Overlining on lips in general usually only works on internet cuz you can’t see the border of the lips. That’s why you probably only see people with big lips to begin with overlining their lips.

I have small lips and I overlined once and immediately when my friend came over she said “hey did you overline your lips ???” I barley overlined them over my actual lips and it looked okay in the mirror. It’s noticeable on all lips big or small ( except with a good concealer on the lips or on the corners and ridges)

The lipliner doesn’t look okay on your lips because they’re filled in and the corners aren’t flat like normal or small lips :) not because of the techniques
In her case specifically, it's also because she had a pretty rounded bottom lip, so if you mimick that shape on the top lip, it looks completely disconnected
I prefer “overlip” the Korean technique where they use a pencil brush with either lipstick or eyeshadow and blend it on the edges of your lips(I recommend powder blush)
The trick is actually to give yourself a sharp Cupid’s bow (even if there isn’t one naturally) and then underline in the corners. This will give you the definition you want without your already full lips looking overlined or messy!

This is what I do my lip border isn’t super defined so liner looks messy. I actually VERY lightly dry dab with a red matte lip stain and gloss or moisturizer over the top. It’s like gorgeous

Because of this I never wore lipstick even though I wanted to. My lips are the same. I have full lips that don’t have any definitive line at all, so lining my lips or wearing lipstick in the popular way just doesn’t look good on me. I only ever do a gradient look like this, now.

This trick will only work if you have gone over board with lip filler which has caused you to lose your natural lip line, thus making the first application style to look messy. No shade. This trick is useful for people with lip filler (who’ve had it for a while/ a lot of it). It’s useful, but just for a certain demographic.
If you want the illusion of bigger lips but have this issue; -Line the edges of your lips where your natural lip line is -Over-line the centers (of that makes sense) so the center of the top lip and bottom lip This gives you the illusion of plumper/fuller lips without having that "messy" lip look
If you overline your lips and it looks "messy" just grab a flat brush and tiny bit of concealer and tidy up the bits that look out of place and with that extra bit of highlight around the liner it makes the lips look slightly plumperr aswell

I have a girl in my year in uni, she obviously doesn't realise that 70% of internet make-up hacks and looks are not meant for outside - she shaved half her eyebrows to get thet "lifted look" even though it just looks like a missing eyebrow, ridiculous amount of glittery blush and lips so overlined it looks like she ate the lipstick

some people (like myself and my mom) also have double lip lines so over-lining can look very awkward on some people for that reason!!
Sharpening the pencil is important to make straight lines. Overline in big lips can look weird.
