I haven't yet encountered that error, but you might want to take a look at your document raster effect settings (Effect -> document raster effect settings). I tried to replicate the error with an insanely large artboard and rectangle and multiple drop shadows but didn't encounter it. Should you not be able to solve the issue using the raster effect settings I might be able to find something else if I know what the size of your file is, when you get the error, which effects are applied etc.
