My only issue with Digital Ocean in the last six years, has been regarding email. Some big email providers ( mostly the ones that are also cable or DSL providers ) have anything out of the DO IP blocks blacklisted, and trying to get DO to do anything about it, is a problem. We got around the issue by piping our outbound email through another server at Linode, who is much better about dealing with spam. We even had Linode block our outbound email and notify us when we had a customer with a compromised account, and they quickly got us back online once the clean up was complete.

I have used Linode for years and they are very solid. I have dabbled with Digital Ocean and found them good too. Lately I have used SSDnodes for some projects and found them to be an amazing value. SSDnodes easily delivers the most bang for the buck and compares favorably against Skysilk.
All of these are SSD based on KVM virtualization. KVM is fast and flexible in resource commitments. It also supports containers, particularly Docker, which Skysilk does not.

You know what would be great? A server setup tutorial. I don't mean installing the OS itself, more like details on putting up a LEMP stack, hardening, security, tar pit?, setting up and exposing services, etc. You've got bits & pieces scattered over your videos (haven't watched them all yet), but having the entire thing in one video would be a great go-to tutorial.

    • @PJBrunet

Good question. We spend years, even decades learning this stuff the hard way, answering the phone at 4am when stuff breaks, with the babies crying in the background, and on top of that it's already a VERY competitive business--in fact hosting is one of the most competitive industries I can think of. So yeah, there is a reason people don't want to share their knowledge. Do I want to compete with 100 other WP-Engines? On the other hand, I did show some of my students how to do this stuff. I think people would be shocked by how much work is involved. Like if you paid me $1000 to teach you how to setup a LEMP server from scratch, after a few hours you might become frustrated and think--OK this is too much, I can't handle it. If you're already very comfortable in a CLI and you have several years of hosting experience using shared hosts or managed hosts, and you're comfortable editing configuration files, and you're comfortable writing scripts, then I'd say you're ready to jump into Linux administration. Most people will just pay the extra cash for a "managed" server, or use the 1-click script, or trust some kind of "Ansible" thing. To DIY this stuff, you're going to be a rare kind of crazy, and there are companies willing to pay me six figures for this expertise. Why would I teach you for free? Of course I could teach people, but how much would they pay? Unless you have a specific professional goal, probably not very much. Would people have the patience to really learn everything without some kind of guaranteed job waiting? It's a very niche job at the moment, which is why it pays reasonably well. Lots of moving parts. And the parts are always changing from year to year. Like a few years ago, you might have wanted CentOS. Then maybe you didn't. Anyway, that's partly why finding the info is difficult. Maybe you're the expert of hosting Drupal. Are you going to create competition for yourself, or quit your nice six-figure job and become a full-time educator? Of course I have my own documentation, but it took me decades to write it, I'm not giving it away for free. Does that make sense? Could I be a TH-camr and disrupt the hosting industry? Would anyone care? Probably not. What do you think?

last year i was looking for a cheap-ish VPS as an alternative to tunneling to VMs at home, and ended up using linode's cheapest ($5) thingie with 1cpu/1gig/25gig/1tb (webpage says; they apparently up'd their offer yet again since i last checked. hrm. i probably should try claim that extra space and data volume) for a couple of projects, and it still fulfills my requirements. i couldn't tell how they'd fare in a 25/8 hardcore environment, but that package (and their infrastructure) worked nicely for my low-profile requirements so far. 249 days (just checked) since last "scheduled" reboot -- by me. because i screwed up and clicked around on the web-based control panel instead of using the console like a normal person -- to unmount a partition, increase it's size, then remount. i did a _windows_ there. -.-

You should've mentioned in your guide that SkySilk runs their VMs on LXC (which comes with many restrictions) and not KVM. So, they are not real VMs but rather containers. Everything comes at a cost, and this is mainly why they are cheaper than other vendors, and not because they are running older versions of hardware as you are proposing. I purchased yesterday a VPS because I fell for the price. It turns out I can't even run Docker. Thanks to your misleading guide.

Time domain firewall UDP portal is the best way. Sensitive ports like SSH and the like are completely firewalled. The system listens on a UDP port which changes every minute based on an algorithm from the current time (a request to time server is used so both client and server have the same time). An DH exchange is then performed between the server and client, once complete, the client sends a pre-shared password using the DH encryption. If the server matches the password, it then opens the ports on the firewall to the IP address of the client. The firewall automatically closes after 10 minutes once the UDP exchanges stop.

I'm thinking of getting some sort of cloud service, but I'm not sure what to look for. I want my own VLAN which all of my devices would connect to as a VPN, and I could move anywhere in the world (and then I'd need to redirect the VPNs on my devices to the new IP, of course). This means that all of my devices could communicate as if they're on the same LAN, regardless of how they're actually connected to the internet. And I want to be able to configure that VLAN. MAC address reservations, port forwarding, or anything else you can normally configure with a router. And that's all I want. For example, if I wanted a Minecraft server, I'd run it on my own computer - but it'd be on my VLAN, rather than the real LAN where I live, allowing me to forward ports (bypassing the fact that my real home LAN doesn't allow me to forward ports). I could move my IP around the world (just like you can with a normal VPN) by moving the VLAN to a different IP somewhere else in the world. I could do any home network experiments that I want even if my devices aren't actually connected to the same router.

re: your website generating a lot of unexpected data traffic. good thing, i guess, if it translates to traffic viable to you. your landing page's ratio of content vs "page volume" for lack of a better word though definitely is up to today's standards i dare say (as in, 'there probably is atleast _one_ line of content somewhere the designers didn't look'):

i'd encourage you to have a look at the source code of your current website and spot those few lines of *content* inbetween all the "load script here" anchors. once you do, i'm pretty sure you'll know what i'm talking about. (PS: sorry, beer. might have been a slurry reading experience...)
