7562 Yeah, that's where I was for the longest time.

Notice how Sade uses lots of full open throated notes without vibrato. Not easy to do but Sounds so rich. Thanks guys 😎👍🍁

For a video watch Sweetest Taboo for the classic era Sade, but look for the live performance of Soldier of Love for a newer vibe.
