      Does the greater weight ifference increase the value of the error?
      I.E. mint weight should be 11.5, but coin is 9.37

    This is good to know. I for one have been weighing out pennies and the 1982’s are all over the place. This year is hard to wrap my head around. So much to learn about coin collecting. I’m really glad you are out there. Very informative.👍

    Dan, I enjoy your video topic variety. What is an acceptable tolerance (in grams), and does the tolerance vary depending on the standard set by the Mint for each denomination? In other words, would the acceptable tolerance increase based on the size of the planchet, or would it be a uniform tolerance regardless of planchet size?

      I placed a graphic in the video on tolerances. It is 1.94 grams.

    I have a roll of bicentennial quarters in a old plastic coin container. It looks like at one time it was part of someone's collection. My boyfriend, bought them to do our blankets at the laundrymat. He decided he would hang on to them. Forgot about them and here we are now. 2 years later They are so pretty. Super good condition.

    Great video. Coin Roll hunting recently I found a 1946 Lincoln Wheat cent. Silver in appearance. A tad bigger than a dime...not by much. Smaller then a penny. Weighing in at 2.5 grams.

    I just found a 1971 D quarter that's very different. First off, it weighs 5.2 and change, much lighter than the original. It's very fat, twice the thickness of a regular quarter, has no ridges on the outside, smooth copper color, and is slightly smaller in diameter by about 2 mm(!). It looks like it's on the wrong planchette. The obverse is stamped very strongly to where his head sticks up off the quarter quite a bit further. The rim that is raised on a quarter, well, this one is very tall, and is actually going right through the word Liberty. it's smaller diameter raised border is cutting through all the words on the circumference of the coin. It also has a very fuzzy finish to it (background). I heard the 71 Denver is a key date, and that's what this coin is, although it's way different than a regular coin. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. thank you.😏👍💯💯💯💯💯

    Hi: I have a 1966 Kennedy, no mint half dollar coin weighing in at 11.10gms and an identical that weighs 11.63 gms ( on my scale) I realize they are , or should be 40% silver, what could cause the 11.10 coin to weigh so much less? could it be aluminum? Thank you for doing this video!!! Question: If some copper planchets accidentally got stuck wrong, wouldn't it be possible that it might have happened the other way around? Especially since they were doing experiments/pattern cents in 1942/43 with different alloys? And since there were no official records of the compositions tested, who is to say?
    I'm only asking because I found a Lincoln cent that weighs what a steel penny should weigh but in bronze?

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were experimental planchets and you can check Heritage coin auctions, completed auctions to see some.

    • @deannalea1515
      @deannalea1515 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was graded by PCGS XF40BN, then due to an issue with PCGS so I had a metallurgic analysis and grading by NGC.
      You can look it up on NGC - #4719181-001
      I’ve asked everyone in the numismatic community, and nobody knows? Who started Numismatics? It’s crazy, because we make our own money and assign value to paper and metal; is it like the 1%’s evil little treasure hunt?
      When they were experimenting before the war, there were several pattern coins that were 90% Cu 10% Zn, 85%Cu 15%Zn, weighing 2.7g - 2.8g.
      Mike Byers - has blanks that weigh the same as mine? Who is the “President” or say all end all when it comes to currency? The secretary of treasury? I emailed them today😬🤪
      My coin is a 1948 D Lincoln Cent 2.7g (2.8g) 94% Cu 6%zn XF45BN

      @@deannalea1515 I know there is experimental planchet struck my 1943 dies and one sold at the last ANA auction. I am not sure what you're asking here. The mint did this a lot and they're not supposed to have made it out of the US Mint but some did, along with several other off metal coins.
      Considering the billions of cents released into circulation through out the years and decade after decade there's not way anyone could know how many or which would have ended up in circulation.

    I found a 1989 quarter with what seems to be a railroad error but is also 5.1 grams and I think my scale might be rounding up. The copper core still has the rim so it wasn’t acid. I haven’t gotten a consent answer on what it could be. Diameter is correct at least compared to another quarter.

    Ok on coins that are off on their weight, how much can be expected on loss from normal wear from circulation. I've got 1/2 dozen nickles weighing between 4.2-4.6 and not sure how much is attributed to wear, but all are in 35-55 grade and that's actually a very low assumption

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normal variations and even thick or thin planchet doesn't add value unless they grade high MS and even then the fees cost more than the coin.

    One day there will be a quarter from 1992 that will have been minted without a mint mark. It will be exactly 70 years from the 1922 no d penny, and another 30 years until it's discovered. 100 years difference that 2 business stuck coins with the same error.
    What is your thoughts based upon your knowledge if that occured?

    Hi Daniel i have a penny struck on dime size planchet i believe it fell off the roof almost all the silver has faded off as well as the date may just be the strike it took ? its hard to read has a odd wieght 2.73 grams ive stared my eyes out my best guess is 1964 63 or 83 but more convinced on 64 copper cored not zinc im guessing because of weight ,its not magnetic ,exact size and shape as a dime no ridges on edge i guess my next step is to look up for foriegn plancets ??? Would this be a 11 cent coin Dual denomination ? Im hoping wrong planchet transitional error dual denomination if there are any ??? id like to post it on a facebook group again but it didnt get much fanfare the first time .but last time i didnt notice the silver remnants color and or study it that well .ok transplant from ohio to hawaii aloha !!! Hey Daniel, I've got a 1972 that weighs 3.25.i did some research and found that it could have been stamped on a 1940s 20 centavo for bolivia. Sound right?

    • @CoinHELPu
      @CoinHELPu  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have to check but if that is the case you should be sending it to NGC. 1940's centavo is a bit older, but who knows.

    Is the one I found still “normal”? 1948 D Lincoln Cent? GUN SHELL METAL? 7 different alloys including TITANIUM? Weighs 2.7g? Has major errors all over it!? Code, letters, it’s crazy!!!
    I just found a 1943 Steel, and the reverse looks as if the wheat stalks are “UNRAVELING”???? Literally!?!?
    I’ve never seen anything like it?

Monticello looks clad also but copper around it. There is also a leaf to the right side of Monticello that looks like the dime leaf. I need to post to con help you community to see what your thought is. I ve never seen one like it.

    Hey my name is Mark, I have a question hopefully someone can answer. I’ve been going through weighing my coins. Came across a 2014d penny. Weight is 2.36gr. How can I pursue this. Even adding the .10 tolerance doesn’t add up. Or just how far away from 2.5 zinc, or 3.11 copper can you be after applying the tolerances. Thanks
