"Gordy's gone man, I'll be outside. Good luck" That moment floors me every time, no matter how many times I see this movie. Shugart knows he's not coming back, but he's going down swinging. No dramatic speech like most movies would do. It seems so authentic and so heroic.

I served in the 75th Ranger Regiment in the mid 1990s, just a few years after the events of this movie, and I met some of the Rangers who served in the Battle of Mogadishu depicted here both in training at Ft. Benning and when I arrived at 1st Batt in Savannah, so I can say with full certainty that Elvis Wolcott is right, it doesn’t have to be in the dictionary, "limo" and other words in common usage are perfectly valid in Scrabble.

Agree wholeheartedly. This film, "Full Metal Jacket" and :"Saving Private Ryan" all contained scenes that insured I didn't feel like I could watch them a second time. They also reminded me how lucky I was. I ended up in Thailand maintaining multi-channel radio systems, while some of my buds from schools ended up with the grunts in Nam and came home in bags. Just the same, I agree with the sentiment that it's important that Jay and Amber shared reactions to a film that depicts real events. We are and should be proud of our vets who served, but no one should ever have the idea that there's glory in war. War is ugly, and a lot of good folks get maimed and killed. I'm glad we continue to have folks who are willing to whatever is demanded to protect us, but it truly guts me that so many families have to suffer such horrendous losses by those sacrifices.

One thing you guys didn't notice was that the 2 soldiers who dropped to protect the second black hawk were both delta snipers. The best of the best. And they were specifically warned it was a suicide mission. They were willing to give up their lives to save even one fellow soldier. They both were awarded. You for sure noticed when the other delta squad went into the town on foot. Again, soldiers willing to die for others.

this got on the news back in the US, and the wives of shugart and gordon immedeately knew, even from the poor camera shots of the dead bodies, and before the army had time to tell them, that this was their husbands, as the pair wore distinct underwear that their wives had sent them.

In reality the pilot Michael Durant wasn't the only survivor of the crash.
Afaik at least one other person was also still alive, Durant was just the only one who didnt get killed by the mob later. One of the many changes they made for the movie.
Another change was that the US-military actually did fly on a daily bases with groups of helicopters over the city, so that the Somalis get use to it and dropped their vigilance.
Aidid's men only realized at the last moment, that they would get attacked.

I was not there, but I have several friends who were there both in the sky and on the ground. I think the film makers do a great job of capturing the essence of the tension and how soldiers respond to it. The ugliest thing about war is the fact that it always takes place in somebody's neighborhood, not in a separate arena. I am a combat veteran and I've seen too many innocent people traumatized by wars in their own neighborhood. After 20 years in the infantry, I continue to be in awe of our amazing soldiers. Even if they all think, "how could we behave otherwise?". General Hal Moore (ft. in WE WERE SOLDIERS) once said, "Hate war, love the American soldier". I despise that so many people suffer for political decisions beyond their ability to influence, but I am so proud of all my brothers & sisters in arms (past, present, and future) who do their best in the worst possible situations to reduce that suffering.

I was in Mogadishu shortly before this happened. I was a communications tech in the USAF, so I didn't leave the compound often.
This film did a great job of depicting what life was like for them. The biggest impact on me was the literal smell of death as I got off of the plane. It was overwhelming. The best part was the night sky. Cloudless and very little light pollution. The stars were breathtaking
Fortunately, I was reassigned to Mombasa, Kenya to provide support for the efforts in Somalia. I had a wonderful time learning key Swahili phrases like "Jambo", "Asante sana", and "Hakuna matata". Then The Lion King comes out and every five year old knows the same Swahili I do. 😋

@@IAmNotARobotPinkySwearI've seen the movie a few times but still haven't read the book yet, so I might confuse or mix some things up, or just whole-ass say stuff I thought is true that in reality someone just made up:
IIRC the reason for the big differences between the book and movie was that the book was written to have an anti-facist subcontext and message. Unfortunately since acting like your an educated expert and connoisseur while in reality being braindead and creatively bankrupt is a requirement to be in 90% of Hollywood, the screenwriters and directors that *Read* said book like most of Hollywood unfortunately have the innate inability to comprehend such things as "subtlety", or any other way to convey something that's not just throwing it into your face while screeching as loud as possible.
So when they read this anti-facist book, they naturally somehow concluded it was disgustingly *Pro-Facist*... and so disliking "fascism" they decided they'd change the script/ movie to dunk on the book and make it... Anti-Facist... (?)
Yeah, they basically made what they considered an "Anti-facist message" movie, to dunk on what they considered a "Pro-facist" book, that in reality actually had an "Anti-facist message" that they were just to dense to see. So it's like an over the top double negative movie of the book or something like that.

