      instead of using the “ヌ” (nu) katakana, we can instead use “ン” (n) to represent the “n” sound in the English word “punk”. Therefore the romaji equivalent would simply be “panku”

    so the keyboards control the tape reels like a mellotron?

    • @baddriddimworkshop
      @baddriddimworkshop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      no not realy, the tape is recording the keyboard and what you hear is the recorded sound, wich he can play with once it's on tape a few milisecons after

    • @asbjo
      @asbjo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@baddriddimworkshop That makes no sense. If it is a combined read/write head, then the recording action will couple to the read head and they wouldn't get the effects from manipulating the tape. If the read/write action is done by the same coil, then it is directly coupled.
      If it is separate heads, you'd have too much time-lag between them.
      I'm not saying it is impossible, but, for what you are saying to be possible, you'd need to carefully and precisely interlace recording and playback, and do some interpolation in between sample points on the tape. However, that requires exact timing, and with the chaotic motions the artists are making with the tape, it seems to be a very difficult thing to pull off and keep the sound intact. Especially with that type of equipment.
      I think it is much like the mellotron. They even explain as much in the video. The tapes have more tracks, and they might have gotten hold of heads with more tracks. They seem to be keeping things relatively analogue on the tape side.
      Though, it is certainly possible to use a digital time-code track to use digital samples on a computer, much like DJ's using time-coded vinyl to play them continent mp3's. That decouples the whole physical aspect into a one way input to the computer to interpret and playback. But then the tapes are just time-coded digitally and the rest is happening digitally. I doubt that to be the case.

    • @baddriddimworkshop
      @baddriddimworkshop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@asbjo the units these guys use are all top shelf bro, these are three head machines. a quarter second is enough. and if you manipulate the tape during recording what comes in will ccome out anyhow. I know what i'm talking about, i own a tascam 38 myself and i have modded tape machines in the past. please go take a look at my channel...

    • @asbjo
      @asbjo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@baddriddimworkshop I didn’t mean any disrespect. And yea. What comes in comes out again. But your hypothesis about them interleaving recording and playback on a millisecond basis, still makes little sense. I’m gonna give an example. Assuming no crosstalk or any issues with timing or technical challenges:
      If the tape is at x speed, accelerating towards speed y and you record a sample point, and play it back a millisecond, or a few, later during this acceleration, the output would be near enough the same as the input, as the change in tapespeed between recording and playback is negligible in such small timescales.
      I’m sure they do a lot of recording on the fly. I’m also speculating that they use some of their tape manipulation to “simply” modulate/change sound in other sound sources. Like when they use keyboards to play notes. I am wondering how they achieve the modulation they do, as sometimes it seems they are using more notes than I would think is feasible to fit on the tapes.
      Btw, I also own a Revox A-77 from 1970.

    • @baddriddimworkshop
      @baddriddimworkshop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@asbjo yes ,i'm talking about manipulating the keyboards sound if it's recording and sound is coming out of play head at the same time and you speed up the reel , it will be speeded up while recording and also speeded up at playback so the actual speeded up sound you hear will be twice as fast as what he is doing to the reel, unles he stopes moving the reel before the sound hits the play head(in that case it wont be doubled), if that makes sens. i didnt take it as disrespect man, it's just that i'm used to these things. no worrys

    • @casanovafunkenstein5090
      @casanovafunkenstein5090 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The number of people who speak English well is actually very low in Japan (which in turn leads to really poor educational materials being used in schools, as there is little to no involvement from people who are fluent enough in both English and Japanese to catch the errors) and most films and other media that gets imported is dubbed, so it's not all that surprising that they wouldn't be confident enough to take the interview in English.