This was such a hard film to watch. All those young people serving are somebody's babies, somebody's siblings, somebody's parents and they are out there fighting for all of us. We owe our veterans and our active duty members so much more than they are currently receiving. From the bottom of my heart, as a navy brat, I thank you all for all your sacrifices. Not just the combat, but the time away from your families, for the constant moving, the hardships of all those long distance relationships. As a point of note, Saving Private Ryan WAS based off true events but only by story and premise All characters were fictional
The situation of grabbing Ryan in the middle of war because of his brothers getting KIA is attributed to the same thing that happened to the Sullivan family
There were five brothers from that family that served on a Navy ship, the USS Juneau and it was sunk when it was torpedoed in the
    Pacific during battle
The military made it so that not more than one member of a family is to serve in the same unit or station while active and if only one surviving sibling of a family serving is left, that person is to be immediately discharged, to keep that family name alive

    • @chrisbolliger5717
      @chrisbolliger5717 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

That is not correct. Saving Private Ryan is pure fiction. While the Sullivan brothers were all killed on the Juneau at the same time, there was never a mission to return a surviving brother.

    • @KarlKraus1
      @KarlKraus1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@chrisbolliger5717 I NEVER said ANYTHING about a surviving sibling of a family in the military being recalled in real life
What I DID say was that the movie built off of that incident and saw how it could affect the goings-on of war and how it might happen
Plus, one of the brothers got killed a week before the others were so the situation wasn't written exactly like how the Sullivan brothers were killed
I KNOW this is fiction I SAID THAT TOO
I said the premise was the inspiration for the movie and all characters were created for the movie as well
The Juneau was sunk in 1942 and this story takes place after D-Day in '44 so this is after the military passed the policy to make sure no one in a family serves in the same unit
However, that was all well and good for the Navy for the most part but not the Army
Siblings who are soldiers in battle can still get killed so this is a way to describe how that may unfold
I know what I'm talking about

The USS Juneau sinking [ Sullivan brothers deaths ] led to changes in military policy to prevent sibings serving on the same ship or in the same unit.
The 'Band of Brothers' book [by Stephen E. Ambrose and first published in 1992] was the inspiration for the story told in the movie "Saving Private Ryan". There are a few paragraphs in the book that talked about Frederick 'Fritz' Niland and his brothers. Fritz was close friends with Warren Muck and Donald Malarkey of easy company. Steven Spielberg's 1998 film Saving Private Ryan is loosely based on the Niland brothers' story. For more information see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niland_brothers

I was in my mid-20s when this happened. This was a tragic event in history. The US Secretary of Defense did not consider Somalia a "war zone," so tanks, APCs, and (offensive) combat aviation were not approved. Just one AC-130 gunship or an A-10 could have changed the tragic history and things would have turned out differently. It was embarrassing to have smaller, poorer, countries bail the US out. The other countries considered Somalia dangerous and brought military equipment.

just some info. When I was in Basic in the Army, by head Drill Instructor was Special Forces. he was part of the group that was involved in the Black Hawk Down incident. He specifically was the radio man back at base that used the radio to coordinate between the teams on the ground and the officers back at base. he told us one day during down time (evening time before going to bed for the night) that he was present for the whole pre-mission, mission, and aftermath. he told us that it wasn't hundreds of the enemy killed, it was THOUSANDS of enemy bodies once they got backup on site. they were piled up like cordwood in a ring around the two soldiers and they had used every bullet in their guns and any enemy guns that they took off the ones they killed. then they switched to knives and started killing the enemy that way. that they weren't going down because they were protecting the last guy because he had two broken legs (along with other broken bones and injuries). That the enemy had to stop trying to capture them and had to use snipers to kill them from a distance after thousands of their troops lay dead. that was the only way they could kill the SF soldiers. Then the enemy dragged their dead bodies through the streets and hung them off a bridge as a sign of their victory. they captured the last guy once he ran out of bullets as well, and held him hostage until he was rescued by another SF team. Also, that this fight went on for many HOURS, so it wasn't a quick battle. He told us this all while his voice cracked and his eyes watered (but didn't cry) because he had to listen to the radio the whole time this was going on because they kept the radio open incase the base needed to know any new intel. he said that they shouted out every time they were shot or stabbed so that they each knew the other was still fighting, so the officers and he knew how many wounds they each suffered. he told us that he still feels guilty to this day because he drew the short straw and had to stay behind (none of them wanted to stay behind) as the radio man while his entire team was wiped out. I can't watch that movie without remembering this and breaking down over what those men suffered. and I'm tearing up right now, just writing this.

As a member of TF Ranger and someone who roped in that day, I need to say that I enjoyed you reaction video. I had already watched this a month or two ago, but I knew that I needed to comment; so here I am watching it again. Before I rewatch it, there are a couple things that I need to let you know regarding it.
I appreciate that you made this as a Veterans Day tribute. Approximately a month prior to your video, members of TF Ranger gathered in Knoxville, TN for the 30th Anniversary of the event. Between dinners and (many) drinks, we conducted a Mogadishu Mile memorial run (which is actually done yearly by the Ranger Regiment), held a full memorial service for all Ranger that we lost in that era, and conducted a private book signing amongst ourselves, where the books were going to be auctioned off in order to raise money for the Three Rangers Foundation, a non-profit started by John Collett (a TF Ranger veteran and with me on the ground there), that works to help Rangers and veterans transition after life in the military.
My final thought prior to rewatching the video and making additional comments is an agreement to a comment by Jeff Struecker in his video 'Return to Mogadishu'. He stated shortly into his video that the action you see in this movie is only a fraction of what we actually experienced; and I fully agree with him. When asked to talk about the movie and my time there, I always ensure that my audience has watched at least a portion of this video and the documentaries prior to asking me questions. The movie is just that, a movie.....to tell a story. Other perspectives are always going to come into play. That being said, it was a good, relatable story of the events that most people could understand.
As I watch this again, there will be more comments.

I was in the Coast Guard for 20 years. I served with a man who was prior Army. One night after a few drinks he told me he fought in Somalia, and he got very emotional. He told me that's why he joined the Coast Guard. He said: I got tired of killing people. Now I want to save them. I never forgot that conversation.

The quiet as they flew in is something that a lot of soldiers experience . You get so scared for what's to come that the brain starts to block out some outside stimulus in an attempt keep panic at bay. Your heartbeat seems louder than the other sound around you. You may even get tunnel vision. But when the action starts your training kicks in along with a huge rush of adrenalin . Its not until later when there is a lull and you have time to think that the fear creeps back in.Then all you can do fight it back and fight to survive.

The director, Ridley Scott, made some extraordinary movies in his career across different genres: sci-fi, historical fiction and war
He made Alien in the 70s, which made him a household name in the industry and then in 2000, the year before BHD came out, he made Gladiator, the movie that reinvigorated the stories that are set in ancient civilizations, like Rome
When the holidays are over and 2024 is underway, I want you to see Gladiator as soon as you can It'll make you cry and feel in awe by what you see It'll crack your top 10 list easily

I spent 2 and a half months in Somalia when I was in the Navy Seabees. The place I was at mostly was Bardera. The temperature got up to 130° in the day and down to 40° at night. Was in country from Dec 26, 1992 to Mar 08, 1993. You have probably never heard of the Seabees. They are one of 3 special force units in the Navy. The other 2 are The Navy Seals and the Underwater Construction Team. The Seabees do land based construction. We were repairing the runways for the planes to bring in supplies

Now you NEED to watch the 2005 movie LORD OF WAR, starring Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto, and Ethan Hawk. It's "based" on a true story of an American arms dealer. And you will learn where these armies get their guns.

I've watched many war movies and Black Hawk Down is one of my favorites for its realism in every way. I remember the nightly news on tv talking about the incident briefly. There was no way you knew the gravity of what actually happened. Typical.

What a movie to be doing today. This one's personal with our family. My father Uncle grandfather's in the military. World war II Vietnam etcetera. My uncle is a retired brigadier general helicopter pilot from Vietnam to Mogadishu. He was there he was a colonel at the time. And they actually say his name in the movie. If you listen attentively he was one of the operators that coordinated just outside the perimeter. His name is Colonel Harral. He was not in one of the Blackhawks that went down but was responsible for their entry and their retraction. He is still alive and kicking on this day. Thank you for sharing. salute to all veterans here and not here. He's coined the phrase "Irene". Which is my mother's middle name.

Since both of you are educators and enjoy music , one movie you’ll enjoy is ‘Mr. Holland's Opus” from 1995. Initially taking place in the 1960s It’s about a guy who dreams of becoming a composer but decides to take on a music teaching job and it goes on to show how that affects his life. I won’t say any more but it’s definitely worth a watch.
